Chapter 10…
Once again, I got into a taxi with the nighttime surcharge.
âI should really get my own car or something.â
I really needed to start earning money soon.
After going home, that thought only solidified.
âI donât expect to become filthy rich, but at least I should earn enough to let Mom live comfortably for the rest of her life.â
There were many ways to do thatâ
and maybe this time, Iâd finally get the chance.
Screechâ
The speeding taxi stopped at the address that Seo Gyeoul had sent me.
The place was cordoned off with fences, guarded by soldiers and police.
âLooks worse than I expectedâŠâ
Judging by the tense atmosphere, the situation clearly wasnât good.
I walked up to the gate and identified myself.
Moments later, Seo Gyeoul came out to meet me personally.
âIâm sorry for calling you out as soon as you got home.â
âYeah, tell me about it. I was having a nice dinner with my mother for the first time in ages when you dragged me out. Felt terrible about it.â
âI apologize. Iâll make sure to repay you for this.â
Ever since the Player Test, Seo Gyeoulâs demeanor seemed a little differentâ
a little more polite, maybe.
Not that anyone else would notice; to others, sheâd still look like a cold, emotionless doll.
âWell, thatâs just how she is.â
I looked at her blank expression and replied casually,
âForget about the favor. So does this make us even for you sneaking me out last time?â
â…Ah. I suppose it does.â
We chatted as we walked toward the temporary command postâno time to waste on something this urgent.
âBy the way, I havenât even had time to form a guild since the test. Am I even allowed to take on assignments right now?â
I remembered her saying that Iâd need to create a guild before I could officially take jobs, even though Iâd passed the test with an A+ rating.
Her reply surprised me.
âThatâs why I went ahead and made one for you.â
â…Huh? You made my guild?â
âYou were only going to use it for this case anyway, right? I remember you asking if that was really necessary.â
âWell, youâre not wrongâŠâ
It was true. I never planned to actually run a guildâit was just a means to an end.
After thinking about it rationally, her actions made sense.
âActually, that saves me a lot of hassle. If Iâd done it myself, Iâd be running all over government offices getting a thousand documents signed⊠yeah, no thanks.â
I shook my head, grateful in spite of myself.
Then I remembered something important.
âWait, whatâs the guild name?â
ââMonster Guild.â I named it after your class, Tamer.â
…Not bad.
Considering my nicknameââBeast Tamerââit was actually a perfect fit.
Maybe this woman wasnât so bad after all.
With that settled, it was time to talk about the current situation.
âSo, how bad is it?â
âBad.â
â…â
Yeah, never mind. Forget the nice impression I just had.
âDidnât you already know? You said it yourself beforeâour manpowerâs stretched thin, and the workload keeps piling up.â
âWaitââ
I opened my mouth, but she kept talking.
âEveryone else is dispatched to other urgent missions. Thatâs why we called you. The higher-ups fully trust Player Rank 1, Kang Siwoo.â
â…Wow. Iâm just so honored.â
So my guess was right.
The people suppressing news about me were the ones sitting at the top of the hierarchyâ
the same people whoâd be powerless old men once the system collapsed.
But for now, their authority still meant something.
âFine. Iâll use them while I canâand dump them when the time comes.â
Because when the world turns upside down, those same people would be nothing but parasites getting in the way.
Still, Seo Gyeoul wasnât one of themâshe was competent and reliable, even if cold.
She spoke solemnly, as if unveiling something significant.
âWeâre not heartless enough to dump everything on you alone, Mr. Kang.â
â…Of course you arenât.â
Right as I finished, we arrived at the command postâ
a few shipping containers joined together into a makeshift building.
Two sentries stood guard at the entrance.
One of them, apparently the senior, recognized Seo Gyeoul.
âThe person you mentioned has already arrived.â
Seo nodded and opened the door.
Inside was an elderly man waiting at the desk.
âMaking an old man waitâis that any way to treat your elders?â
A wiry old man with white hair and beard sat upright, exuding quiet authority.
His presence alone made it clear he wasnât someone to underestimate.
â…â
I knew that face.
Among the three clans that made up the Goblin Guild, the most aggressive of them allâ
âMa GeonwooâŠâ
âI donât recall being your friend, boy. Watch your tongue.â
Even in his old age, his sharp eyes burned with energy.
