Chapter 23
I turned to Dad first, ignoring the message window for now.
Even though he was once the Churchās hero, would he be okay with what he saw?
āIf he starts hating me or treating me like an enemy⦠that would be bad.ā
I canāt even change guardians anyway.
Just thinking about itā¦
Throb.
It felt like a part of my chest hurt.
āā¦Are you about to faint again?ā
āHuh?ā
āIām asking if youāre going to pass out soon, like when we came out of the portal earlier. It feels like you just did something big.ā
āOh.ā
Heās sharp. How did he figure out I used a skill?
I quickly shook my head.
āNo, thereās still time left.ā
āI see.ā
I didnāt let down my guard.
āIs this how God told you to handle things?ā
Dad suddenly said something strange.
āThat was impressive.ā
ā¦Thereās no way God told me to do that.
I glanced at the message window that was still hanging there.
āThis so-called ādivine messageā keeps telling me to do stuff like kiss him⦠how am I supposed to trust it?ā
My distrust kept growing by the second.
āItās true. There are too many fanatics infiltrating the Church. We keep trying to root them out, but we always fail.ā
That was true. The infiltrators were getting smarter every day, and the Church couldnāt keep up.
āHiding a tree in the forest is also a good method.ā
Dad didnāt ask how I figured out who the fanatic was. He didnāt ask what I said to him.
He didnāt even ask why I changed my voice and acted like a different person.
He just kept saying good things.
āYouāre⦠not going to say anything?ā
āMe? Why would I?ā
Dadās deep-set eyes looked at me.
āYou handled it well in a situation where you didnāt know who you could trust.ā
I blinked.
It felt like he trusted me no matter what, without asking for an explanation.
āBut⦠itās too dangerous.ā
I couldnāt answer, and Dad carefully reached out his hand.
Flinch.
āā¦Donāt shrink away.ā
His large hand gently rested on my shoulder. When I relaxed, he awkwardly pulled me into a hug.
āIt just looked too hard and dangerous for you to handle alone. Soā¦ā
When I looked up into his eyesā
āIāll become a fanatic too.ā
ā¦Huh?
Excuse me, what?!
āā¦D-Dad?ā
Did my ears just break?
āW-What kind of nonsense are you saying?!ā
Does he think being a fanatic is a joke?!
I scowled at him.
āā¦Why is it nonsense?ā
Dad looked a little dejected.
āYou can pretend to be a fanatic, but why canāt I?ā
āOh⦠pretendingā¦ā
I realized what he meant, but only for a moment.
āI have enough reason to do it.ā
He started explaining seriously.
āIf we say the Church abandoned me for a long time, and even tortured me, it wouldnāt be hard to convince the fanatics.ā
āNo, no, wait a second!ā
I held my head.
āWhere do I even start fixing this?!ā
If I got caught, I could at least reveal my āPurificationā ability and prove I was a Pope Candidate.
āBut if the former Church hero is revealed as a fanatic, the Church will go crazy!ā
The Church would try to cut ties and kill him.
And since Iām tied to Dad as my guardian, if he dies, Iāll die too.
āLike Iād let that happen.ā
But first, there was something else that bothered me more.
āWhat do you mean by ātorturedā?ā
He wouldnāt make something up.
And it sounded too specific to just be an example.
āā¦ā
Dadās troubled face confirmed my suspicion.
āIt was⦠nothing seriousā¦ā
āDad, are you keeping secrets from me? That hurts my feelings!ā
āNo! Thatās not itā¦ā
The big man fumbled awkwardly before finally covering his face with his large hand.
āā¦It really was nothing serious.ā
āYeah, sure.ā
āIn the past, the Church needed a strong-willed, corrupted Holy Knight to measure the pain and damage caused by berserk states⦠and I was⦠used for thatā¦ā
He couldnāt finish, but I understood the rest.
āThose insane jerks! They experimented on their own knights?!ā
I knew the story mentioned something like this, but I didnāt think theyād use the Churchās former hero!
āThis place is messed upā¦ā
The Churchās goals and people might be righteous, but their methods were far from clean.
āAnyway, it wouldnāt be hard to make a convincing story.ā
āYeah, I understand.ā
I said I understood, but that didnāt mean I accepted it.
