Chapter 23
“This may have been ordered by Marquis Hemes because the west side is quiet.”
Urian clenched his teeth.
He had said it was a personal ill will, but it wasnât easy for an ordinary man with no skills to secretly track Claudioâs movements.Â
Commoners wouldnât even know what Claudio looked like.
âSo someone must be using his ill will.â
But the mastermind behind this is Marquis Hemes?
âThat man canât even hide his feelings and isnât very smart.â
Judging by that, now that he had succeeded in making his daughter the kingâs fiancĂ©e, it seemed unlikely heâd make such a foolish choice.
But maybe because he had experienced his familyâs ruin once, he was always cautious in business.Â
Such a careful man wouldnât handle such a serious matter so carelessly, risking his family and life.
âWell, people sometimes do things you canât understand.â
Claudio lowered his eyes and muttered,
âIt wonât hurt to find out.â
âI will look into it.â
Claudio nodded at the satisfactory answer.
âDuke, can you walk?â
âNo. I canât walk any more today.â
âThen I will come to take you tomorrow.â
âIâm not going.â
Claudio answered lightly.
âExcuse me?â
âI keep making you say the same thing today…â
Claudio slightly frowned.
âI said Iâm not going.â
âWhaâ?!â
Urian shouted without realising it.
Claudioâs frown deepened.
âSince when do you speak to me in that tone?â
âAh, sorry, I just got surprised.â
âThereâs nothing to be surprised about. Am I someone who finds it difficult to choose where to stay?
âThatâs not what I meant…â
Why does he insist on staying here?!
He could get better treatment at the villa, which is far better than this place.
âIs it because of Marsha?â
Urian thought again.
Claudioâs attitude toward Marsha was strange.
Claudio rarely smiled at anyone easily.Â
Visd might say, âWhat? You smile often.âÂ
But Urian knew that most of his smiles were cold sneers.Â
Even though it appeared to be a lovely, flawless smile.
But with Marsha, he had smiled for realâeven if it was a joke.
In addition, he came out anxiously to find her despite his illness.Â
Even if there might be a stranger in the forest, Marsha had just disappeared for a moment.
âThere was no scream or anything.â
He was worried, so he just searched for her.
Claudio was a great ruler and a leader worth following, but he was not a person who âpersonallyâ worried about othersâŠ
Urian swallowed hard and asked,
âHow long do you plan to stay here?â
âWell…â
Claudio slowly moved his eyes.
âIâll stay…â
His gaze moved back to the front door.
âUntil I get bored.â
Claudioâs lips curved smoothly.
***
âYouâre staying?â
Marsha said with a shocked expression.
âYes.â
âWhy? You should go back. The others must be worried about you, too.â
âIâve already proven Iâm safe, so it doesnât matter.â
Claudio looked at Urian for agreement.
âThatâs right. The important thing is Dioâs safety.â
âBut still, is it okay to change your place of stay like this without permission? The Duke might be on leave, but you came here to attend to him.â
âThe Duke is too busy to care about this kind of thing.â
âButâŠâ
Marsha couldnât seem to accept it and opened her mouth again.Â
Claudio raised one eyebrow.Â
He had expected some opposition, but didnât think sheâd try this hard to drive him away.
Then Marsha finally spoke up.
ââŠIf you go back, you can get treatment from a doctor.â
Claudioâs eyes widened.Â
Marsha glanced at Claudioâs face, then quickly turned her head away.
âThis small house will also feel bigger.â
ââŠWell, I feel sorry about that too, but because of the Duke, I canât go back.â
Marsha turned her head as if to say, âWhat do you mean?â
âHer face looks like a curious cat whoâs also scared.â
Claudio almost burst out laughing but held it back and said,
âHe hates subordinates who get beaten up. If I show up like this, heâll be annoyed. Itâs better to return after Iâve fully recovered.â
âThe Duke doesnât like seeing his men show up beaten like this. If I went back in this state, heâd be annoyed. Itâs better to return once Iâm fully healed.â
âSo he doesnât mind if his men disappear from duty but gets upset if they return injured?â
That makes no sense.Â
Marsha narrowed her eyes in suspicion, and just then, Urian carefully stepped in.
