Chapter 68: Healing Magic
ââŠIâm Enolius.â
Enolius?
I blinked blankly.
OhâEnolius, the mage from the Grand Dukeâs castle.
I didnât expect to meet him here, in this place, at this hour.
âIâm casting a healing spell, so donât move.â
But he was just sitting on a chairânot doing anything that looked magical.
He wasnât reaching his hand toward me, and I couldnât see any magic circles or light.
As if reading my thoughts, the mage narrowed his eyes.
âHealing magic is invisible by nature.â
The look he gave me, as if I were clueless, made me a little annoyed.
âYouâre casting magic on me without my permission?â
My voice was wary, but the mage replied indifferently.
âBy order of the Grand Duke. Iâm just following orders. If you have a complaint, take it up with him.â
What an irritating way of speaking.
I wanted to say something back, but technically, he wasnât wrong.
ââŠI wasnât trying to argue.â
I simply didnât have the energy to fight. But that seemed to amuse him.
âSo you’re different from what I expected.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI thought Her Highness would wake up and cause a scene. I even prepared a binding spell, just in case.â
He spoke casually, like he was talking to a stranger. His words were so rude, I let out a short, empty laugh.
âYouâre exactly like the rumors.â
So unpleasant.
âI wonât deny it. As you can see, Iâm the type whoâs disliked no matter where I go.â
The mage shrugged lazily.
If he werenât a mage, someone probably wouldâve chopped off his head already. Still, I didnât find his honesty all that offensive.
âI guess Iâm similar.â
I calmly touched my forehead.
There was something like a bandage where the egg had hit me.
âSimilar?â
âYouâve heard the rumors about me, havenât you?â
Starting with “Capitalâs Villainess,” then “enemyâs daughter,” and now probably âthe Grand Duchess who sucks the life out of the people.â
The mage frowned, then nodded like it made sense.
âI suppose thatâs fair.â
After that, the conversation stopped.
The mage stood up a short while later.
âItâs done. You should rest now.â
Without much else to say, he headed for the door.
Just as he was about to leave, I called out quietly,
ââŠThank you.â
It was barely loud enough to hear, but he stopped and turned back to look at me.
âFor what?â
âFor the healing magic.â
âOh⊠right, well.â
He hesitated a moment, then scratched his chin awkwardly.
âI didnât mean to be rude, by the way.â
That was unexpected.
âItâs fine.â
âAnd I donât think youâre like me.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âAt least within this castle, you donât seem to be hated.â
I gave him a puzzled look, and he gestured behind me.
I turned my head and saw flower potsâlarge and smallâlined up on the windowsill.
âTheseâŠâ
I turned back to ask, but the mage had already disappeared.
***
âYour Highness! Are you okay?!â
A while later, Cecilia rushed in, her eyes full of tears.
âYou donât know how scared I was! I thought you might never wake up!â
After calming her down, I finally heard what had happened after I fainted.
âThe court physician said there was no major injury aside from the scratch on your forehead. But you didnât wake up even after the evening passed.â
Cecilia sniffled, still looking shaken.
âWhen His Grace heard, he rushed to the castle. He was furious and immediately called for the mage.â
âThe Duke was angry?â
âI didnât see it myself, but Sir Perel and the other knights looked terrified. They said it was the first time theyâd seen His Grace that furious. Said the air felt deadly.â
I couldnât really imagine the calm and dignified Duke being that angry, but I nodded.
âWhat about the culprit?â
âThey caught the person who threw the second egg. Heâs in prison now and being interrogated.â
Cecilia added carefully,
âAll the knights on duty have also been imprisoned.â
âWhat? Why would the knights be locked up?!â
I stared in disbelief.
âBecause they failed to protect Your Highness. Sir Tierne was even physically hit by the Duke.â
Cecilia went on to say that the knights had to hold the Duke back, and that Sir Perel had told her not to mention it to me. But she confessed everything.
I was speechless.
Sir Tierneâwho probably followed the Duke more loyally than anyoneâhad been struck because of me?
âBy the way, Your Highnessâdid you see these?â
Noticing that I looked upset, Cecilia quickly pointed to the flower pots on the windowsill.
