To Twist Your Destiny _Episode 05

Late that morning, Evelyn came to a decision.

I have to go see Dylan.

Ever since the Whitewood family’s banquet, Beneath the Rosaceae had already begun.

If she wanted to save him, she needed to meet him first.

But there was a problem.

Knock, knock.

A knock sounded, and the door to Evelyn’s room opened. A maid entered, pushing a tray of food and setting it down.

“Miss, I’ll leave your meal here.”

“Alright.”

The maid hesitated before leaving, glancing back at Evelyn.

Then she spoke carefully.

“Um… Miss, when the master returns later, why don’t you go and apologize sincerely? Everyone cares about you—they’ll surely forgive you. You can’t stay locked in here forever, can you?”

…Yes.

That was the problem.

For several days since the Whitewood banquet,

Evelyn had been confined to her room.

* * *

The past few days hadn’t been difficult for Dylan alone.

In that short yet long stretch of time, Evelyn came to deeply understand what she had done—and what she would have to bear because of it.

Setting aside the fact that she had disobeyed her father, the single sentence she had spoken had caused enormous repercussions for the Primrose family.

Because of that, her father, Isaac, had exploded in anger.

“Go right now and tell them you’re canceling the proposal, Evelyn! Do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve caused our family?!”

“D-dear, calm down. She’s not well—”

“Stay out of this! I raised her carefully despite her condition, and this is how she repays me—by disgracing the family! Clarence, you couldn’t even keep your own sister in line?!”

Caught in the crossfire, Clarence protested indignantly.

“I did exactly as you instructed! How was I supposed to know she’d suddenly go to that man Dylan and do something like this? If I hadn’t intervened, things would’ve gotten even worse!”

Right after Evelyn proposed to Dylan, Clarence had panicked and immediately brought her back home.

It had been the best possible decision.

If she had stayed any longer, it would have only fed the gossip of onlookers.

All Evelyn had done… was propose.

Yet that single act shattered their once harmonious home in an instant.

Even the image of a family that claimed to love her.

“There’s no point in arguing further. It’s not too late yet. Do as Dylan Fitzroy requested before things get worse. And we must proceed with the marriage arrangement with Grenville—”

“No. I will not marry Arthur Grenville.”

At last, Evelyn—who had remained silent until now—spoke.

She had no choice.

Dylan’s obsession with Daphne goes beyond imagination.

Given even the slightest excuse, he would find a way to approach her—

Even if she were already married.

So Evelyn could never accept his demand.

At least not until there was a definite connection between herself and Dylan.

Her firm stance caused Isaac’s anger—barely suppressed—to surge again.

“What? You still haven’t come to your senses?!”

“D-dear! Evelyn, why are you doing this? You must listen to your father! You were always such an obedient child—why are you like this now…?”

Her mother, Michelle, anxiously tried to persuade her.

“Your father isn’t asking you to do anything bad. You’re old enough to understand the trouble you’ve caused. This is all for your sake.”

For your sake.

At those words, Evelyn felt her breath catch again.

This moment—

Her father’s anger, her mother’s desperate persuasion, her brother’s resentful gaze—

It felt as though she was betraying the very family she loved, who once loved her.

It felt like she alone was wrong.

Like her misguided actions had brought harm to everyone.

And even now, the same question kept surfacing in her mind:

What am I doing? Is it right to betray my family just to save someone I saw in a dream?

As Isaac said, it wasn’t too late.

If she simply lowered her head and apologized—

If she obeyed—

They would all love her again.

This might even become a story they laugh about at family dinners someday.

If she just returned to being the obedient, kind daughter she once was.

But Evelyn knew she couldn’t.

Maybe… before I saw all this, I could have.

Before witnessing how everything she believed in could collapse so easily over a single proposal.

What her family truly wanted wasn’t Evelyn.

They wanted someone who could live and contribute to the family.

If possible—

Anyone could replace her.

Anyone…

“…Mother, is marrying Arthur Grenville really for my sake?”

“Of course it is, dear.”

As soon as Evelyn spoke, Michelle nodded eagerly.

“But I don’t want to marry him. Even so… if I were to die soon, would I still have to marry him?”

“Oh my, what a dreadful thing to say! Why would you die? Don’t say such things—it breaks your mother’s heart. You’ll live a long, healthy life. That’s why you must marry, as your father says.”

Michelle’s answer was exactly the same as Clarence’s.

So Evelyn gave the same reply.

“Then I want to inherit the family. If I’m going to live long, like you said, then I have the right, don’t I?”

For a moment, time seemed to stop.

An unnatural silence filled the room.

Then Isaac spoke—

“Clarence, we’re meeting investors tonight. Prepare yourself.”

“…Were you able to contact anyone?”

“I’ve already reached out to the western landowners. We should be able to get support from them.”

They acted as if the argument with Evelyn had never happened.

This was how they always reacted when she showed stubbornness they disliked—

They treated her like she didn’t exist.

Every time, it made Evelyn break out in a cold sweat.

Struggling to breathe, she spoke again.

“Father, I want to inherit the family.”

“Madam, contact your side of the family as well. Your sister Camilla recently made a large profit from investments.”

“But Camilla is greedy and only thinks of herself—I don’t know if she’ll help.”

“If I truly can live long, then I have the right too. If you allow it, I’ll cancel the proposal as you wish.”

“Still, we should at least ask.”

“Please… listen to me. Father, Mother…”

Her voice began to falter.

Their voices, excluding her completely, felt distant.

She knew exactly how this would end.

She would gasp for air like she was being strangled—

And eventually admit she was wrong.

I can’t do that.

If this were only her problem, she might have given in.

But it wasn’t anymore.

Dylan’s life was tied to it now.

Still, no words came out.

No matter what she said, they wouldn’t look at her.

Feeling her blood run cold, Evelyn acted on impulse.

Her hand stretched out—

Pale and trembling.

She grabbed the vase beside her—

And threw it to the floor.

Crash!

The loud noise echoed—

And only then did her family turn to look at her.

Only then.

Her trembling lips parted.

She didn’t know where the courage came from.

Her body shook uncontrollably—

But her voice came out steady.

“I will never… cancel the proposal.”

Synopsis

A man who rose in status by loving a noblewoman.
Yet in the end, he falls into ruin because of that love.
I was the closest friend of the woman he loved.

When he appeared as if following the predetermined path to propose to my friend,
all I had left was one year to live.

So I decided—willingly—to exchange his ruin for the time I had left.

“Marry me, Dylan Fitzroy.”

A reckless decision, made in a fleeting moment,
carried out in a beautifully romantic way.

“Why are you going this far? If there’s something you want, just say it instead.”

Dylan was certain the table between them had tilted toward him.
After all, he had wealth—and with wealth, negotiations are always in one’s favor.

“I can give you anything you want, as much as you desire.”

“But I don’t want anything from you except marriage.”

There was, however, one thing Dylan did not yet understand.
The most dangerous opponent for someone who has everything… is someone who has nothing left to lose.

“Oh, there is one more thing. I want you to live happily ever after.”

“You’re insane. What is your real reason?”

Evelyn paused.
She had known since the moment she first anticipated being asked this question that she would prepare the most plausible answer.

But now that it was on her lips, she hesitated slightly.

Because that answer was—

“Because I love you.”

Even to herself, it was a pitiful lie.
