Chapter 24
The road was eerily empty, like something out of a lie.
Gimcheon City in North Gyeongsang Province was a quiet place with a population of 140,000.
But the view outside the car window gave off a bleakness that couldnât be explained by that one fact alone.
âStop right there.â
Soldiers stepped out from behind a barricade and blocked the vehicle.
[Transaction complete.]
[Transaction result]
â Transferred:Â Axe of Waves (Hero)
â Received: 200,000P[Current Points: 361,144P]
He had already recovered nearly half of the points he had dumped into random boxes.
Closing his status window after sealing a big deal, Do-yoon pulled a baseball capâbought from the last rest stopâlow over his eyes.
Ziiik.
A heavily armed soldier knocked, and the driverâs side window rolled down slowly.
âWhatâs the matter?â
âOhââ
The soldier faltered when he saw Han Yeon-ha.
She had a young, harmless-looking face and demeanor, with not a shred of intimidation in her presence.
âThis is a civilian-controlled area.â
Despite his stiff tone, his eyes and posture had already relaxed.
âYou canât proceed any further. Please turn back.â
âAh, itâs just thatâŠâ
ââŠ?â
âIâm not exactly a civilian.â
âAre you⊠a Player?â
The soldierâs expression was more baffled than disdainfulâless about looking down on her, more about the situation itself.
A Player diving into the Gimcheon Gate? Are they trying to get themselves killed?
Yeon-ha shook her head, recalling Do-yoonâs warning not to stand out.
âI-Iâm not a Player.â
âThen there are no exceptions. Please reverse your vehicle and leave the city limits.â
The soldierâs tone grew more cautious.
âIâm saying this for your safety, driver.â
âWhatâs going on in there?â
âThatâs classified.â
âDoesnât that just make people more curious? Whatâs inside?â
Leaning toward Yeon-ha, the Siren looked up into the soldierâs eyes.
âTell us.â
âI-I really donât know the details. Just that itâs a top-class Gateâuh?!â
The soldier slapped a hand over his own mouth.
âY-youâve got to be kidding me! What the hell?â
âHaa⊠The fact that Iâm not even surprised anymore is whatâs really shocking. What happened to the world?â
The Siren sighed, then turned to the soldier again.
âStop being startled. Call your comrades, open the barricade.â
The question marks vanished from his face.
Unless one had a certain level of mental resistance, there was no resisting the Sirenâs mind control.
âNo reporting to your superiors. No special measures.â
Repeating the same orders to the other soldiers, the Siren turned to Do-yoon.
âThis should block any further interference, right? Want me to add anything elseâŠ?â
âThatâs enough. You can head back now.â
âHead back? Where? Iâm coming with you. I can help.â
âIâd be happy if you didnât become a burden.â
âWhat do you mean âburdenâ?â
Her eyes flashed.
âI did my research, you know? Some monsters can think, even make tactical decisions, depending on their type. My abilities could come in handy.â
âThatâs not the issue.â
âThen what? Is it because Iâm an NPC?â
âSirenââ
âOh, I get it. Youâre a special, amazing Player whoâs immune to mind control and blood pacts and all that. You just operate on a whole different level than NPCs.â
âHey, thatâs notââ
âThen say it isnât.â
âIt isnât.â
âDonât think I canât tell when youâre lying.â
âŠSo itâs one of those âyouâve-already-decided-the-answerâ situations.
A bitter smile tugged at his lips.
âI should make this clear.â
Do-yoon continued,
âWhether NPC or Playerâor your term, âNew Humanityââthatâs the same. But thereâs a decisive difference.â
Only Players could fully exploit the systemâs intent.
âA decisive differenceâŠ?â
When Do-yoon brushed the air, the Siren blurted as if realizing,
âStatus window!â
âCorrect. Unfortunately, NPCs canât even recognize when they receive rewards.â
âAh, I get it now. Youâre saying not to pine for a tree I canât climb.â
Her brow furrowed slightly, her voice trembling as if holding back emotions.