Just then, I had an excuse to change the topic.
āLetās talk about this later.ā
I looked to the side.
āBecause Bennettās about to wake up.ā
A little later, we moved to another location.
Hereās a summary of what happened in between:
1. I fainted when the āChild Actorā skill ended.
(Note: Dad freaked out, even though I woke up sooner than last time. His pale face got even paler.)
2. We met the Inquisition investigators under the Vatican and got questioned.
(Special: The investigation ended quicker than I expected. Everyone treated me like I was some sacred unicorn.)
(Special 2: But they didnāt give me any information. Stingy jerks!)
3. Bennett woke up.
(Note: He woke up in my room. And nowā¦)
Our dear supporting character was currently like this:
āY-You wonāt get anything out of torturing meā¦!ā
āHe must remember getting knocked out by Dad.ā
Bennett was backed into a corner like a puppy separated from its mother.
He was holding a broken tree branch he mustāve found somewhere, trembling.
For humanitarian reasons, weād tied him up lightly (okay fine, we did tie him up), but the rope was loose on the floor now.
The chair heād been sitting on was broken too.
And the āweaponā he was holding was one of the chairās broken legs.
āLooks like he woke up while we were out for the follow-up investigation.ā
I glanced upward.
āDad, you knew he was awake?ā
About five minutes ago, one of the investigators came by for follow-up questions.
āCandidate Nemesia! Thank you for cooperating so sincerely during the investigation earlier! May I ask one more question?ā
At the time, Bennett was still asleep, and I let my guard down because I thought it would be a quick answer at the door.
āā¦I heard him wake up.ā
āThen why didnāt you stop him?ā
āI knew he couldnāt escape.ā
So⦠Dad heard everything, even Bennett breaking the chair?
Then I could guess why Bennett didnāt manage to escape.
āWhen did he set up a holy barrier? Heās thorough.ā
Thanks to Dadās preparations, Bennett couldnāt get out.
And you know⦠being thorough is kind of a fanaticās virtue.
āā¦You might actually make a good fanatic one day?ā
Dad reacted to my muttering.
āDo you think so?ā
Excuse me? Why do you look pleased?!
āDonāt look happy about that!ā
I frowned at him.
But he wasnāt the only one who heard me.
āIf⦠If youāre trying to turn me into a fanatic tooā¦!ā
Yeah, Iād said it loud enough for Bennett to hear on purpose.
Honestly, bringing him here and unintentionally locking him up wasnāt a bad thing for him.
āIf we hadnāt taken him, he wouldāve been dragged straight to the Inquisition.ā
Anyone exposed to fanaticsāpriest, knight, or traineeāgets taken to the Inquisition without exception.
And those guys⦠well, their name says it all.
Bennett had no backers, and he was just a trainee with potential.
The hardline inquisitors wouldnāt care about his circumstances. Theyād force him to testify no matter what.
And considering how many people came back broken from that placeā¦
āForget the philosophical ārethinking justiceā nonsense.ā
We basically saved this poor supporting characterās life, and he doesnāt even know it!
But I couldnāt explain all that, so I just smiled at him.
āYeah, yeah. Want me to turn you into a fanatic?ā
āEek! L-Like Iād let you do that!ā
At least he was polite enough to keep speaking formally.
āJust kidding.ā
āNo matter what you do⦠Huh?!ā
āI said Iām joking.ā
He didnāt believe me.
āYou wonāt get anything out of torturing me!ā
āI never said Iād torture you, did I?ā
Bennettās stick trembled in his hands. Oh, itās shaking.
āY-You might!ā
āThatās true.ā
I nodded. Bennettās expression turned confused.
I smiled wide on purpose.
Evilly.
āā¦Iāll leave it to your imagination.ā
āEeeek!ā
Maybe I should stop teasing him now.
I looked up at Dad and sent him a signal with my eyes.
After the first investigation, when we were heading back to my room, Iād asked Dad for a favor.
āDad, could you bring me that?ā
Hahahah itās so funny š poor Bennett
And honestly not derrick being excited about pretending to be a fanatic to support her. Realllly heās the best <3333 how dare the church torture him šš
