Chapter 2
Eile knew she wasnât exactly a kindhearted person.
If she were, she wouldâve quit being an assassin long ago.
âBut really⊠ganging up on one person is pretty low, isnât it? And if they keep making noise like that, monsters will show up.â
If that happened, the whole area would turn into chaos with hunters and prey running everywhere.
âAnd then the corpsesâmonsters or humansâwill rot and stink.â
Which meant it would be a pain for her to pass through this place later.
âYeah, this isnât for that poor pretty boy. Itâs for me.â
With that excuse, Eile pulled her black hood low over her face and jumped down without hesitation.
The quiet forest shook with the sound of her light landing.
âHey, sickly little lord, move aside. Iâll save you.â
ââŠWho are you?â
The boyâs sharp eyes narrowed as Eile strode forward. Noticing his suspicion, she spread her arms wide and flapped them like wings.
Flap flap.
âCanât you tell? Iâm an angel.â
Up close, the boy looked terribleâcovered in blood, like he could drop dead any moment.
âNo need.â
But instead of being grateful, the fragile young master rejected her âangelicâ help.
Eile snorted.
âWhat nonsense? Youâre drenched in blood.â
She shoved him behind her and stepped forward.
ââŠItâs not my blood.â
But Eile didnât hear his mutter.
âShameless, really!â
She pointed at the group of rough-looking assassins.
âPicking on one kid, you trash!â
The assassins gawked at her, confused.
âWhat the hell? You think weâre bullying him?â
âLook at usâweâre the ones getting beat up here!â
âI wanna go home to MomâŠâ
Admittedly, their clothes were torn and they were bleeding a lot. Had they all rolled down a cliff or something?
âTsk, careless idiots. Still, trying to rob this kid? Arenât you ashamed?â
Silence fell. Everyone thought the same thing: Youâre a kid too. Who are you calling a kid?
âW-Well, maybe⊠but the situation has turned aroundââ
âWait. That black rose crestâŠ! Black Rose!â
âWhat?! No wayâwhy would Black Rose show up here?!â
âRun!â
The moment they recognized the crest embroidered on her cloak, the assassins panicked and tried to flee.
âWhere do you think youâre going?â
In a flash, Eile chased them down, knocking them out one by one.
âUgh!â
âArghâ!â
Before they could fight back, they collapsed foaming at the mouth, sprawled across the dirt.
ââŠWhy help me? Youâre an assassin too.â
The boy, who had silently watched her elegant yet deadly moves, finally spoke.
Eile turned, annoyed.
âRich boy, you must not know the difference. I was born to do this. Donât lump me in with those idiots.â
Her pride bristled at the comparison.
The boyâs violet eyes glimmered faintly.
âThis place is dangerous. See that path? Go straight, turn left, run diagonally, then rightâyouâll find a village.â
It was the laziest set of directions ever.
When the boy didnât move, Eile assumed it was fear. She sighed.
âWhat goodâs all that money if youâre weak like this? Next time, hire some guards.â
ââŠWill we meet again?â
ââŠWhat?â
Eile blinked, stunned. She had expected a boring âthank you,â not that.
He knows Iâm an assassin, yet heâs asking to meet again? What a lunatic.
Someone once said: Never deal with crazies.
âWell⊠if we meet again, I wonât be an angel. So letâs not.â
She kicked the fallen assassins for good measure, then leapt back into the trees and vanished.
ââŠBlack Rose.â
Alone in the dark forest, the boy whispered.
Maybeâjust maybeâhe would meet that wild âangelâ again.
âDidnât I tell you to come straight back after your job? And now itâs already night.â
At Desâs sharp words, Eile rolled her eyes.
Outside, the night was so deep even the moonlight couldnât break through.
âYou brat!â
Stretch!
âOw! Ow, boss, that hurts!â
Des tugged hard at her cheeks, and Eile clutched her face, whining.
âItâs supposed to hurt! I said come straight back, but you wasted time âsaving soulsâ!â
âI was! A poor soul needed help!â
âYouâre no angel, girl!â
Des sighed. If he told anyone that this pouty silver-haired, blue-eyed beauty was a Black Rose assassin, no one would believe him.
That noble-like face was exactly why she was perfect for their next mission.
âHere, Eile. A new job. See for yourself.â
âHuh? Black rose seal? So it really is urgent.â
She blinked at the black rose mark stamped on the file Des handed over.
Des slapped his forehead.
The seal meant only one thing: a request directly from someone of high nobility.
Eile opened the file and scanned the targetâs profile.
âTarget: Lys Cassio. Age fifteen⊠Huh? Cassio?â
Could it be that Cassioâthe infamous monster dukeâs family?
ââŠNo way.â
But when she looked up, Des nodded gravely.
âKilling Lys Cassio is your mission. And uncovering the secret of his power.â
ââŠBoss, youâve gone insane.â
Everyone knew: the Cassio estate was a fortress.
Countless assassins had entered, and none returned alive.
âIâm not saying sneak in like the others. Youâll infiltrate as a maid.â
ââŠYou want me to be a maid? What if I get caught?â
âNo one notices maids. Itâs the safest way.â
Des patted her shoulder encouragingly.
But Eile looked anything but reassured.
âSure, Iâve been a little lax lately, but giving me this suicidal mission?!â
Her eyes burned with betrayal.
âIâm not doing itââ
Before she could finish, Des shoved something right in front of her face.