âThe Duke can be… like that sometimes.â
âI donât know much about him, but didnât he even send knights to search for you? Would someone like that be so cold?â
Urian clenched his fist.Â
How could he say something to ease the suspicion in those big eyes?
âAh.â
A good idea came to Urian, and his eyes lit up.
âThe Duke didnât order us to search. We found him on our own.â
Claudio stared at Urian with a look of disbelief.
Marsha asked in disbelief,
âSo the Duke doesnât even know this person went missing?â
Over a hundred people are serving the Duke now. Unless itâs someone close, he wouldnât notice if one or two go missing.â
Marsha showed a disappointed expression.
âThen the reason you secretly searched for him wasâŠâ
âYes. We were worried the Duke might hear about it.â
Urian felt proud of how smoothly his lie came out.
âI didnât know I could lie this well.â
But it wasnât entirely a lie, was it? After all, the Duke didnât order them to find Claudio.
âSo itâs better for him to return after some recovery.â
Urian answered proudly.Â
Marsha grew more troubled.
âDuke GloriaâŠâ
He was known for his strict rule and ruthless nature.Â
But after seeing him throw a grand festival for the people, sheâd wondered if he might be kinder than the rumours suggested.
âHe really must have a bad personality⊠How could he treat his men like this?â The doubt in her eyes toward Claudio shifted into disapproval toward the Duke.â
Urian, thinking he had successfully convinced her, proudly looked at Claudio.
âUh-oh.â
Noticing Claudio looking displeased, Yurian quickly turned his head.
âWhat? Did I mess up somewhere?â
At that moment, Marsha sighed heavily and said,
â…Anyway, I understand. Then how about staying somewhere other than my place? I donât know how to serve nobles well, so Iâm sure Iâd make mistakes.â
âServe you? What do you mean by that?â
Claudio asked with a bitter smile.
âYouâre a noble anyway, right?â
âMe?â
Claudio pointed at himself and asked.
â…No?â
âWell, who knows?â
He shrugged his shoulders.
âHeâs joking again.â
She closed her eyes tightly and controlled her anger, then said,
âSo I guess itâs okay to treat you like I usually do.â
âI donât mind how you treat me, but thereâs one thing I want you to fix.â
âWhat is it?â
Marsha’s beautiful, clear eyes twisted slightly.Â
Her expression clearly said, âThen what should I call you?â
Claudio leaned his chin on his hand and smiled.
âYou should call me Dio. You said it just fine earlierâwhy not now? Oh⊠are you feeling shy?â
âShould I just go stay somewhere else?â
Marsha’s face flushed as she snapped.
It wasnât much of a threatâbarely enough to scare a flyâbut this time Claudio decided to back down.
“Come on, don’t blame me. I enjoy being here.
âThe inn in Sedem is much better than this place.â
âThat place is noisy.â
True enough, it was already crowded, and with the festival, even more people filled the inn and its surroundings.
Then Urian cautiously stepped in.
âIâll repay you later. Could you please let us stay a little longer?â
â…Repay.â
She wasnât saving Claudio for money.Â
And having ties with nobles or high people might reveal her status and put her at risk, so she didnât even dream of compensation.
âBut somehow, these people seem willing to ignore my situation.â
And now theyâre even offering repayment?Â
Nothing wrong with that.Â
It was good.
âJust for a little while then.â
Marsha answered Urian embarrassedly but shot a sharp look at Claudio.
âLike I said earlier, donât expect me to be nice or treat you properly like a noble.â
âThatâs fine. This is more than enough.â
Claudio smiled gently, narrowing his eyes.
âHe sure smiles a lot.â
Her cheeks slightly flushed, she turned away completely.Â
Claudio asked suddenly as she turned around.
Claudio narrowed his eyes and gave a gentle smile.
âHe sure knows how to smile.â
Her cheeks flushed softly as she abruptly turned her back on him.Â
Claudio called out as she spun around suddenly.
âWhatâs wrong? Did I do something wrong?â
âNo.â
âThen why did you turn away?â
âJust because.â
âThereâs no such thing as âjust because.â
âWell, there is now. So stop asking.â
âHa.â
Watching their bickering, Urian swallowed hard.
âAm I dreaming right now…?â
An ordinary woman and the Duke of Gloria arguing?
âNo, this is something you wouldnât even see in a dream…â
