“At the very least, she was helpful with my work and lived frugally. So, yeah, it was a little shabby.”

A bitter, incredulous laugh escaped through the gap in Elise’s lips.

She had worried, even half expected, that Peidan might still have lingering feelings for Leticia.

But to think he’d use that against her as a weapon.

“You… You really think that’s something to say to me? To the woman carrying your child?”

At the mention of the child in her womb, Peidan visibly flinched.

Right then, the carriage arrived at the duke’s estate.

Before Peidan could say another word, Elise stepped down first.

“Don’t give him any room. Leave him unsettled.”

Only then could she keep control of the relationship.

But the moment she got to her room and shut the door, the emotions she had hidden burst out.

“Peidan still has feelings for that woman.”

He might be denying it out of pride, but as a third party, Elise could see those lingering feelings with painful clarity.

Realizing that he had subconsciously been comparing her to Leticia made her feel deeply uneasy.

Elise bit down hard on her nail.

“The only thing tethering Peidan to me is the baby.”

But that child had to disappear soon. If her belly didn’t grow, people would become suspicious.

However… what would happen to Peidan’s heart if the child vanished?

Would he go back to Leticia once the ‘baby’—his last tie to Elise—was gone?

“That can’t happen…!”

After all she’d done to make it this far.

With the duchess’s position just within reach, she couldn’t let it slip away now.

“I need to find a way.”

A way to quietly take care of the child that never existed… and to make Peidan give up on Leticia completely.
