Part 2 Chapter 56
âSeems Krista told her where I was,â Richard said.
âI see. So what did you talk about? Did you tell her, as Krista wanted, not to come home?â
âI was going toâŠâ
Richard narrowed his eyes as if recalling Bania, then let out a dry laugh.
ââŠBut she cried and begged to come back instead.â
âWhat?â
âI thought she was living fine, but she suddenly burst into tears. I donât know why. She wouldnât tell me, no matter how much I asked.â
ââŠâŠâ
Richard didnât know it, but Baniaâs tears were likely because of the arranged royal marriage.
Since it had been decided by the Crown Prince and Ryan without her say, it made sense sheâd feel that way.
But Edgar still couldnât figure out why it had to go that far.
âIs Bania herself the goal?â he thought.
If that were the case, they would have kept her under strict watch.
She never wouldâve been allowed to secretly visit her half-brother Richard.
So then, what was the marriage for
Ah.
Suddenly, Edgar realized his mistake.
He had been unconsciously taking Richardâs words as truth.
âIâve grown old⊠to make such a mistake.â
âShall I go bring her over?â Richard asked casually, tilting his head.
âYou had some reason for wanting the others back, right?â
Trueâthough now, with the Crown Prince blocking things with this marriage, that plan was ruined.
âI already have a way to contact Bania. If youâd like, I can meet her and talk.â
Edgar silently studied his sonâs face.
Maybe letting Richard approach Bania would reveal something he himself was missing.
But he couldnât.
So far, he hadnât caught even the smallest clue about what Richard was truly thinking.
He didnât know if Richard was a safe piece to moveâor a hidden traitor waiting to betray him.
If he sent him to Bania, would it be the right moveâor just hand over a chance for treachery?
He was trapped.
A perfect checkmate.
ââŠLeave it for now,â Edgar said, standing up.
âIâll think about it more.â
âAs you wish.â
Click.
The door closed behind Edgar.
Richard pulled a cigar from his pocket, lit it, and leaned back against the sofa.
âHeh.â
He looked at the door his father had gone through and smirked.
No matter who it is, even my father canât read me.
Am I Bassenberg or not? Even Iâve lived brainwashed, not knowing for sure myself.
***
Bania Valencia.
With a new surname, I had become both royalty and a wife. Day two.
Who wouldâve thought that just a week after entering the palace, Iâd already be signing marriage papers?
It was only because the Crown Prince, unexpectedly backed by the Emperor, seized the moment.
My romantic man even accepted a slap on the back from his father just to give me the title of Princess Consort.
Ah, but the ceremony itself couldnât be held yet.
Right now, we only had the legal paperwork done.
The Crown Prince insisted it had to be done quietly, so gossip wouldnât spread.
So for now, I was still free⊠packing my things.
Because I had to leave the guest room.
âAre you happy?â Ryan asked, annoyed at my cheerful humming.
âOf course.â
âWhy not just stay here?â
âExcuse me! Iâm the Princess Consort now. I canât keep borrowing a guest room, Count!â
âOh really?â
âIt was His Majestyâs command to move. Iâm only obeying.â
Nike, being high-ranking, had his own palace villa inside the Imperial Palace.
Which meantâthere would be a room for me, a room for him⊠and a shared bedroom.
âHey.â
Ryan swallowed nervously, grabbing my arm as I packed.
âPromise meâdonât⊠do anything improper before the wedding.â
âWhat improper things?â
âYou shouldâve seen your face just nowâso sly! I didnât even say anything, but your thoughts were written all over it.â
ââŠâŠâ
âRemember the chaos from just one bad case of morning sickness? Donât you dare cause a scene again! The wedding must not have three people walking in.â
âWhat! What do you take me for? Your mind is filthier than mine!â
âNo! Iâm just being realistic!â
âArgh!â
I lunged at him, and he ran, shouting:
âOh right! Iâm going home tonight!â
ââŠWhat?â
âIâll show His Majesty and the Crown Prince Reevanâs secret weapon storage at the Academy, then head straight to Belzer.â
That secret storage contained the anti-monster weaponsâthe same ones that had wiped out Bassenbergâs troops before the rewind.
âIâll announce to our people that my daughter is married now. Then Iâll come back quickly. The western expedition is in the third week of June.â
He counted on his fingers, then swallowed nervously.
ââŠAnd after the northern expedition in July, itâs all over.â
Which meantâthe blade was sharpened.
Theyâd be ready to strike his fatherâs neck.
âOf course, before thatâŠâ
Ryan grinned and pulled a sheet of paper from his pocket.
âHahaha! Guess what this is?â
Of courseâit was a townhouse listing in the capital.
Royal marriage contracts included countless benefits for the brideâs family.
One of them was a luxury residence in the capital.
Ryan, whoâd been dreaming of a house there, now got it for free.
âWhich should I pick? The priciest street? No, maybe a huge one on the outskirts? Or a brand-new one?â
His greedy eyes glittered.
âYouâre just like your father. Blood doesnât lie.â
âWhat?!â
Ryan exploded.
âTake that back immediately!â
***
Late May.
The gates of the Princeâs Palace opened on the east side of the Imperial Palace.
Only three days had passed since the Emperor stamped the marriage papers.
This palace had been built four years ago by the Crown Prince as a gift to Nike at his coming-of-age.
Normally, royals who marry receive a title, land, and leave the palace.
But here, a special palace had been prepared for Nike to always have a home in the capital.
An unprecedented gesture of trust.
Which meantânow the palace had opened, for the first time since it was built.
And inside⊠a woman had entered before the official wedding.
âReally?!â
âItâs true. Didnât you pass it on the way? The gates were open and servants were everywhere.â
In the training grounds, knights gathered for the June western campaign were abuzz.
âWhy so shocked? Havenât you heard? The Crown Princeâs been busy meeting nobles about the marriage.â
âThatâs not the point! Why open the palace before the ceremony?â
âMaybe the paperworkâs already done?â
âDoes that make sense? No royal marriage is done like this.â
They all agreed.
âA royal wedding isnât a joke. It takes months of announcements, audiences, balls, pilgrimages, the full ceremonyâŠâ
âBut talking here wonât solve anything. If youâre curious, ask him directly. Heâs coming.â
But one knight suddenly shouted:
âNo! Donât! You really donât understand why it was done quietly?â
ââŠWhy?â
âThey mustâve rushed because thereâs only one reason a marriage gets fast-tracked like that!â
Gasps spread.
That knight, Emil Dietrich, had married six months ago.
Not by plan, but because his loverâs belly had started to show.
The othersâWolf, Torben, Oliverâgaped.
It sounded absurd. But also, thinking about it⊠what other reason could there be for such a secretive marriage?
At that momentâ
âThere he is. Stop talking nonsense.â
The Third Prince, Imperial Captain of the Knights, Nike Valencia, approached with his aide.
âWelcome, Commander!â
âVictory! Glory to the Empire!â
The knights saluted as always.
âGood morning. Today is the western expedition briefingâŠâ
But then Nikeâs voice faltered.
Something was⊠off.
Glancing rightâhis officers avoided his gaze.
Glancing leftâsame thing.
âWhat is this?â
His instincts, honed from countless misunderstandings before, flared in warning.
âHaa⊠this feels bad.â
Nike swallowed a sigh.
