Chapter 9
Chaeri bent her waist in a polite bow.
âI am sowwy.â
In the world of adults, proof didnât matter much.
It wasnât about who was right or wrongâ
only about who shouted louder, who had more power.
That was all that counted.
âIs that how you apologize?â
Seo-ahâs mother snapped, and Chaeri, like a little robot, bowed again.
âIâm sowwy. Sowwy, Seo-ah unni. I wonât do it again. Iâm weally, weally sowwy.â
Lee Ji-seok also chimed in.
âIâm sorry, Seo-ah. Iâll make sure Chaeri gets proper discipline.â
âHmph.â
Chaeriâs eyes trembled slightly.
She hadnât thought it would hurt this much.
Her head knew all of this already.
If you expect things, you get hurt.
She wasnât their real daughter.
No one would ever take her side.
Even soâ
âIf only someone⊠had just asked me once what really happened.â
But no one here would ever do that.
âIf I endure it, everyone else stays comfortable.â
It was familiar. Sheâd always been on her own anyway.
âItâs better if Iâm the only one whoâs upset. Then everyone else can move on.â
That was the most convenient endingâfor Ji-seok, for the kindergarten, for Seo-ahâs family.
âLifeâs a solo game anyway.â
Except⊠it wasnât.
There was one person.
âItâs not true! Itâs really not true!â
A little girl clutching a pink magic wandâ
timid, stuttering Kang Se-hyun.
With fists clenched, eyes shut tight, she shouted,
âSeo-ah fell down all by herself! Chaeri tried to help her! I saw everything!â
In the end, Kang Se-hyun got scolded.
For being rude.
For daring to interrupt adults.
And, of course, no one ever suggested checking the CCTV footage.
Once things were âsettled,â Chaeri gently patted Se-hyunâs shoulder.
âStill, thanks, Kang Se-hyun oppa.â
âYou didnât do anything wrong.â
Funny how thatâjust thatâfelt comforting.
âIâm fine now.â
Sheâd been upset at first, but it was okay.
If you donât expect anything, you donât get disappointed.
It was a rational way to save emotional energy.
She tapped Se-hyunâs shoulder again.
âIf you get mad at evewything, you age fast.â
Chaeri didnât see it.
How Se-hyun, like a spell, was repeating in her head:
âLife is survival of the fittest. Life is survival of the fittest. Life is survival of the fittest.â
If she got strongerâ
maybe then she could protect Chaeri.
And Se-hyunâs thoughts began to deepen.
Chaeri, though she hid it well, wasnât really okay either.
That night, she told Davith everything.
âSo thatâs what happened. Chaeri, were you very upset?â
âYes. Supew duper upset.â
Late at night, drained both mentally and physicallyâ
but Davith was always, without question, on her side.
Her mouth loosened easily.
âDavith. Would you like to see the perfectly collected evidence on Chaeriâs kidsâ phone?â
âYes, please show me right away!â
She showed the video.
âSee? She just fell on her own.â
âYes. She clearly tripped by herself.â
Davith bit his lip tightly.
âIâm so angry right now. Whatâs your friendâs name again?â
âShin Seo-ah.â
âThat mustâve been so unfair for you, Chaeri.â
His sincere empathy made her feel a little better.
Picking Davith was really the best choice.
If it had been Medesa instead?
âThereâs no reason to let such evil live.â
That scene had existed in the original novel too.
But after that, the narration skipped ahead.
Seo-ahâs family was never mentioned again.
âA mysterious incident strikes a family in SeoulâŠâ
That was all the news said.
If the novel hadnât been rated PG,
it wouldâve been far worse.
Davith asked,
âThen why didnât you show them this evidence?â
ââCause if I just put up with it, everyoneâs happy.â
âBut Chaeri, youâre not happy.â
That was fine.
The less-troublesome adopted daughter role suited her best.
âIâm used to it.â
âChaeri, may I see the video once more?â
âYes.â
She was yawning, so she didnât noticeâ
Davithâs expression had turned as cold as Medesaâs.
âChaeri, shall we take the day off today?â
âYou pwomised, wemembew?â
Chaeri was firm.
âIâm going to the towerâs third floor.â
Davith tried to stop her but gave up.
