“Just thinking about the crown prince makes me so tired…”

Because he was the human who caused me unimaginable scandal and hardship. The mere thought of crossing paths with him again made me dislike it intensely.

“But the chance of meeting him at the masquerade ball is pretty slim.”

I recalled the date of the masquerade ball in my mind. There were still a few days left.

“I’ll just think about it when that time comes.”

Wrapped in exhaustion, I arrived at my room and collapsed into sleep almost immediately. A few days later, I woke up.

When I opened my eyes, John was right in front of me.

“Madam? Are you awake?”

Fortunately, I hadn’t had any dreams this time, so I could just look at his excited face without worry.

“Did something happen to me?”

His voice was slightly hoarse, as if he was asking for reassurance.

“Did something happen?”

John clenched his teeth. His gaze was intense.

“You weren’t able to wake up for three days.”

“I slept that long?”

My eyes widened like a rabbit.

“No wonder I felt so refreshed…”

It was strange. I felt so good, even better than usual, that I could hardly call it pain. Even the parts that were usually a bit tired felt clear and fresh.

“If I’ve recovered this much, I could sleep for days without issue.”

But unlike my carefree thoughts, John spoke with a low, somber tone.

“I thought you wouldn’t wake up like this.”

“I just slept a little longer. Thanks to that, my body is in great shape now.”

“…”

“Really. I feel like I could go out and run around right now.”

I had a feeling I could roughly guess the cause of such an extended sleep.

“Maybe it’s because I’m a fairy.”

I had asked this once before the trees.

-You’re still caught between human and fairy, right? Maybe because of the curse or because you grew up among humans too long, I’m not sure.

-Do I have fairy powers? Of course I do. But because of the curse, my body has become too weak, and the fairy powers are being used to protect me.

It seemed like this long sleep and recovery were also due to that.

“Madam…”

John’s eyes darkened slightly.

“No. It’s a relief that you’re in good condition.”

Somehow, John was holding back his words. I tilted my head and asked.

“Do you have anything to say?”

“Not much.”

John nodded gently and smiled softly.

“But I don’t think I should ask everything now. You wouldn’t answer otherwise, right?”

“That’s… true.”

If I suddenly asked why I had slept so long, I wouldn’t have much to say.

“Tomorrow is the day of the masquerade ball we’re supposed to attend together.”

John, sitting up, let out a sigh and asked.

“Do you think you can go?”

“It’s already tomorrow, huh? I think I could go, no problem…”

My body was in good shape, but others might think differently. Logically, I’d probably be discouraged if I said I was going straight to the party.

“I’d like to stop you if I could, but if you want to go, you should.”

“It’s not like I can go without any preparations, is it?”

“I made sure everything’s ready just in case. So you can attend as soon as you wake up.”

John brushed my hair behind my ear and said:

“Aren’t you hungry?”

“I think I am.”

“I’ll tell the kitchen to prepare a meal right away.”

As I listened, a strange warmth stirred in my chest. It seemed that my long sleep had somehow affected my biological rhythms.

“Ah, then I’ll just be a moment.”

John immediately let go when I looked toward the bathroom. As I entered, I pressed a handkerchief to my mouth. Immediately, black blood poured out.

“Is this… proof of my curse?”

It seemed like my fairy powers were fighting fiercely. After spitting out the black blood, I felt much more refreshed. It was a truly invigorating sensation.

“Good thing I solved it without anyone noticing.”

I quickly washed my hands and disposed of the bloodstained handkerchief. John was already right in front of the door, his face serious and narrowed eyes.

“Madam. Did something happen?”

I gave a faint smile, worried that he might have sensed something.

“Something? No.”

“It’s just… the smell of blood.”

My body shivered. But I acted nonchalant, tilting my head.

“I’m not sure, honestly.”

He’s a master at sensing lies, especially since he’s not from the royal court.

“If I get caught, I have no way to explain.”

I smiled brightly, pretending I knew nothing. John scrutinized my face, hands, and clothes with a fierce look. Fortunately, I spat the blood into the handkerchief, so there were no bloodstains elsewhere. Even if he looked, he probably wouldn’t find anything suspicious.

“Sorry. I guess I was mistaken.”

John, after thoroughly inspecting me, seemed to find nothing unusual, so he relaxed his expression and patted my shoulder.

“Dinner’s ready. Let’s go eat.”

The situation was temporarily settled, but I worried he might pick up on something strange. So while eating, I slightly asked:

“If my condition worries you too much, I won’t attend the masquerade. I don’t want to push myself.”

There’s no particular reason I had to go to the ball in the first place.

“No. I want to attend the masquerade with you.”

“The duke?”

“Yes. I don’t know when I’ll get another chance.”

His eyes looked sad — or was it just my imagination? I pretended not to notice and asked casually.

“Why? You can go whenever you want. Won’t you refuse to attend the masquerade with me from now on?”

“…No. I just said something strange again.”

But it seemed John misunderstood my condition again.

“There are many strange things even without blood.”

That night, the day of the masquerade arrived.
