Chapter 15
I Will Accept a Lifetime Contract (11)
âWas this also that witchâs doing?â
Lynette stared at her brother, Eclipse. She didnât know why the witch had put him to sleep and then run away, but either way, she was grateful.
Normally, Eclipse forced himself to stay awake through endless nights of work. He rarely slept more than three hours a day.
âAt least now heâs sleeping properly, even if it took something like thisâŠâ
The person she thought was an assassin had ended up leaving behind a small gift instead.
Her feelings were complicated.
âAm I supposed to be thankful for this, or not?â
She sighed, full of mixed emotions, and looked at the wide-open window.
âEither way, I still need to catch that witch.â
Clicking her tongue, Lynette turned around and headed out. The early morning chill seeped through her cloak, making her shiver as she reached the mansion gates.
Just then, two armed guards stepped in front of her.
âSaintess, where are you going at this hour?â
âItâs late, please return to your room.â
She didnât have time to argue. Her target was a witch who could fly on a broom. If she wasted even a moment, she might lose her forever.
âThey wonât let me pass without a reasonâŠâ
After thinking quickly, Lynette stamped her feet in fake panic.
âPlease help me. I think Iâve lost a holy relic.â
âWhat? A relic?!â
âWhere did you lose it, Saintess?â
The guards were shocked. Lynette bit her nails, pretending to be anxious.
âTwo days ago, I sneaked out of the mansion⊠maybe I lost it then.â
âWhat?! Two days ago?â
The guards exchanged worried looks.
âIf my brother finds out, weâre all finished. Me, you, everyone. You understand, right?â
ââŠâŠâ
âSo open the gate right now. I have to find it before itâs too late. Please.â
âB-butâŠâ
Perfect. She could see them wavering.
âIf you help me, we can all pretend none of this ever happened.â
ââŠâŠ!â
Their eyes went wide.
âYes, thatâs right. If you help me find the relic, then my sneaking outâand the fact you failed to stop meâwill all disappear.â
Lynette gave them one last push.
âYou know how strict the Archduke is. Do you really want him to find out his gatekeepers failed their duty?â
The guards paled, hesitating nervously. Lynette stared at their lips, waiting for the answer.
Good. Just a little longer. Three, two, oneâ
ââŠWeâll⊠follow you, Saintess!â
âWhat was that?â
âWeâll accompany you! Please lead the way!â
Finally! Lynetteâs anxious expression lit up in triumph.
âThereâs no time. We have to find it before sunrise. Hurry!â
âYes, maâam!â
Taking the nervous guards with her, Lynette ran through the dark streets.
When they reached a shadowy back alley, Lynette leaned against the wall, out of breath.
âWas this where you lost it, Saintess?â
She nodded vaguely, her chest heaving.
âThis wonât work. Thereâs no way I can catch her like this. I need a way to lure that witch back to meâŠâ
The guards busied themselves searching every corner. Lynette noticed some rags lying on the ground and smirked.
âPerfect. Iâll use those.â
She called out:
âWait. Your armor is way too obvious. Cover yourselves with those rags.â
âWhat? Our armor?â
Though confused, the guards obeyed, draping rags over themselves. It didnât hide them completely, but in the dark, it was enough.
âGood. Now we wonât stand out too much.â
Pulling her hood down low to cover her face, Lynette turned to the guards.
âListen carefully. From now on, youâre thugs who rule this alley.â
They blinked at her, baffled.
âAnd Iâm just an innocent passerby who ran into you. Now, pick a fight with me.â
âW-what?!â
âDonât call me Saintess. Youâre thugs now!â
They hesitated, looking deeply uncomfortable. Lynette rolled her eyes.
âFine. Iâll give you each a gold coin. Now hurry up and act!â
âYes, maâam!â
At the mention of gold, the guards straightened instantly.
Lynette began first, clutching her cloak and screaming:
âKyaaah! Help me, someone!â
One guard raised his voice awkwardly.
âUh⊠hand over your life and weâll spare your belongings?â
âIdiot, thatâs backwards!â
âJust say whatever! Wave your weapon around and try to sound scary!â
As they fumbled through their fake bandit actâ
âIs anyone there? Please, help! Someone!â
Lynette poured her heart into her acting. And thenâshe saw it. A faintly glowing figure approaching from afar.
âCould it be her?â
Her pulse raced. She cried even louder:
âPlease⊠someone, anyone, help me!â
Peeking past the âthugs,â she saw her. A small figure with pink hair.
âYes, itâs her!â
Lynette called out excitedly:
âAh, over there!â
The pink-haired witch flinched. She was small, half-hidden behind the large guards.
âPlease, help me! These men are threatening to kill me!â
Lynette thought her acting was pretty convincingâand it worked.
The witch was now caught in the scene.
The only problem was that the poor guards almost got hurt for real.
âRun away while you can!â
âHelp! Somebody save us!â
The two guards bolted down the alley. Lynette silently promised herself to repay them later.
âIâm so sorry⊠Iâll give you thirty gold coins each!â
But for now, the priority was clearâcatching the witch.
âWait, please! Could I know your name?â
ââŠMy name?â
âYes. You saved my life. I must repay you properly.â
Up close, the witch looked even smaller than Lynette had imagined. Her own tall height only made the contrast sharper.
ââŠElsie Bloomhire. The great witch of Wendelton 7th Street.â
The little witch smiled as she introduced herself.
And in that instant, Lynetteâs heart pounded.
In her mindâs eye, white doves flew into the sky, and a choir in pure white robes sang hymns.
âItâs her. Without a doubtâitâs her.â
The details could be sorted out later. Why Elsie had been in Eclipseâs office, what her intentions were⊠none of that mattered now.
What mattered was keeping her close.
âElsie Bloomhire of Wendelton 7th StreetâŠâ
Without realizing it, Lynette grabbed both of Elsieâs hands tightly.
With this girl, everything Lynette had seen in her revelation would come true.
âThank you, Elsie. I swear Iâll repay this debt.â
From that moment on, Elsie Bloomhire became Lynetteâs guiding light.
