Part 2 Chapter 53
āā¦What did you mean by that just now?ā
The Emperor asked Ryan.
Ryan, flustered, only moved his lips without speaking.
Baniaās face turned pale.
And inside Nikeās head, everything went blank.
āWhy would Ryan suddenly say something like that?ā
Nike couldnāt understand.
But since Ryan said it and then asked to rewind time, it didnāt seem like he meant to.
āRyan.ā
The Emperor pressed him again.
Ryanās shaky eyes stayed only on Nike, confused why he wasnāt stopping time right away.
Finally, Ryan stammered out,
āY-you should close your eyes quickly.ā
At those words, the Emperor slowly turned his gaze toward Nike.
Anyway, once time rewound, the Emperor wouldnāt remember any of this.
But Nikeās hesitation came from something else.
The Crown Prince had asked him:
āWhat do you think about telling His Majesty about what happened before the rewind?ā
The plan had originally been to drag Duke Bassenberg to trial, prove every crime, and then get a death sentence.
But if the Emperor used his direct execution power, all that could be skipped.
Why?
āDo you understand? Itās for Baniaās sake.ā
The Crown Princeās reason was to keep Bania safe.
Nike slowly turned to look at his loverās face.
Yes.
For you, I betrayed even my country.
So telling that truth for you againāwhatās so hard about that?
āFather.ā
Nike, having decided, looked back at the Emperor.
But the moment he saw his fatherās face, last nightās conversation came to mind.
āā¦I donāt want you to suffer anymore. If youāll let me, I want to try being a father before I die.ā
The first night they had ever slept side by side.
A father who regretted the past for so long.
Apology. Understanding.
A moment when they truly connected.
But nowāhow would that fragile closeness change if Nike revealed the truth?
āDamn itā¦ā
Sweat formed on Nikeās forehead.
āItās for Bania.ā
āI want to be your father.ā
āItās for Bania.ā
āI want to be your father.ā
āFather!ā
Nike forced his dizzy head to focus and said:
āPlease⦠give me a little time to prepare myself.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
āAn hour⦠no, even just 30 minutes.ā
The Emperor blinked slowly at his son, then nodded and lifted his fork again.
āā¦Fine. Letās eat first, then.ā
***
In Nikeās room.
I was facing Ryan.
āWhy did you suddenly say that out of nowhere!ā
āWhat do you mean out of nowhere? His Majesty said such nice things, so I wanted to show my determination too!ā
āEven so, why would you say something so important without talking to us first?ā
āI thought we already agreed! I asked you before if I could tell His Majesty about my powers!ā
āWhen did youā? And just because you ask, do we have to agree?!ā
āI knew it might be difficult! But when His Majesty listened, I thought he had agreed! Otherwise, why did you suddenly tell him youāre a time re-winder?ā
āā¦ā¦ā
I froze.
āAnd why bring up Bania?!ā
Ryan turned to Nike, who sat with his head down, showing only the top of his head.
āDad!ā
I quickly stopped Ryan.
āā¦Thinking about it, it was easy to misunderstand. Anyway, we donāt have time to fight. Whatās done is doneāletās just handle it.ā
āThereās nothing to handle.ā
Nike stood.
āI already decided before. I just needed a little time to prepare my heart.ā
āAre you crazy?!ā
I grabbed his arm.
āSome things should never be said! Heās your father, yes, but heās also the Emperor! If you tell him what happened before the rewind, heāll be disappointed in you! Why do this?ā
Nike had once revived all of Bassenberg for me.
I was thankful. Without him, Ryan wouldāve killed me already.
But to others, that was nothing but a betrayal of his country.
āI told you. Itās for you.ā
Looking down at me, Nikeās voice was firm.
Yes, once againāfor me.
He really was a romantic man.
āā¦It does benefit us to skip the trial.ā
Ryan, butting in, put his hand on Nikeās shoulder, his eyes gleaming with ambition.
āā¦If His Majesty just closes his eyes and gives the order, then everything ends happily, right?ā
āDad! Thatās not something you should say now!ā
***
Duke Bassenbergās mansion.
Hearing the report, Edgar laughed.
āWhat? Hahaha!ā
The Crown Prince and his wife were meeting noble families every day.
To push for the Third Princeās marriage.
And the partner? Bania Belzer. His daughter.
āThe Crown Prince must be insane. Why would he go this far just for Ryan?ā
Of course, Edgarās plansāto reel Bania and Alexander into his house through Kristaāwere no secret to the Crown Prince.
The Crown Prince probably even guessed Edgar planned to use them to steal Ryan away.
But?
Using the Third Princeās marriage, the most powerful card of the Imperial family, just to protect Ryan?
āThat makes no sense.ā
If Edgar were Crown Prince, heād have used that card for political gain, not wasted it here.
āā¦Did I miss something?ā
Edgarās eyes narrowed sharply.
***
Back with Nike.
Yesāhis father wouldnāt just take their marriage at face value.
He would ask, āWhy would my son suddenly marry a banished bastard like her?ā
That suspicion could spread to: āDoes she have some hidden power?ā
And eventually: āKeep an eye on her.ā
If they went to trial, those suspicions would only grow worse.
So the Crown Princeās ideaāto end it quickly with the Emperorās direct execution powerāmade sense.
āSo really, rushing the marriage was our mistake.ā
But it was the only way to stop her father from dragging her back.
āBania.ā
Nikeās voice trembled.
āGive me some courage.ā
āOf course!ā
I hugged him tightly.
We held each other, the two traitors who had sold out the empire, trying to comfort ourselves.
Ryan smirked, cutting in:
āWant me to give you some tips on how to make His Majesty less angry when you confess?ā
āā¦.ā
Nike listened eagerly.
Ryan leaned close and whispered slyly.
Later, before the Emperor.
āI will destroy Bassenberg and finally ease Fatherās long-time worries.ā
The Emperorās eyes widened.
Ryanās whispered tips echoed:
āOpen strong! Make his heart race, overwhelm him before he can question you!ā
āPlease grant me direct execution powers so I may remove them.ā
The Emperorās throat bobbed.
āRyan is no useless man. He has a death-ability.ā
The Emperorās jaw dropped.
āAnd this time, weāll succeed together. I promise.ā
Bang!
Nike slammed both hands down on the desk with force.
āI will bring you Edgar Bassenbergās head!ā
The Emperorās blue eyes shook violently.
āā¦W-what are you saying? Suddenly⦠how can I believe thisā¦?ā
āPlease trust me. It already worked once before. I was there. Ryan defeated all of Bassenbergās power-users.ā
The Emperor stared at his son in silence.
If it had already worked onceā¦
And remembering Ryanās earlier words at dinnerāāWeāll try again this time.ā
He began to piece it together.
His son⦠could rewind time.
Finally, the Emperor swallowed hard and asked:
āā¦If it worked, then why did you rewind?ā
Nike stepped back, voice heavy.
āTo save my lover. I had no other choice. Iām sorry.ā
āWhat?ā
āItās the same person. Now she is Bania Belzer. Before the rewind, she was Bania Bassenberg.ā
The Emperor frowned deeply, thinking hard.
He replayed everything in his mind.
Nikeās heart pounded.
He had never been this nervous in his life.
And thenā
The Emperor, face pale, pointed a trembling finger at his son.
āYou⦠y-you⦠youā¦.ā
Nike shut his eyes tight, unable to face him. Like a child waiting to be scolded.
