Chapter 26
Several days had passed since Urian left.
Marshaâs eyes sparkled as she looked over the neatly sorted herbs stacked before her.
âSure enough, working together really speeds things up.â
If they kept selling herbs at this pace, theyâd be able to save money even faster.
âBut how much will I need to hire an informant in the big city?â
She gave Claudio a sidelong glance as he was nearly done processing the batch for the day.Â
Catching her gaze, he smirked and asked,
âWhatâs on your mind? Did I mess up again?â
 â…No.â
âThen why?â
âYouâre living in Gloria, right?â
âYeah.â
âHowâs the cost of living there?â
What? The cost of living?
Claudio rolled his eyes upward and looked at her.
âWhy do you want to know that?â
Marsha couldnât bring herself to say. I wanted to roughly calculate how much it would cost to hire an informant.Â
If she could have, she would have asked outright from the start how much an informant in Gloria cost.
âI was just wondering how much you could make selling herbs.â
âI donât know the exact market price for herbs, but generally, agricultural goods sell for about two to three times the price here.â
According to that estimate, it would cost at least 150 gold to hire an informant in Gloria.
âThatâs insane. I may not even be able to save that much even if I work extremely hard for years.
She recalled Urianâs wordsâshe said theyâd pay her back later, right?
â…For a noble, 150 gold probably isnât that much money, right?â
She was a noble, but she had never made a purchase herself. She had no financial sensibility.
Just as she was stroking her chin, lost in thoughtâ
âTrying to get your hands on something in Gloria?â
Claudio asked, brushing dirt off his hands.Â
Marsha blinked.Â
She had only asked about prices.
She would appear interested in the price at which herbs could be sold, wouldn’t she?
He seems pretty surprised that I caught on to what heâs thinking.
Claudio smirked.
She doesnât even realise how much his thoughts show on his faceâŠ
If Claudio told the truth, sheâd have to work hard to hide her expressions around him from now on.Â
So, she suspected he had no intention of satisfying her curiosity.
âAnything you need, just say the word. I can get it for you.â
âI donât know what you think I want, but donât be so confident.â
âI can get anything. So just tell me what you want.â
Claudio gave a sly smile.
Marsha felt suspicious.
He was handsome, but honestly, he didnât look very trustworthyâwhen he smiled like that, it felt like he had some hidden agenda.
âYou donât look like you believe me. You think Iâll just listen and say I canât get it?â
She raised an eyebrow.Â
Marsha wasnât doubting his abilityâshe just wasnât sure if heâd willingly get her what she wanted.
He probably thinks what I want is some kind of âthing.â
If he knew she was asking about a person, that easygoing smile would vanish, replaced with a suspicious glare.
âForget it. I was just curious about the cost of living.â
âReally?â
He leaned toward her as he asked.
âReally,â she replied while Marsha moved herbs into a basket.
Just as she reached to lift the basket full of herbs,
âWhere do you plan to put this?â
Claudio got up and took the basket from her.
Her hand, now empty, twitched as she said,
âGive it back.â
âWhy? Do you think I’m going to steal this and sell it to Gloria?
He answered with a teasing grin.
âNo, itâs just… what if the patient has to carry the load?â
âIâm not so weak that I canât carry this.â
âNo, but still…â
Marsha reached out toward the basket, but he swiftly lifted it high out of her grasp.Â
She was dumbfounded.Â
That would surely pull at her wounds and make them worse.
âDonât you care? What if you make the injuries worse?!â
âIt was an instinctâI didnât even realise my hands moved. So donât just snatch other peopleâs things like that.â
So, thatâs my fault now?
Marsha glared at him and snorted.
âFine, fine. If you want to carry it, go ahead.â
She pulled a large, clean cloth from the cupboardâwashed and dried carefullyâand opened the front door.
âIâm going to dry the herbs in the sun. If you have time, come help hang them.â
Stepping into the warm sunlight, she turned back, expecting Claudio to followâbut he was still standing inside the house.
âWhy? You donât mind carrying the load, but you donât want to help dry the herbs?â
Her voice was sulky.
