Chapter 14
The knight handed Urian a pocket watch with a small lily carved on itâtoo delicate to belong to a man.Â
Urian recognized it instantly.
âThe dukeâs pocket watch…!â
He asked urgently,
âWhere did you find this?â
âUnder a tree on the eastern edge of the forest, near some bloodstains.â
âAny other clues?â
âNo significant traces.â
At that moment, Visd added,
âPerhaps someone treated him and took him away. There shouldn’t have been more blood if the wound had been life-threatening, but there wasn’t.
It appeared that someone dropped the pocket watch while Claudio was being carried.
âI see.â
Urian felt a dizzy relief after days of worry, but he couldnât let his guard down yet.
âWe need to investigate the villages near where the watch was found.â
Visd nodded quickly.

Marsha stared intently at the medicine in her hand.
Before Dio had woken up, she had been carefully feeding him the bitter liquid little by little.
âHe should be able to drink it on his own soon.â
Marsha glanced toward Claudioâs room.Â
She had checked on him earlier, but he had been sleeping so deeply he didnât even notice her calling him.
âHow can he sleep so deeply in a situation like this?â
âŠThat sly man.
Even after facing death, he hadnât lost the colour in his faceâsomething about that didnât sit right with her.Â
And the moment he woke up, he started talking like nothing had happened.
âIs he showing off his looks or his status?â
Marsha was a little sharp with him, of course.Â
After what heâd been through, how could she smile and be kind?
â…Still, I guess he must be a bit confused. He canât remember anything.â
Trying to shake off her sudden guilt, Marsha shook her head.
âForget it. Why feel sorry? Do you think heâd care?â
Just as Marsha frowned deeply and was about to bring the medicine to Claudio, someone knocked on the door.Â
It was already dark outside.
âWho could it be?â
âMarsha! Itâs me!â
It was Berry.
Startled, Marsha hurried to open the door.
âBerry, what are you doing at this hour? What if you ran into a wolf?â
âOh, lately the dukeâs knights have been hunting, so we havenât even heard wolf howls.â
âStillâŠâ
Berry glanced at Marshaâs worried face and smiled a little.
She didnât want to worry Marsha but felt good that someone cared.
âWhy did you come at this time? Is someone hurt?â
âNo, nothing like that. I just wondered if anyone had come looking today.â
Marsha blinked.
âNo oneâs come.â
âOh, good. I was worried someone mightâve gone to your house since I told them no one lives there after your grandma passed away.â
Who had she told that to?Â
Just as Marsha’s eyes filled with curiosity, Berry continued.
âEarlier, the dukeâs knights came to our house. Not just oursâthey searched the whole village.â
Marshaâs eyes widened in shock.
âWhy would such important people come suddenly…?â
âTheyâre looking for someone.â
Marsha took a shaky breath and asked,
âFor someone…?â
Berry quickly waved her hands, worried Marsha might misunderstand.
âTheyâre looking for a man. Blonde hair, red eyes, very tall, and quite handsome.â
Berry hoped to reassure Marsha, but she couldnât feel at ease.
âOh no.â
It had to be the man in that room.Â
She suspected he was noble, but connected to someone so important?
Marshaâs heart trembled.
âWhy are they looking for him?â
âThey wouldnât say why. I guess commoners donât need to know.â
People in high places! Berry shook her head and added,
âBut you know whatâs weird? They told everyone not to tell anyone they came looking for someone. Isnât that strange? If youâre searching for someone, wouldnât it make sense to spread the word around town?â
ââŠâŠâ
âThey said once they secure the person theyâre looking for, theyâll come right away and give a generous reward. When I told my dad about this, he said it sounds like theyâre after a runaway criminal!â
The dukeâs knights are personally searching, but at the same time, theyâre ordering everyone not to spread rumours.Â
Yet they promise money if someone captures the man.
âMy dad thinks heâs probably right. If the dukeâs knights are involved, this must be a very dangerous criminal.â
Berry wrapped her arm and shivered, then suddenly became serious.
âAnyway, Marsha, Iâm worried about you. You go to places no one else does. What if you run into someone dangerous while youâre alone?â
âAhâŠâ
“Just in case, stay away from the blond man, even if he is barely alive! It could be dangerous! And tell me right away! I’ll let the Duke’s family know about it. Oh! And the reward money will be all yours!â
Worried Marsha might misunderstand her intentions, Berry quickly added.
Marsha gave a bitter smile and shook her head.
âYou donât have to explain; I donât misunderstand your sincerity.â
âMarshaâŠâ
Berryâs eyes filled with tears at Marshaâs trust.
