Chapter 4 ā The Secret at the Villa
Serinielās emerald-green eyes reflected the colorful petals of the flower tea.
She knew this tea very well.
The tea Leraie had given her ā the one she said was good for the body and helped with fertility.
Seriniel had brewed and drunk it faithfully every single day, never missing a cup.
āIf Iād known it would take this long, Iād have poisoned every meal instead of just the tea.ā
That must have been around this time ā when Leraie first sent her the gift.
Yes, it had probably been difficult to obtain. It must have been something special ā after all, not a single doctor had ever discovered the cause of Serinielās illness. Even when she couldnāt stand or move anymore, they couldnāt explain what was happening.
So whatever poison had been hidden in that tea, it left no trace. That alone said a lot about how hard Leraie must have worked to find it.
āPlease wait just a moment, milady! Iāll go bring hot water for the tea!ā
Kina smiled brightly, unaware of the truth. But Seriniel suddenly grabbed her sleeve.
āYou donāt need to prepare that, Kina.ā
āOh, then perhaps after breakfast, milady? Itās not good to drink tea on an empty stomachāā
āNo. Thatās not why.ā
Seriniel shook her head firmly.
āIām never drinking that tea again.ā
āBut⦠Lady Leraie sent it herself as a giftā¦ā
Kina looked confused ā and Seriniel couldnāt blame her. For years, Seriniel had cherished Leraie deeply, and everyone thought the feeling was mutual.
At least, thatās what it had looked like.
But not anymore.
āInstead, I need you to do something for me.ā
Her voice dropped low.
āTake this tea to the market, Kina.ā
āTo the market? Why?ā
āDo you remember that old merchant ā the one who was close to my father?ā
āYesā¦ā
āGive this tea to him. Ask him to analyze it and tell us whatās in it.ā
That man ran an apothecary ā his family had been in the trade for generations, well-connected with noble families like the Berdellets.
If anyone could uncover the teaās true ingredients, it was him.
āTell him I sent you. Heāll keep it secret. And the sooner he gives us the results, the better. Iād like to know by tonight.ā
Serinielās mind was filled with the memory of that awful night ā the voices sheād heard before dying, the excruciating pain coursing through her body.
She wasnāt doubting herself.
She simply needed proof.
āMiladyā¦ā
Kina looked shaken. She had never seen Seriniel like this before.
Seriniel, who had always trusted Calian and Leraie completely ā loved them so much she would have died for them.
And now she was doubting them? Just like that?
āItās alright, Kina. Thereās nothing to worry about.ā
āI⦠I suppose so. I just hope youāre truly alrightā¦ā
Kina rambled nervously, and Seriniel gave her a reassuring nod.
Then she added quietlyā
āAnd Kina ā donāt touch the petals with your bare hands.ā
āWhat?ā
āJust⦠better safe than sorry. Oh, and Calian ā when will he be home?ā
āHe said heād be visiting the mines today.ā
Of course. Around this time, Calian had been extremely busy ā always away from home. Heād claimed it was because the mining operation had just begun, and he had a lot to manage.
Thatās what heād said, at least.
āBut he should be back tonight. Maybe late, though.ā
He rarely came home before dark anyway.
Which meantā¦
Seriniel thought for a moment, then stood up from the bed.
āKina, call the coachman.ā
āRight now? If you want to go to the mines, I can send someone aheadāā
āNo. I have other business.ā
Her tone was calm but firm.
āFind a coachman you can trust ā someone who wonāt talk, no matter what. Iāll pay whatever it costs. Do you understand?ā
āMiladyā¦ā
āAnd no one must know I went out today. Not even Calian. Only you.ā
Kinaās eyes widened in fear. She didnāt fully understand what was happening, but she could tell something was wrong.
Still, she nodded quickly.
āIs there anything else I can do?ā
Seriniel smiled faintly.
Kina had been by her side since childhood ā through her time at the countās estate and now, as the wife of a baron. Seriniel trusted her completely.
But even Kina couldnāt be told everything. Not yet.
āItās fine, Kina. Just get the carriage ready. Iāll be back by evening ā donāt worry about me.ā
***
Kina worked fast. Within minutes, the carriage was ready. She even asked again if Seriniel wanted company, but Seriniel refused gently and climbed in alone.
āā¦ā
The carriage rattled along the cobblestone road. Seriniel sat in silence, staring out the window, her expression grim.
She took a deep breath ā then another. Her hands fidgeted in her lap.
Why?
Why had she come back?
Was it divine mercy? A curse? Some cruel trick of fate?
No matter how she thought about it, there was no answer.
But she remembered her own voice from the darknessā
I wonāt go like this. Never.
Iāll take revenge. Iāll make them suffer like I did.
That blood-stained vow still echoed in her ears.
She didnāt know how or why sheād returned, but one thing was clear:
She would not repeat the same mistakes.
That was the reason she was here now ā riding through town in secret. She needed to confirm what was true and what was lies. To see how far their betrayal went.
āWeāve arrived, milady,ā the coachman said after a long ride.
Seriniel steadied her breath and stepped down from the carriage.
āWait here,ā she instructed. āIāll return soon.ā
āYes, milady.ā
Seriniel walked toward the quiet villa that stood before her.
It was Calian Helkarās private retreat ā a mansion far from their main estate.
Heād bought it shortly after starting the mining business. At the time, the investment had puzzled Seriniel.
When sheād asked about it, Calian had smiled gently.
āI just wanted a quiet place for us ā to make new memories together. Youāll get lonely staying at the main house all the time.ā
She had believed him then.
But after that day, sheād never visited the villa again.
He was always too ābusy.ā And soon after, sheād fallen ill.
āIāll send someone to the villa right away. Weāll bring the nanny and Benny. Heāll celebrate his seventh birthday here.ā
Those words ā his voice from the night she died ā echoed painfully in her mind.
Maybe he hadnāt bought this villa for her at all.
Maybe there had been another reason ā one he never intended her to know.
Clenching her fists, Seriniel drew a deep breath.
She had to see for herself.
She moved closer, careful to stay hidden among the trees.
No one could know she was here. If Calian found out, heād realize she knew everything.
Fortunately, the villa was sparsely staffed ā just a butler and a few maids. She could observe from outside without being seen.
And Calian was supposedly at the mines, so she didnāt expect him here.
She only wanted to take a quick look and leave.
That was the plan.
Untilā
āDaddy! Daddy!ā
A childās voice echoed across the garden.
And thenā
āYes, my boy.ā
Her husbandās voice answered.
Calianās voice.
The same gentle tone heād once used with her.