âThen why drag me along in the tunnel? Was I useful then, but now Iâm just a piece of chewed-up gum?â
âIren-unnie, thatâs not fair!â
Like a child caught between bickering parents, Yeon-ha raised her voice.
âDo-yoon-nim trusts and relies on you more than you think!â
Did I?
The Siren turned to stare at Yeon-ha.
âYouâre the same. Players just stick together.â
âThatâs not true! Iâd neverââ
âForget it. This lowly NPC will get out of your way. Good luck.â
âU-unnie!â
Bang!
The Siren stormed off into the distance.
Do-yoon stuck his head out the window.
âHead straight to Seoul. Meet Chiron first when you arrive.â
Infusing his voice with internal energy, he sent the words to the back of her head, then turned away.
âLetâs move.â
âT-thatâs it?â
âWhat else do you need?â
ââŠYouâre not going after her?â
âWhat for? The whole cityâs under an evacuation order. We can floor it.â
Yeon-ha looked like she might cry, but eventually put her hands back on the wheel.
Vroooom.
The car passed the checkpoint and entered the road leading into the city center.
ââŠ.â
Yeon-ha kept glancing at the rearview mirror, sighing each time she looked forward again.
âIf youâve got something to say, say it.â
âI donât. What could I say?â
âReally? Then bury it and move on.â
âD-do you have to be so coldâŠ?â
âAm I a sticker?â
âEh?â
âWhat?â
ââŠI know thatâs not how you really feel about her. One warm word wouldâve been enough.â
âMy true feelings, huh.â Do-yoon tilted his chin.
âThen guess. What are they?â
âUh⊠wellâŠâ
âWeâll talk later.â
His gaze shifted outside.
The streets were desolate, no sign of human life.
In stark contrast to the bright sky beyond, the inner city was shrouded in thick black clouds, forming a sharp boundary.
Under that darknessâ
On the rooftops of buildings at every intersectionâ
Something was perched in dense clusters.
[âQiâ 11 â 15]
[âPerceptionâ 5 â 15]
[Spend 27,000P to enhance? Y/N]
Enhance.
[Enhancement successful.]
[Current Points: 334,144P]
Both stats jumpedâQi by 4 levels, Perception by 10.
His senses sharpened rapidly, the distant view snapping into focus.
His sensory nerves realigned, flooding his mind with clearer, faster information.
Those areâŠ
Hooked beaks.
Muscular wings and jet-black feathers.
Predatory eyes shooting murderous intent like laser beams.
They were a flock of beasts shaped like birds of prey.
Hundreds of crimson eyes glared down at the city, talons digging into the rooftop ledges.
Flash!
[Mission has begun.]
[Mission: âFlock Purificationâ]
[Description: The Phantom Crow Flock entrenched in central Gimcheon is expanding its territory throughout the city. Destroy all nests within the city and halt the flockâs advance.]
[Remaining nests: 20]
[Warning: High-difficulty mission. Current Player survival rate: 3%]
âYou see it too, right?â
âSo this is what a Gate raid isâŠâ
Yeon-haâs eyes froze on the âsurvival rate.â
âWhile we were trapped⊠other Hunters were fighting life-and-death battles.â
âNot everyone. Gate difficulty varies.â
There were currently 46 Gates scattered across Koreaâ
The Gimcheon Gateâs crow swarm ranked among the top three threats.
After his press conference, Do-yoon had learned plenty about the Phantom Crows:
-
Gimcheon Gate Survival: A Record of Escape from Hell â Survivor K
-
NB.15 âRed Eyes, Black Wingsâ â Phantom Crow â Beast Observer
-
Phantom Crow Analysis Report: Specs, Patterns, Ecology & Hierarchy â Gimcheon Research Lead
-
Smash the Nests: Nests Are Our Enemy â Gimcheon Raid Team Member
Thanks to the Library of Memories, heâd crammed the essentials in time.
