A grand table was lavishly filled with exquisite dishes. It was clear the chef had put extra effort into the meal for the master of the house who had returned after a long absence.
But Elice could hardly eat. Sitting face-to-face with her husband was overwhelming. The pressure was too much for her to swallow anything.
All the attendants seemed shocked that Lexius was dining with Elice. The maids bringing in the food glanced at her with visible confusion and unease.
âSo, where did you manage to find all those herbs?â
Calix, who had been chatting with Lexius the whole time, now directed his question at Elice.
In the heavy atmosphere weighing down the dining room, Calix was the only one managing to keep a conversation going. If it werenât for him, she wouldnât have been able to touch anything on her plate.
âI had the seeds. My mother passed them down to me.â
âThe Third Empress did?â
âYes. Most of them can’t grow in this empire. She said they were herbs native to her homeland.â
Calix looked genuinely skeptical at her answer.
âWhere in the world is her homeland…? Those herbs donât grow together naturally. Some come from cold regions, some from the desert.â
âThatâs why I built a greenhouse. I use magic stones to regulate the temperature and environment.â
âThatâs not what I mean. No matter where her homeland was, those plants could never have grown in the same place.â
âIs that so? You might be right. But she was very clearâshe said people from Tuleang always carry seeds with them. So they can sprout them anywhere, anytime. Every year, she hung a new pouch of seeds around my neck.â
âTuleang?â
âYes. Thatâs the name of her hometown. I donât know where it is, though.â
âMust be a small village or remote region. Even I, who have traveled across three continents, have never heard of such a place.â
Elice’s eyes lit up at that.
âYouâve traveled that much? Then is there any name that sounds remotely similar?â
âThere is a place called Toluhen. But itâs an arid desert where crops hardly grow.â
Hearing that, Elice looked disappointed. If even someone like Calix didnât know of Tuleang, finding it would be even more difficult.
Just then, her eyes met Lexiusâs.
He had been staring at her intently. And then, he spokeâcold and blunt.
âThat necklace is quite beautiful.â
His words were completely unexpected.
ââŠSorry?â
Elice blinked, stunned, looking at him in confusion.
âThe blue of the sapphire suits you.â
Unsure how to respond, she awkwardly explained,
âAh⊠Itâs a keepsake from my mother. Itâs not sapphireâitâs a gemstone called Heisia. It comes from her homeland.â
âYou look elegant today.â
His remarks were growing stranger by the second. Delivered with no expression at all, she didnât know how to take them.
âMe? Elegant?â
She didnât feel elegant in the least. Her stomach was in knots from the tension. She mightâve even gotten indigestion.
âYes. Beautiful. I wonder why I never noticed before.â
Gulp.
Startled, Elice accidentally swallowed her water the wrong way and began coughing. The tightness in her chest worsened.
âAh. I must have surprised you.â
Lexius handed her a napkin, and his large handâsharp and merciless, just like the rest of himâbrushed hers.
âThank you.â
Elice took the napkin and quickly looked away.
Was the dark magic truly affecting him? Never had she imagined this man would say such things.
If he ever truly began to desire herâŠ
That thought terrified her even more. She would be forced to spend the night with himâand who knew how many nights it would take until she bore a child?
âIâll excuse myself now.â
Elice wiped her lips gently with the napkin and spoke carefully. She needed to escape this suffocating scene.
âYouâve hardly eaten. Stay and have a bit more.â
âNo, Iâve had enough. Iâm not very hungry.â
Lexius furrowed his brow slightly. His already dangerous-looking expression grew more severe.
âIâll have the chef prepare something different tomorrow, then. Seems nothing suits your taste.â
âNo, thatâs not it. I just donât have much of an appetite today.â
When Elice quickly explained, he asked again, more seriously,
âIs your illness not fully healed?â
âPerhaps not.â
âIâll escort you to your room.â
Lexius stood up and walked toward her.
âNo, please continue eating. My roomâs not farâI can manageâŠâ
Elice tried to wave him off, but he wouldnât listen. She had no choice but to get up and head for her room.
He followed her in silence.
All the way up to the third floor, the air felt suffocating. Just knowing he was behind her made it feel like a stone weighed on her chest.
âRest well.â
Lexius opened the door for her, then turned to leave only after she sat down on the bed.
PhewâŠ
Only then did Elice exhale deeply. Without him around, she could finally breathe again.
She preferred the past three years when he had ignored her completely. At least then, there was no unbearable tension.