â…My apologies, Clan Master.â
âHmph. At least you know your manners.â
Clan Master Ma Geonwoo of the Yacha (Night Demon) Clan.
âBut why the hell is he here instead of climbing the Tower?â
The Goblin Guildâs main force was supposed to be scaling the Tower, competing with Miyamoto Daichiâs faction.
If one of their three pillars was here, that meant theyâd paused their expeditionâ
and that meant the current incident was serious enough to warrant it.
âA terrorist attack that badâŠ?â
The Followersâthose cultistsâwere dangerous, sure.
But for Ma Geonwoo himself to show up?
That didnât add up.
I was still puzzling it over when he raised a white eyebrow and asked,
âYou the one?â
â…Sir?â
âThe one who beat up Joo Gunryul during the Player Test. That was you, right?â
Ah. Now I get it.
So thatâs why this old man came all the way here.
Great. Just great.
â…Yes, that was me.â
The old man suddenly burst out laughing and slapped my backâhard.
Whack! Whack! Whack!
âHahaha! Finally! Someoneâs avenged me in my old age!â
His strength was absurd; my insides rattled, and I swear I tasted blood.
After laughing his fill, Ma Geonwoo threw an arm around my shoulder.
âYou married yet?â
âNo, sir.â
âGood! Excellent! Hahaha!â
…Why was my being single such good news for him?
Wiping his eyes, he signed the papers on the table and handed them to Seo Gyeoul.
âAll right, Miss Bureaucrat, Iâll accept the contract.â
âTold you heâd like it,â she said calmly.
I looked between the two of them, bewildered.
âWait, what? What contract? What did you two decide without me?â
âA real man doesnât need explanations! Letâs move!â
Before I could protest, Ma Geonwoo grabbed my hand and dragged me outside.
His grip was so strong I couldnât even resistâ
not that Iâd have much chance against someone at least fifty levels above me.
â…â
As I was being hauled off, I glared back at Seo Gyeoul.
She just waved, expressionless.
âSeo Gyeoul! I swear Iâllââ
âCome now, hurry up!â
The world twisted like folded paperâ
and the next moment, we were somewhere else.
Weâd teleported straight to the Blue Gate siteâ
the one being used as a magic farm, now occupied by the Followers.
âDid this old man just use teleportation to drag me here?!â
I straightened my rumpled clothes and hair, silently staring at him.
âDonât mind me. Just do what you agreed to with that civil servant.â
Under my persistent glare, he finally confessed.
âTch, fine. I heard there was some rookie whoâd fulfilled my lifelong grudge, so I came to see him. The girl, meanwhile, wanted to make sure youâd be safe. So I told herâif youâre worth protecting, Iâll protect you.â
âWhat, so Iâm a kid who needs a babysitter now?â
I understood the logicâ
a new super rookie, someone who might represent Earth someday.
They wanted to keep me alive and nurture me into a veteran.
This mission was probably part of that plan.
But stillâ
âJust because I get it doesnât mean I have to like it. Who do they think theyâre controlling?â
Grinding my teeth, I drew my karambit.
Now that Iâd unlocked its hidden form, it glowed faintly with light.
[âCrimson Crescentâ Karambit]
Rank: Uncommon
Description: A pair of karambits made from the fangs of a demonic bat. Hidden power has been awakened.
-
Strength +8
-
Agility +10
-
Vitality +6
-
Magic +10
-
Skills: Echo (D), Vampirism (B)
âNice⊠good call taking that talent.â
Thanks to the Annihilating Body ability, my base stats mattered less now,
and getting a B-rank skill like Vampirism was a huge bonus.
It was all thanks to using Julie Pearsonâs talent from the Hall of Recordsâ
even if it had cost me a D-rank magic stone from the Blood Wolf boss.
âWorth it, though.â
The Followers occupying the Blue Gate were probably all Level 30 or higherâ
and at least ten of them.
I was only Level 17.
But stillâ
âScrew it. Letâs do this.â
The odds might matter, but they werenât absolute.
And if I pulled this off, Seo Gyeoul was definitely writing me a full apology report.
Sheâd asked me to deal with the Followersâ
not to âprotect the farm.â
So Iâd take them all down and clear the Gate while I was at it.
Without hesitation, I dashed straight into the rift.