And all accounts from those who had faced and hunted Phantom Crows agreed:
âTheir organization is terrifying.â
âThey arenât mere instinct-driven beasts.â
âIt feels like fighting soldiers bound by disciplineâelite, battle-hardened soldiers.â
âThis isnât a hunt. Itâs war.â
Tap⊠tap⊠tap-tap-tap.
An odd noise came from the car roofâlike a beak pecking the surface.
Scout crows.
Do-yoon already knew, from secondhand experience, what would follow.
âStop the car.â
âHuh?â
âI said, get out. Now.â
Before Yeon-ha could process, Do-yoon had flung his door open, ignoring the jolt, and stepped onto the road.
Shadows surged from all directions before he could even look upâ
The scoutsâ signal had brought the combat crows.
The noose tightened instantly.
Signs, power lines, traffic lightsâeverywhere he looked, crows.
Swarming.
Kraaak!
A piercing cry split the air.
And thenâ
Shhhk!
Black shapes dove from every direction.
Dozens of Phantom Crows hurtled toward Do-yoonâs head.
He bent low, ready to springâ
âAhâŠ!â
âbut every path was already blocked.
In desperation, his eyes flicked to Yeon-ha.
âH-help me!â
âŠ!?
It was strange.
Unbelievable.
An alien feeling wrapped her skinâDo-yoonâs eyes, usually unwavering in any crisis, were dim and swallowed by despair.
I⊠I have to do something!
Yeon-ha fumbled open her status window, tapping the skill tab.
[Blessing of Radiance (S)]
â [Healing Touch]
â [Shield of Light]
Activate.
[Select a skill.]
The only thing that might helpâ
Activate Shield of Light.
Nothing happened.
Why isnât it working?! Activate! Activate!
[Select a target.]
Realizing her mistake, she looked at Do-yoonâ
But he was already buried in feathers.
[Target: Combat Phantom Crow]
âNo⊠noâŠ!â
She didnât want to hear it.
Didnât want to hear the wingbeats, the sound of beaks stabbing into flesh, the dull crunch of bones breaking.
Yeon-haâs world shattered.
âA-ahâŠâ
Her empty eyes pictured only one thingâ
Do-yoonâs body, bloodied beyond recognition⊠or perhaps not even a body left at all.
Han Yeon-ha.
A voice echoed in her ears.
An auditory hallucination?
And thenâ
KWWAARRRRK!
A devastating burst of power.
Black waves split apart.
Crows with broken beaks were flung in all directionsâslamming into walls, toppling street trees, tumbling along the road.
At the center of it all stood Do-yoon.
âDo-yoon-nimâŠ!â
Not a scratch on himâhis entire body radiating a shimmering azure light.
âH-howâŠ?â
He glanced at his status window.
[Activating Cheonhwa Jingyeong (Epic).]
[Harmony Qi circulation initiated.]
[Intrusion detected. Defensive Qi barrier generated.]
[Rebound Force in effect.]
This was the power of his newly chosen exclusive martial art, Cheonhwa Jingyeong.
Combined with his existing internal energy, it had started at four-star proficiencyâenough to make him an impregnable fortress against the crows.
But instead of explainingâ
âWhat do you think makes a good healer?â he asked Yeon-ha.
âHuh? Whatâs with that questionââ
âAnswer.â
âI⊠I donât know.â
âHigh, wide healing output? Variety of support skills? Which?â
âB-both?â
âWrong. No matter whatââ
His face hardened.
âânever let the party fall apart. S-rank skills donât matter if you lose the one youâre supposed to heal.â
âI-Iâm sorry.â
She bowed her head low.
Even if it was a test, she had frozen completely in the moment.
There was no excuse.
âWhy so down?â
âI just wanted to be helpful this time⊠but I stood there like an idiot.â
Her voice shrank smaller and smaller, her eyes dampening.
âI guess thatâs a failing grade. Iâm useless.â
âOh, come on.â
Tap.
Do-yoon reached out and lightly touched her head.
âIs this something to bury yourself over? You canât fail a class you havenât even taken.â
ââŠHuh?â
âYou havenât even taken your first step yet. Nowâlesson one on becoming a healer beyond compare starts here.â
