Chapter 10

. A Man Who’s Only Cold on the Outside

Siwan peeked through the blinds to check the office just in case.

Not long ago, he had publicly declared, “If you’re done with your work, you can leave on time.” Maybe because of that, the office was now empty.

“Looks like everyone’s already gone home.”

He checked the time—and holy crap.

It was well past 9 p.m.

It’d be weirder if anyone was still around.

A while back, a friend of CEO Do Myung-jin had dropped by DK Food headquarters. After seeing how late the employees were still working, the guest had said:

“They all look like college entrance exam retakers.”

It was meant as a compliment—the focus and work ethic here were intense.

At other companies, you’d find people sneaking out for smoke breaks, grabbing coffee, reading webtoons in the bathroom, or straight up online shopping. But strangely, you didn’t see that kind of thing at DK Food.

The reason? CEO Do Myung-jin’s firm belief: “Leaving work on time is a benefit.”
At exactly 6 p.m., you could go home—as long as you’d finished your tasks.

A high-paying job with no pressure to stay late? Basically a dream job. So the employees worked like crazy to finish everything before 6.

The trade-off? Not even a minute of tardiness was forgiven—it would be reflected in performance reviews.

“I should head out too.”

Siwan was just putting on his coat when his phone started vibrating—long vibration.

Short vibration meant a message. Long meant a call.

He had a bad feeling who it was.

“…Tsk.”

[Chae Su-hwa]

Just as he expected.

The least welcome caller at the end of a workday.

When Su-hwa called, there was always one reason: to vent. The only question was whether she wanted to do it over the phone or meet in person for it.

Siwan’s tone and expression were often curt, but that was just surface level. He was actually quite soft-hearted.

Even when he was dead tired, if Su-hwa cried, “Oppaaaaang! I’m so mad!” he’d go see her. He’d think, She must really need someone if she’s calling me.

The only way to avoid it? Don’t answer.

He closed his eyes and waited for the call to end.

Thankfully, Su-hwa gave up quickly this time. Unlike usual, she stopped after just three calls.

“Well, must not have been that urgent.”

Siwan had once ignored her calls twenty times in a row.

It was a showdown—he held out to see who would crack first. But if she kept calling, it made it impossible for him to take or make any other calls. Eventually, he gave in.

“Haha.”

But today… he finally won. That alone made him feel great.

He was just fastening the top button of his shirt when he noticed someone moving in the office. Pressing his forehead against the glass, he saw Hana packing up her things.

“So Assistant Manager Joo isn’t gone yet.”

He suddenly realized—now was the perfect time to return the lunchbox.

No one else was around, so he could personally thank her.

He quickly pulled out a paper bag from his drawer.

“Ah!”

He’d slammed the drawer shut too fast and caught his finger—but this wasn’t the time to be nursing pain.

Shaking his throbbing finger, he flung open the small fridge in his office. Inside were a 500ml chocolate milk and individually wrapped jelly packs.

A simple but sincere thank-you gift for the kimchi fried rice—not too much, not too little.

He hadn’t given it to her in time, so the fridge had several expired chocolate milks stacked in the back.

Every morning, Siwan stopped by the convenience store to buy a fresh one. If he was going to give it, it had to be fresh. How embarrassing would it be if she said, “This looks kinda old…”

He had just stepped outside when he spotted Hana exiting the office.

“H-Hey!”

He tried to call her—but too late.

He sprinted toward her, but right as he closed in, the elevator doors slid shut.

“Aaagh!”

He frantically mashed the elevator buttons, but it was no use.

[Ding.]

Luckily, the other elevator arrived right away.

“Why is returning a lunchbox so hard?”

He stepped in, pressed the button for the first floor, and immediately hit “close.”

He couldn’t risk someone else getting on and making him miss her again.

While descending, he glanced at the mirror to fix his hair.

He was anxious, sure—but there was nothing he could do to make the elevator go faster. Might as well use the time to tidy up his appearance.

“Ugh. My hair’s curling again from the sweat.”

