Chapter – 75

“A Single Envelope”

“Fos, welcome,” Ruri said, calling him over and having him sit next to her.

“Can you greet our guest?”

“Hello,”

Fos bowed his head.

“You’re a good boy. There’s a boy about your age at my house too,”

Ruri’s guest said.

“I have a friend named Yukito,” Fos said with a smile.

“Is that so? You’ve made a friend. My son is named Takayuki. Would you like to be friends with him?”

“Yeah,”

Seeing Fos nod, Ruri spoke.

“I need to talk with this gentleman, so could you go play quietly over there for a while?”

“I understand.”

Fos nodded and then got off the sofa, heading toward the Japanese-style room. Watching him play with blocks,

Yonekura handed Ruri a single envelope.

Ruri looked at it, puzzled.

“Actually, my father was entrusted with a letter by your grandfather, and today I have come to deliver it. Normally, it should have been given immediately, but since Miss Ellis had passed away, my father thought it might be better not to hand it over,”

Yonekura explained.

Ruri took the envelope in her hands and studied it closely.

“I haven’t looked inside, so I don’t know the contents, but apparently it’s a letter from Shizuko, my great-aunt and the sister of my grandparents, addressed to your father,”

Yonekura continued.

Ruri raised her head from the envelope at that.

“You know the story of your father being adopted, right?”

“Yes,”

“My great-aunt was a widow; her husband died in the war. She and Miss Ellis were close friends. After the war, Miss Ellis was raising a small child, and though I don’t know the details, they became acquainted. Through that connection, my grandparents, the Goyos, also became close with them, their families interacting as one,”

Yonekura said, pausing to glance at Fos, who was completely absorbed in his play, before continuing.

“At first, my father learned about you and hesitated to hand over the letter. But once he realized you hadn’t known about Miss Ellis either, he decided it was better not to give it to you. That letter was never sent to Miss Ellis either, so perhaps my great-aunt also decided to keep it.

However, upon learning from the Goyos that you had taken in Miss Ellis’s distant relative as a child, my father must have thought of my great-aunt and asked me to give it to you,”

he explained.

“I see,”

“This letter may contain painful memories for you. Or it might just be a letter between friends. Still, knowing your past, even a little, would surely make my great-aunt happy,”

Yonekura said.

“Thank you very much,” Ruri bowed her head.

“Well, I’ll take my leave here,”

Yonekura stood.

“Fos, come visit my house next time,” he called as he left Ruri’s home.

After Yonekura left, Ruri stared at the envelope for a while.

It seemed to have been kept carefully, with hardly any yellowing.

Ruri looked at Fos once; he was happily stacking blocks with the fairies, making her smile faintly.

She went to the kitchen, used scissors to open the seal, and took the contents out.
