Chapter 6
—
Even though I had already seen him earlier this morning, his beauty still hadnāt faded.
Standing with the sunset behind him, Kahen looked even more dazzling.
He slowly walked toward me.
Each step was calm yet not slow ā his long legs closed the distance in only a few strides.
āAs expected of the male leadā¦ā
Why was Kahen still here?
This place was far from the capital, so nobles rarely came ā there was nothing special here.
Could it be⦠he came hoping to accidentally meet Bella?
But unfortunately, Bella wasnāt in the capital right now.
Maybe my curiosity showed on my face, because Kahen suddenly looked awkward.
Bella once told me, āIf you want to act, you should wear a mask ā your face shows everything.ā
And she was right. If I could act, Iād probably be an actress by now.
My expression must have revealed my thoughts again, because Kahen looked slightly troubled.
Probably because weād agreed to a contract relationship as business partners, but now that we were face-to-face, it felt awkward.
There were people watching nearby, so I decided to play my part.
I could at least act friendly ā just like when I used to fangirl over him while reading the novel.
āLord Cherta, what brings you here? Did you come to see me?ā
āā¦ā
Kahen said nothing.
Suddenly, embarrassment flooded me so hard I seriously considered finding a hole to crawl into.
Ten seconds felt like ten years.
Then, he covered his mouth with his palm.
Was his hand that big, or was his face just small? Half of it disappeared behind his fingers.
āIs he⦠laughing at me?ā
He lowered his head now, still covering his mouth ā his face completely hidden by his hand and hair.
āHeās laughing. Heās totally laughingā¦ā
Ugh, I shouldāve just left out the āourā part!
Regret hit me like a wave.
Just as I was drowning in embarrassment, Kahen lifted his head again.
My cheeks were burning.
This would haunt me for a week ā total blanket-kicking material.
Kahen looked a bit flustered himself, his usual calm face stiff, but his reaction was small compared to mine.
Still, at least I wasnāt the only one embarrassed.
āT-thatāsā¦ā
He hesitated, which was unusual for him, and didnāt even look at me.
Perfect. Time to fix my blunder.
āItās okay. Take your time. Anyway, weāre in the same boat now, arenāt we?ā
āCome on, just say you wanted to see Bella. I wonāt tease you that much.ā
But even after I said that kindly, Kahen still hesitated.
What was going on?
I leaned closer, worried something mightāve happened.
He flinched a little but didnāt move away.
āAre you feeling unwell? Should I call someone?ā
āI got lost.ā
āā¦Sorry, what?ā
Maybe I was too young to be losing my hearing already.
Before I could ask again, he spoke firmly ā fast and sharp, as if all that hesitation earlier had been an act.
āI said, I got lost.ā
āā¦.ā
āDid he just⦠lose his way? What is he, a puppy?ā
Normally, I wouldnāt call a grown man a puppy, but this was Kahen.
In the original novel, he and VentiƔn had that cat-and-dog rivalry thing going on.
Come to think of it, VentiĆ”n had been acting weird today ā maybe heād seen lost Kahen wandering around.
So this was it ā the day I discovered the male leadās clumsy side.
I had to write this in my diary and keep it forever.
And when I was old, Iād hand it to my descendants and whisper, āYou know whatā¦? Kahen was terrible with directionsā¦ā before peacefully closing my eyes.
If I ever returned to my original world, I couldnāt exactly pass the diary down generations, but still ā Iād definitely message the author:
āAuthor-nimć
ć
ć
Kahen being bad with directions is too muchć
ć
ć
ā
Then Iād post on social media:
āGuys, did you know? The male lead in canāt find his wayć
ć
ć
ć
ć
ć
.ā
The world deserved to know about his adorable flaw!
Just imagining it made me forget all about my earlier embarrassment.
But when I turned to tease him, Kahen had an unreadable poker face again.
That threw me off balance instead.
āOkay, maybe teasing him isnāt a good ideaā¦ā
I cleared my throat. āAhem, then shall I call a carriage for you?ā
His familyās mansion in the capital was close by ā close for nobles, anyway ā but definitely not walking distance.