He ran his fingers through the frizzy strands and took a deep breath.

Meanwhile…

As soon as Hana stepped out of the elevator, she raised her phone and snapped in frustration.

“Ugh! Dad, why are you even here?!”

[What, I’m not allowed? I just thought I’d swing by your office. I didn’t even go inside, okay?]

“Your intentions are suspicious!”

Her dad, Joo Pyeong-hwa, was standing outside DK Food HQ.

“Thought I’d pick up my daughter since I was nearby.”

The moment she heard that, Hana understood his real motive:

‘I’m gonna see the punk who’s been eating my daughter’s lunch.’

She had a lot to deal with today, so she’d left work later than usual—but clearly her dad thought it was because of “lunchbox boy.”

Even when she told him not to come, saying she had to work late, Pyeong-hwa didn’t listen.

[You’re coming out now, right? You’re alone, yeah?]

“Ugh! Of course I’m alone. Who else would I be with? I actually worked late today!”

Pyeong-hwa hesitated, then asked cautiously:

[You haven’t packed any lunch since then…]

Technically, she had—just one.
That day, she’d packed two.

“Yeah. So let’s stop talking about lunch. I’m not doing that anymore.”

[Did you get rejected or something?]

Hana shoved her phone into the hood of her sweatshirt and pulled out her hair tie. She closed her eyes and cracked her neck side to side with a loud crack-crack.

After a few deep breaths, she gathered her hair and tied it back up. Then she took the phone out again and held it to her ear.

“I said I didn’t, so believe me already! If you keep this up, I’m seriously moving out.”

[What?! No, no! Hana, I’m sorry. I just worry with how the world is these days.]

Outside the revolving glass door, she saw her dad bowing into his phone, looking sheepish.

The sight made her laugh a little.

“If he’s that scared of me moving out, how’s he gonna handle me getting married someday?”

Pyeong-hwa also spotted her and lit up, waving brightly.

Hana was about to step through the revolving door toward him when someone tapped her on the shoulder.

Who on earth would tap her shoulder here?

Thinking it was Team Leader Oh Ah-young, she turned around—
But it was someone entirely unexpected.

“Wahh!”

The sight of Siwan standing there stone-faced startled her so much she let out a yelp.

Siwan was just as flustered.

Sure, anyone might be startled by a tap on the shoulder—but she was fine with the touch and then screamed when she saw his face? That stung a little.

Still, he was the one who startled her, so he apologized politely.

“Sorry for scaring you.”

“N-No, I’m sorry for screaming.”

The two of them bowed awkwardly at each other in a mutual apology.

Before things could get more uncomfortable, Siwan held up the lunch bag.

“I called out to return this. You didn’t hear, so I tapped your shoulder. Sorry for the unnecessary contact.”

“Oh, I was on a call. Guess I didn’t hear. Haha.”

As Hana reached for the bag, she suddenly gasped and turned around. If her dad saw this—it would be very troublesome.

Luckily, Pyeong-hwa was nowhere in sight.

“What’s wrong?”

Siwan asked, puzzled.

Hana just smiled and shook her head.

“It’s nothing. Did you enjoy it?”

Siwan’s expression turned dead serious.

“It was absolutely delicious. No, saying it was ‘delicious’ doesn’t even begin to cover it. It was the best meal I’ve had in a long time.”

Compliments make whales dance—but too much praise can stop a dancing monkey in its tracks.

Coming from a department head—and the CEO’s son no less—it was a bit overwhelming.

It felt like a rich guy being touched by a “humble peasant’s dish.”

“Ah… it was just kimchi fried rice. Anyway, I’m glad you liked it.”

Hana tried to wrap up the conversation, but Siwan suddenly leaned in, his eyes burning with intensity.

“No. It wasn’t just kimchi fried rice. You know the ‘Mom’s Kimchi Fried Rice’ we launched? I ate so much of that while developing it. I traveled all over the country. And I swear—nothing compares to yours.”

“Um… you’re a little close.”

“Ah, sorry. I got a little carried away again.”