âAnyway, since the knights will be searching around for a while, if anyone questions you, say youâre my cousin staying at our house, okay? If you say you live in an empty house, theyâll surely get suspicious.â
 âI will. Thanks.â
âOh, donât thank me so much!â
Berry scratched her head shyly, then her eyes sparkled as she got an idea.
âHey, why donât you both just come stay at my house forââ
But before she finished, she saw the bowl in Marshaâs hands.
âHuh? Whatâs that?â
âWhy do you have medicine at this hour? WaitâMarsha! You cancelled dinner plans and stayed home all day⊠Are you sick?!â
 âNo, not because of that.â
âThen whatâs this?!â
Marsha panicked.Â
Should she tell Berry about the man in the room now?Â
Berry was kind and trustworthyâsheâd probably report the man to the dukeâs knights for Marshaâs sake.Â
 ButâŠ
âIf that man talks about me…â
Not only Marsha, but maybe Berry could be in danger too.
Helping an illegal resident hide is also a crime.
âIâm studying a new medicine.â
Marsha smiled as she answered, and the worried look in Berryâs eyes slowly cleared.
âIs that so?â
âYes. Itâs a bit wasteful to use herbs this wayâŠâ
âNothing is a waste when it comes to studying!â
Berry said excitedly, then added with a sigh,
âAh, but I guess itâs more comfortable here than at my house to study?â
 â…â
Marsha answered with a faint smile.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do.Â
Alright, I’m leaving now.
Anyway, be careful for a while.
Study hard⊠and donât forget to eat and get enough sleep, okay?â
âWait. Iâll walk you back.â
âWhat? No, itâs okay!â
âBut…â
âItâs fine. The wolves are treated unfairly by the forest’s extreme quiet.
Marsha offered, but Berry firmly refused and quickly left.
Marsha closed the door only after Berryâs small lantern disappeared from view.
âHa…â
Her mind was complicated.
Would Berry get home safely?Â
What should she do about the man in the room?Â
She was filled with worry.
Who is he?
Was he not disappointed that no one was looking for him because he was being chased?
âBy someone that important?â
His body also looked unusual.Â
There were old scars here and there, including some that looked like knife wounds.
What kind of normal person would have such injuries?
â…Could that man be a knight?â
So maybe he wasnât running because heâd done something wrong, but was caught up in something complicated?
âIf rumours spread that a famous Gloria duke family knight disappeared, it would damage their honour. So maybe theyâre searching secretly.â
Still, the letter said the dukeâs people were supposed to arrive yesterday or today.Â
The timing didnât quite line up.
âThen again, unlike official notices, they might have come early…â
Her father sometimes inspected earlier than scheduled, either because of changed plans or on purpose.
That happens sometimes, too.Â
The lord could check the usual conditions when he came unexpectedly.
So Gloria Dukeâs group might have arrived early.Â
But that was just one possibility.
âAh, my head hurts.â
Marsha pressed hard on her temple beside her throbbing forehead.Â
She wished she could drink the medicine in her hand herself.
ââŠIf only it didnât take so long to make it.â
Marsha walked heavily to Claudioâs door.
 Knocking, she called out,
âExcuse me.
 ââŠâŠâ
 âAre you sleeping?â
No answer came from behind the door.
âIâll come in for a moment.â
She waited briefly, but still no reply.Â
Carefully, Marsha opened the door.Â
Claudio was sleeping in the same position as the last time she saw him.
âSleeping like a mouse.â
Marsha lit the lamp on the bedside table, and his face, blurry in the dark, became clear.
It was breathtakingly beautiful, but now it was just a headache to Marsha.
âHey.â
She called him again from closer by.
She wanted to shake him awake, but didnât want to hurt his wounds.
âHey⊠please wake up.â
She called louder this time, but his eyelashes didnât move at all.
 Whatâs wrong?
âCould he have lost consciousness again?â
Marsha carefully checked his condition.
His breathing was calm, his expression peacefulâŠ
âHeâs just in a deep sleep.â
Relieved, Marshaâs lip curled in dissatisfaction.
âI thought I wouldnât have to feed him like this anymore.â
Sighing, she brought a chair and sat beside him.
As she had done for days, she tried carefully to drip medicine into the corner of his lipsâŠ
But his lips were tightly closed.
âOh.â
What to do?Â
Hesitating several times, she gently put a finger on his lower lip.
His lips, though beautifully shaped, were dry and rough.
She slowly began to pull his lip down toward his chin.
Thatâs when he opened his eyes.
âHuh?â
Did she see it wrong because it was dark?
Just then, as the situation seemed to go wrong, he slowly moved his lips while looking at her.
 â…What are you doing now?â