He needed a horse or a carriage.
Iād only ever ridden in carriages, so horses were⦠not my thing.
Bella once told me horseback riding was essential for nobles, so Iād tried it once and regretted it instantly.
With a good teacher and Bellaās encouragement, I got better over time, but horses and I never became friends.
They were huge ā nothing like the photos.
The first time I mounted one, my whole body trembled.
Even at a slow walk, I was terrified of falling off.
I knew all the theory but couldnāt apply any of it.
After months of lessons, my instructor reluctantly passed me, muttering, āIāve never seen someone tremble this much on a horse. I canāt tell if youāre riding the horse or the horse is riding youā¦ā
So yeah ā I never touched a horse again.
Thatās why I suggested a carriage, but Kahenās expression dimmed slightly.
āHis expressions are more varied than I thoughtā¦ā
Still, all he did was lower his eyebrows slightly, yet somehow, I could read everything from that tiny motion.
āUnfortunately,ā he said calmly, āto rent a carriage in the capital, Iād have to reveal my name. My family would be⦠ashamed if they knew.ā
He said that with a perfectly straight face.
Knowing the Cherta familyās reputation, I didnāt insist. Instead, I offered another idea.
āThen⦠what about borrowing a horse?ā
That seemed to cheer him up ā his eyebrows lifted again.
But then he gently grabbed my arm. It wasnāt tight, just enough to stop me from moving away.
If I pulled, heād easily let go ā but something about his grip felt desperate, like a man clinging to a lifeline.
āWould you ride with me?ā
āā¦Pardon?ā
āI canāt ride a horse.ā
āā¦.ā
Wait, what?
Bella definitely said horseback riding was essential for nobles.
Was she lying to me?
Or maybe Iād just remembered wrong.
Either way ā what was I supposed to do with this situation?
Where was his servant, Hasin?
In the novel, Hasin was Kahenās most loyal aide ā surely he knew his master was directionally challenged.
How could he just leave him stranded like this?
No matter how handsome Kahen looked right now, I couldnāt possibly agree.
āI have a license, but only for closets⦠not horses.ā
It had been three years since Iād learned to ride, and three years since Iād last touched a horse.
āIām not that good at riding eitherā¦ā
āIāll help you.ā
I tried to politely decline, but he cut me off quickly.
āYou just said you couldnāt ride.ā
āI can still guide the horse.ā
Sigh.
I couldnāt help but sigh out loud.
There was no other choice.
If I wanted to get this man safely back homeā¦
āFine. But renting a horse costs money, and I donāt have enough with me.ā
Kahen reached into his coat and pulled out a pouch.
He didnāt even open it all the way, yet the gold coins inside gleamed so brightly they nearly blinded me.
I muttered under my breath, āMaybe we should just bribe the rental worker with that insteadā¦ā
āYou joke as well, I see. But bribery is wrong.ā
āā¦Yes, sir.ā
āAnd since all carriages in the capital belong to the royal family, even a low-ranked noble would report such a bribe to gain favor. His Majesty already dislikes me enough as it is.ā
āā¦Yes, sir.ā
āIf thatās the case, itās better to secretly plant someone on our side instead.ā
āā¦Yes, sir.ā
Why was I getting lectured by the male lead?
And about something shady, no less!
But whatever ā we were in this together anyway.
āAlso,ā Kahen continued, āthe horse is already prepared.ā
āā¦What?ā
āYou said you canāt rideāthen why do you have a horse?ā
āHasin threw me a horse and told me to āfigure it outā.ā
So much for loyalty!
Leaving your noble master ā who canāt even ride ā alone like that? Thatās cold.
āThatās⦠unbelievably heartless,ā I muttered before realizing Iād said it aloud.
Thankfully, Kahen didnāt seem offended.
āIāll make sure he pays for it later,ā he said quietly.
I tilted my head. āSorry, what was that?ā
He smiled slightly ā one corner of his mouth curling up.
āDo you have a good idea?ā
I grinned wickedly. āCut his salary.ā
āA fine suggestion.ā
And just like that, somewhere far away, Hasinās paycheck began to shrink.
Goodbye, salary!