âNo, not that.â
âThen what?â
Claudio tilted his chin forward, gesturing toward something ahead.
Marsha turned her headâand froze.
There, standing partially hidden in the shadows of the forest, was a familiar figure.
âMarsha…!â
Berry called her name, eyes wide with shock as if they might pop out.
***
Berry took a sip of warm tea, then let out a long sigh.
âAlright… let me get this straight. You say you rescued this guy a few days ago?â
Marsha nodded.
âYeah.â
“Well, then, and then…”
Berry glanced at Claudio.
Gasp!
Meeting Claudioâs gaze, Berry jumped as if a lion had suddenly appeared before a rabbit.
â…Could you step outside for a moment?â
ââŠIâll give you two some space.â
Claudio rose from his seat.Â
Marsha looked up at him, flustered.
“How much should I tell her?” she wanted to ask him.
Then Claudio turned to her and said,
âTalk freely.â
He emphasised âfreely,â as if he already knew what she was worried about.
With a sly smile, he walked naturally into the next room, and as the door closed behind him, Berry sprang up from his seat.
âI told you before…! Be careful…!â
His small but intense voice struck Marshaâs chest sharply.
If Berry knew Dio was at the house that day, too, heâd probably feel hurt.
Marsha didnât want to deceive Berry, but she cared more about protecting him from pain, so she decided not to explain everything.
âSorry. But heâs not a criminal. Heâs from the dukeâs household.â
âR-Really?â
âYeah. I met one of his companions, too.â
âOh…â
It was a relief that he wasnât a bad personâŠ
âBut then, why is he still here even though he met his companion?â
âWell, if Duchess Gloria sees him injured, heâll get angry. So, I guess heâs planning to stay here until heâs mostly healed.â
âSo, youâll be here alone together until he gets better?â
âLooks like it.â
Marsha answered casually, but Berryâs face twisted in shock.
âWhatâs so shocking?â
âWell, you know… living alone with a man…â
Even if he wasnât a criminal, Berry couldnât be sure the man wasnât dangerous.
And even if he was as gentle as could be, he was still a manâsharing a home with him must be uncomfortable.
âSo far, nothing too uncomfortable has happened. Making the medicine is a bit bothersome, but honestly, thanks to him, Iâm getting to try making some. Plus, he helps out with work.â
Just as Berry was about to ask her bluntly, frustration creeping into his voice,
âBut there is one problem. The guy eats so much that the supplies run out quickly.â
âHuh…?â
âHe seriously eats a lot. That meat you brought? He nearly finished it all in one sitting. Honestly, Iâm pretty sure he is a knight.â
“What do you mean when you say that you’re pretty sure he’s a knight?”
âWell, you know when I asked him if heâs a knight, and he gave that annoying answer like âmaybe yes, maybe noâ? It drives me crazy.â
Ugh, Marsha scowled.
âBut he doesnât seem like someone who just sits at a desk all day, so Iâm betting he is a knight…â
Suddenly worried she might have sounded strange, Marsha hurriedly added,
âI only say that because I saw when I was treating himânot spying or anything like that…â
Her face flushed bright red.Â
Berry studied her quietly for a moment.
Marsha looks so full of life these days.
She found this new, lively side of her a little unfamiliarâand quite refreshing.
âSo, no real problems so far, right?â
Berry asked, a faint smile playing on his lips.
Marsha cooled the flush from her cheeks and nodded.
âYeah.â
âWow, Marsha, youâre amazing. If it were me, my heart wouldnât survive this.â
âWhy?â
âWhy? Look at his face! I was seriously shocked. If you hadnât said he wasnât a bad guy without any proof, I wouldâve just assumed you were taken by his face…â
âReaaaally? If it were me, I probably wouldâve just fallen for him…â
Marsha laughed, thinking Berry was joking, but Berry was dead serious.
âOh! By the way, I came because I have something to tell you.â
âYeah? What is it?â
Berry hesitated for a moment, then sighed as he spoke.
âHave you ever seen James?â
The radiant smile on Marshaâs face instantly vanished.