Tonight, Chaeri needed that sense of accomplishmentâ
something to make her feel good before sleeping.
[Entering the Tower (Seoul) â 3F]
Fox monsters roamed about.
[Quest: Defeat the Red Foxes.]
[Clear after defeating 10.]
Nothing unusual about the third floor.
[Kids Safe Filter activated.]
Poof! Sparkle sparkle!
White butterflies fluttered like starlight.
[You have cleared the Tower (Seoul) â 3F.]
[Clear Rank: L (Legend)]
The foxes turned into butterflies and ascendedâwas that enlightenment?
[Your clear record has been added to the Towerâs 3F Hall of Fame.]
[Would you like to register a nickname?]
âNo, thank you.â
[Nickname not registered. Displaying as âââ.]
[Hall of Fame â 3F]
[Republic of Korea]
- â : Legend (Seoul)
- âŠ
It was Chaeriâs third L-rank clear.
[Level Up!]
[Level: 3]
Level-up reward: one card enhancement point.
[You received a âWell Doneâ sticker.]
[You earned 100,000,000 Diamonds.]
She had made another hundred million.
Without realizing, Chaeri muttered,
âMoney thewapy. Amazing.â
âChaeri, Iâll say it againâthe card enhancement pointâŠâ
He was going to tell her to save it.
To invest in continental- or world-class heroes, not him, a mere imperial-class aide.
But he couldnât bring himself to say it.
âIf my manifestation time increases by one more hour⊠I can stay by Chaeriâs side a bit longer.â
Chaeri needed someone by her side.
Her foster parents, her teachersânone were real guardians.
âYou did well today, Chaeri.â
âYou did well, Davith.â
10 p.m.
Sleep was tugging at her, but she didnât forget her nightly routine.
[Enhancing Davithâs Card.]
[Davith +3]
[Imperial Aide of a Fallen Empire +3]
Manifestation Time: 6 hours
Cooldown: 21 hours
Davith gently patted her head.
âThank you, Chaeri. Sleep well.â
âYes. See you tomowwow.â
Once she fell sound asleep, Davithâs face hardened.
âTime to do my job.â
Shin Seo-ahâthat was the name, wasnât it?
He remembered the face perfectly.
The next dayâ
Korea was shaken to its core.
[Seoul Tower cleared up to 3F with continuous L-Rank!]
[How far will this momentum go?!]
[Legendary Awakener still unidentified!]
[Seoul Guild launches all-out search!]
The entire nation was in uproar.
Other regional guilds jumped in, unable to sit still.
[Daegu Guild dispatches Vice Lord!]
[Busan Guild: âSeoulâs #1 belongs to Busan. Ready to recruit the L-Rank Awakener!â]
[Incheon Guild: âWe have unlimited funds ready.â]
â âLook at the guild masters losing their minds lolâ
â âLegend-chan is absolutely cracked lolâ
But amid all that hype, Chaeri was hit with another surprise.
Seo-ah apologized.
With a proper bow this time.
âIâm sorry, Chaeri. I was bad.â
Even her mother came.
âIâm so sorry, dear. I got angry without knowing the truth.â
âHuh?â
Their faces were pale, hands trembling, backs hunched.
Anyone could seeâthey were truly afraid.
âPlease⊠please forgive us.â
âYes. I forgive you.â
âReally? You mean it?â
âYes. I can say it twice.â
âT-then, just one more timeâ!â
âI forgive you.â
âTh-thank you⊠thank you so much⊠Seo-ah, apologize too!â
Color finally began returning to the womanâs face.
Her hands still shook.
âWhat on earth did Davith do?â
She had no way of knowing.
âWhatever. Iâm tired.â
The mental exhaustion from yesterday hadnât worn off.
âIâll just sit in my corner.â
That corner, as always, belonged to Kang Se-hyun.
As she approached, she overheard the teachers whispering.
âDid you hear?â
âA new sponsor appeared. The directorâs over the moon.â
A âTall Uncleâ had shown up, they saidâ
someone named Svida, who had just donated 100 million won.
Chaeri sipped her banana milk quietly in the corner.
A mysterious new figureâSvida.
That name hadnât existed in the original story at all.
âHmm⊠but Svida⊠sounds kind of familiar somehow?â
