Chapter 7

. That Annoying Guy

Jang Shinyeong crossed her arms and furrowed her brow.

“But I can’t believe our Hana packed a lunch for someone else. It must be a guy, right?”

“My detective’s intuition tells me—it’s 100% a guy. Oh, and it was in a big thermal lunchbox.”

Hearing Joo Pyeonghwa’s confident tone, Shinyeong bit down on her lower lip.

Hana was fairly popular and had dated a few times before—three or four, to be exact.

But as far as Jang Shinyeong knew, Hana had never once packed a lunch for any of her boyfriends.

Leaning forward with a serious expression, Shinyeong spoke.

“What if she suddenly says she’s getting married?”

“Should I go get a suit tailored just in case? The one I have for weddings and funerals doesn’t even button anymore.”

Detectives rarely have to wear suits. Restaurant owners are the same.

So he got by with just one black suit for all occasions. Though his belly had grown to the point the jacket wouldn’t button anymore, he didn’t care—it’s not like he wore it for long.

But if Hana were to say she was getting married, he’d have to wear it to both the family meeting and the wedding ceremony!

Shinyeong gave her husband a look of disbelief.

“Dear, is that really what you should be saying right now?”

“Oh—sorry.”

After giving him a final glare, Shinyeong jumped to her feet.

“I’m going to get some skincare done. Gotta prep in advance. You can buy clothes later, but skincare takes time. Even starting now might not be enough.”

“You’re right. For an athlete, you’re pretty smart.”

“Excuse me? There are plenty of smart athletes, thank you very much.”

Joo Pyeonghwa stroked his thick chin in thought before widening his eyes as if he’d made up his mind.

“I’m going to drop by Hana’s company today. I need to find out who that punk is.”

“He might not even work at her company.”

“No, he definitely does. Hana’s not the type to pack dinner for someone who’s not from work.”

Cooking is always best when it’s freshly made. Sure, lunch packed in the morning would lose some flavor, but it was acceptable.

But making food at dawn and leaving it until dinner?
And not even for herself—but for her boyfriend?

There was no way Hana would do that.

Nodding in agreement, Shinyeong praised him with a serious face.

“As expected, you’re sharp. Must be your detective instincts.”

“Ah, but today won’t work. We’ve got group reservations for lunch and dinner.”

“Are you seriously saying that matters more than finding out what kind of guy our daughter’s seeing?!”

Shinyeong sighed deeply.

“Look, I get it. If she’s anything like me, her taste in men is terrible. But we’re running a restaurant—we don’t have a choice. Go another day.”

Pyeonghwa tilted his head and looked at his wife.

“What do you mean you’ve got bad taste in men? You married me, didn’t you?”

“Hm? Well… Let’s just say that’s true.”

“No, hold on! What do you mean ‘let’s say’?!”

“Didn’t you hear? We’ve got a group coming in for lunch. I’ve got to get ready.”

Waving him off like he was a nuisance, Shinyeong rushed into the kitchen.

Food Development HQ—Manager and Team Leader Meeting.

Each team leader took turns reporting on their team’s projects and current progress.

Siwan asked questions based on everything he’d studied and researched up to now.

His polite yet sharp questions silenced even those who had dismissed him as a mere “parachute hire.” They quickly lowered their tails and switched into loyal subordinate mode.

After all, the last person to approve everything before the CEO was the division head.
And when you’re a corporate worker, you survive by bowing when needed and adapting when necessary.

That’s the reality of a salaried employee—a noble house’s servant, really.
So if you’ve got to bow anyway, better to do it for someone competent, especially if he’s the CEO’s son.

Luckily, Siwan managed to earn the team leaders’ favor.
But the department managers still weren’t fond of him.

To his left sat a handsome, middle-aged man with neatly combed hair and a gentle smile.

This was Cha Minhwan, the head of the Business Division. But the smile was just for show—every time Siwan spoke during the meeting, Cha’s insides churned.

