Chapter 10
Yubellin couldnât hide the joy in her voice as she looked at Zervant, who still couldnât bring himself to answer.
âYouâre angry because I came too late, arenât you?â
ââŠâŠâ
âActually, I just got back from an engagement trip with Terrence. You couldnât come to the ceremony, remember?â
Zervantâs jaw tightened sharply. Only then did Yubellin realize her mistake and covered her lips, murmuring an apology.
âSorry, I didnât mean it that way.â
Without even trying to gauge his mood, she quickly changed the subject.
âAnyway, Iâve had such a rough time lately. Youâll listen, wonât you?â
Zervant said nothing, but Yubellin went on talking as if it didnât matter. He was always quiet like that, so there was no reason to stop.
She kept chatting lightly, as if she felt nothing at all seeing him trapped in this darkness.
âEven though Terrence and I went on an engagement trip, we didnât get to enjoy it much. Everywhere we went, people called him a hero. We ended up staying inside the mansion the whole time. Isnât it polite to pretend not to notice at least in those situations? People can be so inconsiderate, donât you think?â
Zervant lowered his head as she rambled on about whether she was bragging or complaining. All he could see between his lashes was the dark floor below himâcold and empty, like his own future.
âTerrence has been so busy. As soon as we came back, he went straight back to work. He told me to say hello to you since he hasnât had time to visit.â
Every word about their happy life together seemed to choke Zervant. He clenched his teeth to keep the sound of a groan from escaping.
An unbearable mix of self-loathing and jealousy burned in himâugly thoughts whispering, why them, and not me?
Was I always this pathetic?
Have I sunk this lowâblaming others whoâve done nothing wrong?
He felt wretched and ashamed of himself. The two of them were only worried for him, yet he was consumed with envy toward themâtoward their happiness, their freedom.
Seeing Yubellin looking so well, he felt both relieved and devastated. His self-esteem shattered completely at the sight of how much heâd changed.
The Yubellin who used to blush shyly and couldnât tear her eyes away from himâshe no longer existed.
And he could tell that the look in her eyes now carried a faint trace of pity, even contempt.
Damn it.
Pathetic bastard.
He clenched his fists tightly. Then, like snow melting in spring, a warm hand suddenly covered his.
Zervantâs head snapped up in surprise. Yubellin was smiling softly, her eyes curved like crescent moons.
âItâs okay, Zerv. Maybe one day the curse will lift. Until then, Iâll keep watching over you.â
ââŠâŠâ
That empty promiseâhope she didnât even believe herselfâonly made him hate her.
Even the Saintâs power couldnât lift this curse. It was said to be too strong, even for her.
âIâll keep watching over you,â huhâŠ?
She hadnât answered a single letter, hadnât shown her face onceâand now she says that?
Stop making promises youâll never keep.
The words hovered at his lips, but in the end, he swallowed them back down.
He despised himself for not being able to say a single word to her anymoreânot even to complain, or resent, or ask why.
Heâd been made that way. Especially after she once told himâ
âZerv, Iâm not your emotional trash bin.â
Ever since hearing that, the thought of speaking in front of herâor Terrenceâterrified him. The old him wouldâve argued back, maybe even walked away completely.
But since being trapped here, heâd shrunk into himself, timid and hollow.
Like an idiot.
âIf anythingâs hard for you, you can tell me. Anything at all.â
As if sheâd actually listen.
âAt the very least, I can listen.â
Even though she never really did.
He wanted to shut her mouthâto silence that cruelly kind tone that sounded so much like mockery.
And yet, Zervant couldnât bring himself to resent her fully. His broken pride wouldnât let him.
For two years, heâd grown weary and isolated, a hollow remnant of the man he once wasâutterly defeated, unable even to envy without shame.
âMy poor ZervâŠâ
Just when he wanted to block his ears to erase that sweet, cloying voiceâ
Knock, knock.
The door burst open, and something whooshed into the room.
The first thing Zervant saw were a pair of playful, sea-blue eyes gleaming with mischief.
Then came the bright red bicycle the owner was riding. Bold and brash amid the gloom, Titia pedaled straight into the room and made a full circle around it as if showing off.
Both Zervant and Yubellin froze in bewilderment, watching her.
After completing her proud lap, Titia stopped in front of Zervant and spoke with a slightly smug expression.
