Chapter 19 When Did You Figure It Out
So what kind of man was Xie Chengyu, really?
Xu Ruoxinâs eyes narrowed, her thoughts racing.
â
The next morning, Xu Ruoxin arrived at the set early with her assistant Fangfang, a chubby girl with round glasses, arms laden with over a dozen cups of milk tea. She looked exhausted.
Taking off her sunglasses, Xu Ruoxin said generously, âThank you all for taking care of me yesterday. My husband said he wanted to treat everyone to milk tea, so please, come get some.â
âWow, President Xie is so thoughtfulâhe even bought us milk tea!â
âHe really spoils Sister Ruoxin. Even the people who help her get remembered.â
The staff cheered as they rushed to grab drinks. In an instant, Nan Xiao found herself alone, clutching her script, body trembling faintly.
She had told herself yesterday not to get upset over these things. But feelings were one thing, reason another.
Hearing Xu Ruoxin publicly call Xie Chengyu âhusbandâ again made her ache unbearably inside.
She felt Xu Ruoxinâs mocking gaze sweep across her, sharp as needles against her skin. Instinctively, she wanted to flee.
But thenâ
âMiss Xu, you and President Xie are married?â
A lazy, magnetic voice cut through the chatter.
Xu Ruoxin turned. It was Xiao Zekai.
Handsome and striking, though not quite as polished as Xie Chengyu, he was still dazzling. Smiling lightly, she replied, âNot yet, but soon.â
âHeh.â
Xiao Zekai chuckled, and everyone could hear the ridicule laced in it. Xu Ruoxin frowned, puzzled at his reaction.
âSo youâre his girlfriend then?â Xiao Zekaiâs tone was cool. âFunny. I heard President Xie already has a wife. So that makes you the mistress, doesnât it?â
ââŠâŠâ
Every eye turned toward Xu Ruoxin, shock flickering across the crew.
If anyone else had said it, they mightâve dismissed it as gossip. But this was Xiao Zekaiâheir to a vast fortune, who had chosen instead to carve out his own path in showbiz and risen to the very top. His reputation was golden.
If he said it, people believed it.
âYouâre wrong!â
Color rushed to Xu Ruoxinâs cheeks. She slipped, showing a crack in her composure.
But she hadnât clawed her way up from nothing without cunning. Within moments, she steadied herself. She didnât know why Xiao Zekai had turned on her, but she knew she couldnât let this drag out.
âXiao-ge, youâre so good at joking.â She forced a smile and tried to walk away.
âWait.â
She stopped. âWhat else, Xiao-ge?â
Xiao Zekaiâs lips curved lazily. âIf I remember right, youâre older than me. How do you have the face to call me âgeâ? Shouldnât it be âbig sisterâ?â
ââŠâŠâ
âPfftâhahaha!â
Laughter erupted all around. Some staff bent double. Even Nan Xiao couldnât help laughing.
Xiao Zekai hadnât changedâsharp-tongued and merciless, man or woman, he spared no one he disliked.
Xu Ruoxin trembled with fury but forced out a strained smile.
âI only said it because youâre a senior in the industry. Nothing else. If you donât like it, I wonât call you that again.â
But the stares of gossiping, amused colleagues were too much. She fled the set.
â
Nan Xiaoâs stomach twisted uncomfortably. She decided to head back to the lounge to rest. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Xiao Zekai follow and then slam the door shut, standing at the entrance with furrowed brows.
His gaze on her made her uneasy. She opened her mouth, but he spoke first.
âYouâre still such a pushover. Another woman called your man âhusbandâ in front of everyone, and you just took it?â
Nan Xiao lowered her eyes. âIâm divorcing Xie Chengyu.â
The words stunned him.
Divorcing? Already? It had only been three years⊠though truthfully, heâd never thought theyâd last that long.
He strode over, clapped her shoulder, grinning with delight.
âLittle Bun, congrats on escaping hell. When did you figure it out?â
Nan Xiao shot him a glance. It wasnât that sheâd figured it outâXie Chengyu had been the one to initiate the divorce.
But she didnât tell Xiao Zekai that. Sharing a room with him still made her uneasy; she couldnât forget their last explosive fallout.
So she stiffened her face deliberately. âThat has nothing to do with you. Go back to your business.â
