Chapter 4

. Unusual Circumstances

Late at night, in Do Myungjin’s study.

With his eyes closed, he leaned back in his chair.
Though he could’ve dressed comfortably at home, that just wasn’t in his nature.
His graying hair was neatly combed, and every button of his shirt was fastened all the way to the top — not a hair out of place.

His facial features were striking — a square jaw, tightly pressed lips, and intense eyes beneath thick eyebrows.
To a stranger, he might appear angry, but that was just his normal expression.
In reality, he was a warm and tender-hearted man.
That stern look was more of a defense mechanism — a way to avoid looking weak.

His lips finally parted, and a deep, gravelly voice flowed out.

“Hi, Pixby.”

[Yes, how can I assist you?]

“Call Secretary Seo Wangu.”

[Would you like me to call Seo Wangu’s secretary?]

“No. Call Secretary Seo Wangu.”

[Understood. Connecting you to Seo Wangu’s secretary.]

Do Myungjin’s thick brows twitched.

“Ugh! I’ll just call him myself.”

Frustrated, he picked up his phone and searched his contacts for “Seo Wangu.”
The result that popped up was: “DK Foods Executive Office – Manager Seo Wangu.”

He smacked his forehead with his palm.

“Right. I saved it as ‘Manager Seo Wangu.’ I must be getting old.”

Grumbling about his memory, he tapped the call button.

An ad voice from a famous actor played through the receiver:

[We treat our consumers like family. With the mindset that our own loved ones eat our food, we strive to create healthy and delicious products.]

Even his ringtone was a DK Foods commercial.
Of course, Seo Wangu, ever the loyal subordinate, had set it as his ringtone.

Do Myungjin smirked.

“This guy. Sometimes he goes overboard.”

Still, he chuckled fondly to himself.

Soon, Seo Wangu answered the phone with a brisk voice.

[Yes, President! This is Seo Wangu speaking.]

In response to his energetic tone, Do Myungjin replied gently.

“Hello, Secretary Seo. You’ve worked hard today.”

[Thank you, sir. You’ve entrusted an old dog like me with the honorable task of assisting your son — I’ll do my best.]

Self-deprecation was a bad habit of Seo Wangu’s, especially in front of Do Myungjin.
What it really meant was, “Please compliment me.”

Do Myungjin knew this all too well by now.

“Old dog, huh? Come on now. There’s no one else I’d trust with Siwan. I’ll be counting on you, as always.”

[I’ll do everything in my power to live up to your expectations.]

“Don’t risk your life over it. So, any unusual circumstances?”

[In fact, I was just on my way to report one in person.]

“Huh?”

Knock knock.

Even before he finished his sentence, someone tapped on the window.

“Whoa!”

Startled, he jumped back at the sight of Seo Wangu outside the window.
His few remaining hairs were slick with sweat and stuck to his forehead like wet seaweed.

Do Myungjin threw the window open and shouted.

“Why the hell are you at the window when we have a perfectly good door?!”

“You told me to come discreetly if there was something important to report to you without alerting the family. Ha ha ha!”

“You could’ve just called!”

“I brought documents, and I wanted to see your face, sir.”

As Seo Wangu climbed through the window, Do Myungjin leaned out and looked around.

“Dobae, Reman — those mutts didn’t even bark when an intruder came in? Useless watchdogs.”

Dobae and Reman were the Doberman brothers he kept at home.

“Oh, I put them to sleep for a bit. They’ll wake up soon — no need to worry.”

“Put them to sleep?”

“Yes, sir.”

Do Myungjin looked puzzled, having no idea that Seo Wangu meant he’d literally knocked them out cold.

He sat down, and Seo Wangu stood respectfully at the desk.

“So, what’s this unusual matter?”

“Well, it’s about…”

But before he could speak, Do Myungjin raised his hand.

“Oh, look at me. Would you like some tea? I’ve got ginseng tea you like.”

“No, thank you. I know it’s late — I’ll make it quick. Here.”

He quickly placed a document envelope on the desk.

Do Myungjin put on his glasses with haste.

Coming all the way to his house at this hour meant it was serious.
He couldn’t wait to find out what unusual situation involved Siwan.

He wasn’t worried. His son wasn’t the type to cause trouble.
If anything, he was excited.

‘Something unusual on the first day? Oh, this is going to be interesting!’

