Chapter 20
Marsha felt a lump in her throat.
Berry always cared for and treasured her like this.Â
But Marsha couldnât give anything in returnâŠ
âWhy do I always end up losing out like this?â
Marsha opened her mouth, then closed it again.Â
If she said this, kind Berry would firmly say, âItâs not losing out!â
“I’m just getting all the time. What can I do?”
“You just received it when? Furthermore, I did nothing noteworthy to merit gratitude.
âThatâs a big deal. If it were me… I wouldnât do this. I canât.â
In the past, Emelide, the countâs daughter, was rich, so she could always give to others.
If she had been poor, she would have lived without giving.Â
But Berry worried about her living expenses every month while still caring for her friends.
âYouâre amazing, Berry.â
âOh, itâs nothing! I just brought some food, and you say such things…â
Berry scratched her cheek with an embarrassed smile.
âI want to say, âLetâs have tea together,â but…â
Marsha didnât want to send Berry away like this.Â
But if someone inside the room was found outâŠ
âBerry might get into trouble.â
Just like Claudio said before, Marsha wasnât sure if the people looking for Claudio were his comrades.Â
They talked about rewards and told her to go to the dukeâs house, but that might be a trap.Â
Maybe someone is waiting near the dukeâs house, watching for someone who knows his whereabouts.
â…Has anyone come looking for you since that day?â
Marsha asked carefully.
âThat day? Oh, you mean when Gloria Dukeâs knights came?â
Berry shook her head.
âNo, no one else. Since theyâre holding a big festival, I guess they found him.â
Marsha slowly nodded.
âSo the people who came for Berry that day werenât the dukeâs knights?â
If not, maybe Claudio was a commoner, and the duke didnât care much.
Whatever the truth was, Marsha felt relieved that Berry hadnât met anyone dangerous.
Then Berry sighed deeply, full of regret.
âAh, I wish they had come to my house.â
âBecause of money, right?â
Marsha asked with a small smile, and Berry clenched her fist.
âOf course! Itâs too bad. That reward from Gloria Dukeâs house must have been a huge amount. Then I couldâve fixed my house, expanded the farm, and oh, gone on a trip too.â
Berry’s face was shaking from exhaustion.
âNo use being regretful now. Anyway, Marsha, Iâm going. Donât just study all the timeâeat well and take care of yourself, okay?â
âUhâŠâ
Marsha hesitated briefly, then bravely said,
âIâll walk you home.â
âWhat? No! Donât tire yourself out for nothing.â
âIâm not tired.â
Marsha said firmly.Â
Berry’s large eyes grew wide, and she gave a gentle smile.
“All right, just to the large rock. I refuse to compromise any more!
âAlright. Got it.â Before going out, Marsha glanced toward the room where Claudio was.Â
It was quiet. âHe looked like he fell asleep earlier. Still sleeping?â
A patient who is sleeping doesn’t need to be informed that she is leaving.
âItâs not very far… itâll be fine.â
In the end, Marsha walked Berry home.
âOh dear! You came all the way here!â
âBut I didnât want to stop talking.â
âWell, same here⊠Oh! Since youâre here, take some butter and milk with you!â
âNo, I already have plenty of food at homeâŠâ
âAh, butter and milk are different!â
So Marsha had to take Berryâs gifts with her.
“All I get is… what should I do?” Worried, she thought.
Her eyes then became brighter.
âCosmetics.â
In her grandmotherâs book, there was a simple way to make lotion and toner.Â
It was very basic and needed improvement, butâŠ
âItâs worth a try.â
First, sheâd need to make some fragrant oil.
âLuckily, many fragrant flowers are blooming these days…â
Berry is a lovely girl, so she thought of making a sweet floral scent for her.Â
For the elderly woman, a gentle and serene fragrance.
Oh, and also for the man.Â
He might feel awkward using such things, but he would still use them.
Marsha walked slowly, imagining this with joy.Â
She promised to walk Berry just that far; she was passing the large rock.
“Hey, you.”
The voice of an unfamiliar man suddenly emerged from behind.
Marsha turned sharply and saw a stranger coldly looking down at her.Â
She went pale as if she saw a ghost.
âWh-who are you?â
She stepped back and asked.
âThatâs what I should be asking.â
The man slowly followed her and spoke.
âYouâre not supposed to be living in that house.â
â…â
Marshaâs eyes trembled.Â
How does he know that?
âWhy are you secretly living in someone elseâs house? Whatâs your name, and where are you from?â
â…Who are you to ask that?â
Marsha kept stepping back, asking.Â
Only a guard or a knight of Gloria Dukeâs family would ask such questions.Â
But guards or knights wouldnât hide their bodies in robes like this.
âI donât think I owe you any answers.â
The man said harshly.
Trying to calm her pounding heart, Marsha glared at him.
âIf you donât reveal who you are, I have no reason to answer either.â
The man frowned and reached his hand toward Marsha.
â!â
She tried to avoid his hand, but his large hand grabbed her slender wrist roughly.
âUgh!â
The bag in her hand dropped to the ground with a crash.Â
A milk bottle broke, and white milk quickly soaked into the floor.
âDonât be rude. Answer me. Who are you? An illegal smuggler?â
The man growled and pulled Marsha toward him.Â
Her wrist felt like it might break.
âIf not…!â
Just then, as the man opened his mouth wide,
Whoosh! Something flew and hit the head of the man precisely.
âUgh!â
He groaned in pain.
Frozen by the sudden situation, Marsha stood still.
Then a voice sounded.
âLet go of her right now.â
âDio…â
The man who always spoke calmly now showed a sharp anger in his voice and eyes.
âHow did you even get here…?â
He was struggling to stand properly.Â
Was his body okay?
Even at this moment, Marsha worried about Claudio.
The man holding his bleeding forehead suddenly raised his head sharply.
âDuâ!â
âShut up.â
Claudio quickly shut the manâs mouth with a short curse.
âHow many times do I have to tell you to let go of her hand?â
âAh.â
The man finally released Marshaâs wrist.Â
Holding her sore wrist, Marsha stood there, unsure of what to do.Â
What was going on?
Do they know each other?
Confused, she saw Claudio reach out his hand.
âCome here.â
ââŠâ
Marsha felt strange.Â
Her heart was still pounding wildly, and her legs were so weak it was amazing she could stand, but a strange calmness held her firmlyâŠ
âIt feels like Iâm hypnotised or something…â
Like water flowing downhill, Marsha moved toward Claudio.
âYouâre not feeling well, so how did you get here?â
âIs that important right now?â
He frowned as he spoke, making Marsha flinch.
After a short sigh, he finally responded to her query.
“What else could it be due to?”
 “…due to me?”
“There has been no sign of the person who hardly ever leaves their garden. And this forest might still be crawling with the people who did this to me.â
Claudio spoke with some anger, keeping his eyes on Marsha.
Marsha blinked.
âHe was worried about me?â
Truly caring about someone else is harder than you think.Â
Even among people who have built long relationships, many worries are just words.Â
But this man, despite his condition, went out to find her because he cared.Â
It could be his compassion or his regard for the person who saved his life.
â⊠Iâm sorry. I thought it wasnât right to wake someone who was sleepingâŠâ
Marsha bowed her head and rubbed her sore wrist.Â
Seeing her wrist swollen and red, Claudio gritted his teeth and glared at the man who was stumbling behind him.
âThat bastard…â
The manâUrianâwas panicking.Â
He had finally found his master, whom heâd been so worried about.
He wanted to run over and check if she was okay, but his instincts shouted,
âIf you go near now, youâll die.â
Urianâs mind was in chaos.Â
What exactly was happening?Â
Who was this woman?