‘Acting all high and mighty, huh? Just a snot-nosed brat parachuted in by his daddy.’

Cha Minhwan’s nickname was Slithering Snake. True to the name, he never showed his real thoughts on his face.

Always smiling, always polite—sometimes even jovial—he was quite popular in the division.

Throughout the meeting, he simply wore a pleasant smile, nodding every time Siwan spoke as if to say, “I’m listening very carefully to you.”

Across from him sat a sharp-eyed middle-aged man with a triangle-shaped face—Kim Deokbae, head of the Development Division, known as the “Viper.”

He’d joined the company the same year as Cha Minhwan. He was blunt, abrasive, and never held back his harsh critiques.

And the worst part? His harsh words were always spot-on. People often had their mental stability shattered after a scolding.

Clearly displeased with the situation, his narrow eyes seemed even narrower than usual.

The Food Development HQ had two department heads and one acting department head.

There was the Slithering Snake, Cha Minhwan; the Viper, Kim Deokbae; and then Oh Ahyoung, the so-called fighting chicken team leader of Food Planning (acting manager).

Since the Food Planning Team reported directly to the division head, they weren’t under a “department,” so Oh Ahyoung received department head-level treatment despite being a team leader.

Here’s how that happened: The previous division head had emigrated for various reasons, leaving the position vacant.

Internally, it was assumed the next division head would be either Cha or Kim—no outsiders.

The two of them believed this was only natural.

But then, out of nowhere, they were told that the third son of CEO Do Myeongjin would be stepping in as the new division head.

It was a punch to the gut.

If only he’d been an incompetent brat with nothing going for him besides his father’s name—that would’ve been fine.
CEO Do, who valued ability above all, would’ve kicked him out in no time.

But after 20+ years of corporate life, the two managers could tell—this new guy, Siwan, wasn’t ordinary.

In fact, if he really had been useless, CEO Do never would’ve let him take the role to begin with.

‘Tch. So he wasn’t in his siblings’ shadows—he was just low-profile.’
Cha Minhwan clicked his tongue internally.

Watching Siwan sit at the head of the meeting table with perfect posture made his stomach churn.

Being a division head was a stepping stone to the executive level. You couldn’t reach that level without going through this role.

While the two managers stewed with frustration and calculations, Oh Ahyoung felt the opposite—she was actually relieved Siwan became the division head.

She didn’t want to work under either the snake or the viper.

Only time would tell, but from today’s meeting alone, Siwan already seemed much better than those two.

Sure, he was way younger than her—but so what? In the end, rank is king.

Besides, he was good-looking too.

‘Ah, meetings are going to be so much more enjoyable now. I should treat myself to a skin treatment after this.’

After the meeting, on the way back to the division head’s office—

Seo Wangu walked closely beside Siwan, smiling with satisfaction.

“Director, you did great today.”

“It’s all thanks to you, Secretary Seo. The materials you gave me were a huge help.”

Siwan’s genuine gratitude made Wangu scratch the back of his head sheepishly.

“Oh, you flatter me. But I didn’t expect you to memorize all of it!”

“Yeah, even I was surprised. I remembered everything I read so clearly.”

He meant it. He’d studied hard, sure, but recalling it all so clearly had shocked even him.

As they chatted and walked, Siwan spotted someone.

A round face wearing round glasses, eyes fixed on a square monitor. Not conventionally pretty or cute—but oddly endearing.

Next to her sat a young male employee, uncomfortably close.

It was new recruit, Koo Donggeun.

‘Does that punk not have anything better to do? Why is he always glued to Assistant Manager Ju Hana’s side?’

He’d done nothing wrong, but Siwan already found him annoying.

As if reading his mind, Seo Wangu leaned in and whispered,

“That’s not slacking off, sir. Assistant Manager Ju is his mentor—he’s learning the ropes from her.”

Siwan looked blankly at Seo Wangu.

“I didn’t ask.”

“Oh! Y-yes, of course. I just thought you might be wondering, haha…”