Inside the envelope were personnel records — including a résumé.

Do Myungjin read the name and tilted his head.

“Ju Hana? Clumsy Miss Ju Hana?”

“Oh, do you know this employee, sir?”

With thousands of employees, it wasn’t strange for the president to recognize a name —
But knowing their nickname? Now that was unusual.

“Of course. But what about her?”

“This happened today…”

Seo Wangu relayed the break room incident in detail, sticking closely to the facts.

As he listened, a strange gleam appeared in Do Myungjin’s eyes.

“So you’re saying Siwan said ‘It smells delicious’?”

“Yes, sir. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I think he wanted a bite. His body language was like this…”

Seo Wangu mimicked Siwan’s surprised face and the way he’d hungrily eyed the spoonful of kimchi fried rice.

“He… He wanted to eat it?”

“That’s right.”

A flush of color returned to Do Myungjin’s face.

Siwan had long despised eating.
With his perfect poker face, no outsider would ever know, but he suffered from a severe eating disorder.
No known cause, no known cure.

Watching his son force food down just to survive had been heartbreaking.

So many times, he’d seen Siwan pretend to enjoy a bite in front of guests, and it had crushed him every time.

But now — that prideful son had practically begged for one bite.
It was nothing short of a miracle.

“So, Ju Hana made that kimchi fried rice herself?”

“I looked into it. She always brings lunch from home and eats alone.”

Do Myungjin stroked his chin, deep in thought.

‘Are all her dishes like that? Or was it just the kimchi fried rice? Maybe it was just Siwan’s condition today?’

He finally spoke with a serious tone.

“Secretary Seo, look into her family background in detail. Are her parents alive? Where do they live? Also, find out her ideal type and hobbies.”

“I’ll do my best.”

If there was even a chance that Siwan might enjoy food again, Do Myungjin was willing to do anything.

No method had ever worked before — he had nearly given up.
But now, hope had returned.

He looked at Seo Wangu with heartfelt gratitude.

“This is the best news I’ve had in a long time. Thank you, Secretary Seo.”

* * *

Early morning — no, it was more accurate to say dawn.

Ju Hana stood at the kitchen table in a loose black T-shirt with a stretched neckline.

One might think she’d just rolled out of bed, but this was her version of “work attire.”
Normally, even she wouldn’t wear a shirt like this to the office — but she’d forgotten to run the dryer last night and had no other choice.

She stood with hands on her hips, staring seriously at the table.

On it sat an open lunchbox with a beautifully grilled yellow croaker inside.

She gently touched the side of the fish with her fingertip.

“Good. Cooled just right. I can close the lid now.”

She sucked her finger and sealed the lunchbox.

Next to it were neatly prepped ingredients for kimchi fried rice.

She sighed heavily.

That’s right — she was planning to make it for Siwan.
But even now, she wasn’t sure if she was going overboard.

“What if I’m just being extra for no reason?”

Still, she pulled out a wok and placed it on the stove.

“I’ll make it anyway. If I don’t give it to him, I’ll eat it. Or maybe give it to the team lead.”

Her face looked worn out. She’d barely slept.

Siwan’s regretful face as he walked away, unable to take a bite of her kimchi fried rice, had haunted her all night.

Why did he look so disappointed?
Maybe… it was the last thing his mom made before she left when he was a kid?

She shook her head vigorously.

“That’s a terrible joke — his mom Samantha Kim is alive and well.”

Fun fact: the “D” in DK Foods stands for Do Myungjin, and the “K” is for Kim, as in Samantha Kim.

She sighed again.

“Did someone die from not eating kimchi fried rice or what?”

Muttering, she tossed a generous portion of chopped beef brisket into the now-hot wok.
It turned from red to gray, giving off a savory aroma.

Once the beef fat pooled at the bottom, she dumped in the chopped kimchi.

Sizzle!

She grabbed the wok with both hands and tossed it back and forth.

Kimchi pieces flew through the air. She hurriedly stepped back to avoid getting splattered.

Whirl.

As the scent filled the kitchen, she added minced garlic.

Just then, a chubby man in a tank top and shorts entered, eyes still puffy from sleep.

This was her dad, Joo Pyunghwa — owner of the neighborhood’s most popular diner, Bunsik Heaven.

Oh, and one more thing — he used to be a violent crimes detective.