âI was going to ask. What are all those?â
âThey were brought by the castle staff.â
Cecilia smiled warmly.
âThey wanted to comfort you. Each person came carrying a flower pot.â
âOhâŠâ
They were worried about me? But why flowers?
âLeta said she overheard that Your Highness doesnât like cut flowers.â
ââŠI see.â
âAt first, it was just a few maids, but then it spread. People from the kitchen, even the stables, came to drop one off.â
Looking more closely, I noticed even more pots below the window.
I tried to get up, but Cecilia quickly waved her hands.
âYou shouldnât be moving yet!â
âIâm fine.â
When I stood up, she gently helped me over to the window.
ââŠTheyâre beautiful.â
Each pot was a different size, with a different type of flower. Some had little cards in them.
When I breathed in, I smelled a soft fragrance and the scent of fresh soil.
âRetta said all the maids were furious. They said whoever did that to you would be punished by heaven.â
Cecilia said firmly, as if to reassure me.
âEveryone was so worried youâd be hurt emotionally. Even Sir Norton told me to tell youâeveryone in the castle is on your side. Donât misunderstand.â
ââŠThatâs kind of them.â
Truthfully, I hadnât gone out of my way to treat the staff well before this.
But seeing a small flower pot with a white neflas bud that hadnât yet bloomed⊠made me smile without realizing.
The nightmare of the execution faded quietly from my mind.
***
Knock knock.
Loic knocked gently on the door.
âYour Grace? May I come in?â
A gentle voice answered from within.
Loic slowly entered the Grand Duchessâs bedroom, biting his lip.
She was sitting up in bed, supported by cushions.
He had already asked Whittle if it was okay to visit, so it seemed she was expecting him.
Seeing her usual bright face made his heart ache.
He stood still, unable to approach. The Grand Duchess tilted her head.
âYour Grace?â
ââŠâ
âWhy are you just standing there? Come sit down.â
She tapped the chair next to the bed.
But how could he shamelessly sit beside her after letting her be humiliated like that?
He hesitated, unable to move, and her brow twitched.
âNot going to come? Then should I come to you?â
She started to throw off the blanket.
With no choice, Loic rushed forward and sat down.
But even then, he couldnât find the words to speak.
He kept his head lowered and asked quietly,
âAre you⊠feeling better?â
âIâm totally fine. Really.â
Her voice was as cheerful as always.
âThanks to the mage, I feel full of energy. I guess healing magic actually works.â
âThis⊠will never happen again.â
Loic stared at his clenched hands and spoke firmly.
âFrom now on, the 1st and 2nd Knight units will guard you together. Sir Norton will be assigned solely to your protection.â
âThatâs not necessaryâŠâ
âThe troublemakers from the incident will be punished as soon as theyâre identified. The Merchantsâ Guild chief has been warned to stop the rumors about you. Anyone who speaks carelessly again willâŠâ
He was speaking nonstop, breathless and serious.
âYour Grace.â
The Grand Duchess gently interrupted him.
âI get it. But can you at least look at me?â
ââŠ.â
âYouâre not even going to look at me?â
Urged by her soft voice, Loic slowly lifted his head.
She leaned forward with her pale face close to his.
Her usually rosy cheeks were drained of color, and her long lashes trembled weakly.
And that large bandage on her foreheadâŠ
âDonât worry. Itâs nothing.â
Noticing where his gaze had landed, she started removing the bandage.
âLeave it!â
He tried to stop her, but she had already pulled it off.
âSee? Itâs nothing.â
ââŠIt left a wound.â
His voice trembled slightly.
Honestly, i wish we had been able to read the grand dukeâs reaction, and his actions towards the knights who failed in their duties and that damned guild leader. If he had actually interrogated him, he would have realized that this happened because of that b* and the head maid. Iâm getting fed up of those two and nothing being done even though they both keep disrespecting the grand duchess. Cmon
I hope that meisal btch are caught like she is so annoying and duke I know you are probably thinking this is ur fault but noooo pls investigate the doer this incident and slapped that girl
grand duke my man, i get you are angry, but hitting your knight is a bit far….