âThis room is ridiculously big and totally wasted. Do you know how unproductive it is to just sit here doing nothing? Even Mr. Veilt was worried youâd lose muscle mass! So I figured⊠maybe you could get some exerciseâby riding a bike indoors!â
But before she could finish her chatter, her eyes locked directly with the Saintâs.
Like someone burned, Titia flinched, quickly jumped off the bicycle, and bowed deeply.
âS-Saint Yubellin! I thought youâd gone back to the temple! Iâm so sorryâŠâ
The tense thread stretched between Yubellin and Zervant snapped in an instantâquietly, almost pitifully.
What the heck! You said the Saint had left!
That was why sheâd abandoned her dessert and wheeled the bicycle straight in.
Since the Boss had been holed up doing nothing but sulking, sheâd decided they could do something active together. Sheâd even prepared the bicycle with grand ambition.
But nowâsheâd barged in and interrupted the Saintâs visit. He was going to kill her for sure.
She could already imagine the bicycle wheels flying at her face.
Eek! I donât wanna die!
âYouâŠâ
Just as she was picturing her tragic future, his voice made her shoulders jump.
Seizing the chance, she began to explain herself franticallyâwith exaggerated gestures and the most innocent expression she could muster.
âItâs true, Boss! I really thought you were alone! Mr. Veilt said it was fine to come see you nowââ
âI never said the Saint had left,â Veilt replied coolly from behind.
Oh, so now heâs pretending innocence?
Titia shot him a sharp glare.
âYour tone implied it, Mr. Veilt.â
âVeilt never implies.â
Ugh. Stop being smug, itâs annoying.
Was he trying to get her fired now? That must be it. Thereâs no other reason heâd set her up like this.
But first, she needed to survive this moment.
With both hands politely clasped, she bowed with all the pitiful sincerity she could summon.
âIâm so sorry for interrupting you two. Iâll accept any punishment later. For now, Iâll just⊠step outsideâŠâ
She put one foot on the pedal to make a quick escapeâbut the bicycle wouldnât move.
When she turned around, Zervant was standing right behind her.
Whyâs he stopping me? Is he going to punish me right now?
âWhy, Boss? Are you mad at me? I swear I didnât mean to!â
He said nothing. His head was bowed.
âŠSomethingâs off.
Noticing the strange tension lingering between him and the Saint, she hesitatedâthen offered awkwardly,
âBoss, want to ride in the back? Iâm actually a really good cyclist.â
To her surprise, he climbed on without hesitation.
She hadnât meant it seriously, butâmaybe he was just trying to get away from the Saint?
Guess heâd rather escape than talk to her, huh.
Titia pedaled hard, and the bike began to roll forward.
âZerâ!â
Before the Saint could call out his name, Veilt smoothly cut in.
âSaint Yubellin, perhaps itâs time you returned? This is usually the Bossâs recreation hour with our delightful Miss Tea Time. They have such fun together.â
He looked positively thrilled that the Boss seemed to reject her presence.
ââŠâŠâ
âYou must be very busy as well, my lady. Your holy knights are anxiously waiting outside.â
Zervant deliberately avoided Yubellinâs gaze. Interpreting it as something positive, she smiled faintly.
âAlright. Iâll go. Take care, Zervâand you too, Miss Kind Tea Time.â
âItâs Miss Titia, actuallyâŠâ
âPlease be safe, Saint,â Veilt said smoothly. âI apologize that I couldnât greet you properly, as Iâm currently assisting the Boss.â
âOh, donât worry. If my friendâs mood lightens even a little, you can be as rude as you like. See you later, Zerv.â
Without a trace of regret, Yubellin left the room. Veilt shot Titia a smug thumbs-up before closing the door behind her.
Now, only the rhythmic sound of pedaling and Titiaâs heavy breathing filled the room.
Thenâsuddenlyâthe weight behind her disappeared. She heard a dull thud.
Turning around in alarm, she saw the Boss collapsed on the floor, face buried in his hands.
Titia jumped off the bike and rushed to him.
âB-Boss! Are you okay? Thatâs why I said you shouldâve held on tighter!â
â…Annoying.â
âHuh?â
âPathetic.â
âWell⊠thatâs fair. I am a bit annoying and pathetic sometimes.â
ââŠâŠâ
He lowered his hands and gave her a baffled look.
