~Chapter 32~
āThe garden, my bedroom, the parlor, the greenhouseā¦ā
Evangeline counted on her fingers, then shuddered.
āI mustāve made like ten different mock budgets.ā
From the beginning, Dietrich realized he shouldnāt have blocked Evangelineās potential.
Before assuming she’d struggle and stepping in, he shouldāve simply asked what she wanted.
Dietrich gave a wry smile.
Just then, more retainers entered the meeting room.
āGreetings, Your Grace.ā
āAh, Sir Warren is already here.ā
One by one, the retainers stepped ināand all were visibly surprised by how fresh and clean the meeting room felt.
But the part they appreciated most was unexpected:
āOh, did the Lady replace the chairs too?ā
āThe old ones were fine, but these have straighter backs. My back doesnāt hurt as much.ā
āI could sit in this all day, honestly.ā
āCanāt believe Her Ladyship thought about us old folks like this. Weāre grateful.ā
They laughed warmly, clearly pleased.
But the small touches didnāt end there.
āHuh?ā
Several retainers widened their eyes as they flipped through the documents.
āDid she print the text larger on purpose?ā
āMy eyes arenāt what they used to beāthis is perfect. No need for glasses today.ā
āCanāt believe she thought even of this.ā
They all smiled like theyād just received a thoughtful gift.
āFeels like sheās grown up overnight, doesnāt it?ā
Dietrich was struck.
Has Evangeline ever gotten such praise before?
Strange, but⦠refreshing.
The retainers had watched Evangeline grow up, and they adored her like a granddaughter.
Still, they hadnāt shaken the label they held deep down:
āThe immature young lady.ā
But now, for the first time, they said:
āSheās become quite the adult.ā
And the reason for that, of courseā
āIt must be thanks to Lady Ansi.ā
It felt almost magical.
Dietrich tried to hide the proud smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
During the meeting, the thoughtful details continued.
āLetās take a short break before we continue.ā
During the break, a maid entered.
āWeāve prepared refreshments and tea.ā
The snacks were small enough to eat in one bite, perfect for reading and eating at the same time.
Thatās when the new tea set caught some attention.
āDid Lady Evangeline choose this set too?ā
One retainer had an eye for fine teaware and asked Dietrich:
āThis is from the Wells Merchant Guild, isnāt it?ā
āSo Iāve heard. Why?ā
āWells always makes high-quality goods, but their designs donāt usually appeal to the younger generation.ā
He examined the cup closely.
āItās more of a refined style that older nobles like.ā
āReally?ā
āYes. I know the princess has elegant taste, but this cup feels less like her taste and more likeā¦ā
He shrugged with a smile.
āShe chose it with our preferences in mind.ā
Dietrich understood what he meant.
Evangeline usually followed modern, fashionable trends.
But older nobles had a very different sense of style.
In the past, her choices had been met with reactions like:
āHmm⦠a bit eccentric, isnāt it?ā
āThe princess has quite⦠bold taste.ā
āIsnāt this too flashy?ā
āI just canāt understand what young people like anymore.ā
But this time, the set was getting nothing but praise.
āYou may call me sentimental, but⦠it feels like watching my granddaughter grow up.ā
One retainer said with a chuckle.
Listening to all the compliments for his sister, Dietrich quietly commented:
āYou know, I think Iāve learned something new today.ā
āYes, Your Grace?ā
āNothing is more important⦠than choosing the right friend.ā
And with that, he went quiet.
But on his usually expressionless faceā
āa faint smile had appeared.
The retainers looked at each other, puzzled.
āSomething good mustāve happened to His Grace?ā
āDo you know anything?ā
āNo clue.ā
No matter how much they whispered, they couldnāt figure it out.
Only Dietrichās quiet smile deepened.
The meeting had started around noon and ended just as the sun began to set.
āPlease give our thanks to the princess as well.ā
āSeeing her act so mature today warmed my heart.ā
The retainers, oddly enough, seemed even more impressed by Evangelineās growth than the meeting itself.
And Dietrich agreed.
āEva really gave it her all today.ā
Even with Laritās help, she had put in visible effortāand that deserved praise.
So Dietrich turned to the butler who had come to escort him.
āWhereās Eva?ā
He wanted to compliment her today.
āShe went out, sir.ā
āShe went out?ā
Sheās never around when you go looking for her.
And yet she found time to step out during the retainer meeting?
Dietrich frowned slightly.
But the butler wasnāt finished.
āAlso, Lady Ansi is here.ā
āā¦Lady Ansi?ā
Dietrich looked back in surprise.
āYes, Her Highness called her over. She said sheād have to leave during the meeting and asked Lady Ansi to keep an eye on things in her place.ā
āI see.ā
Dietrich’s frown deepened.
āDid she just dump everything on Lady Ansi and go out?ā
He sighed at his sisterās carelessness.
āWhere is Lady Ansi now?ā
āIn the library, sir. Sheās looking up some materials.ā
āGot it.ā
With a nod, Dietrich impulsively turned to leaveāfor the library.
āWhy am I going to see Lady Ansi?ā
Even as he questioned himself, his feet kept moving.
āBecause sheās my sisterās close friend.ā
āBecause sheās helped guide that wild girl Eva in the right direction.ā
āBecause Evangeline insisted I take care of her.ā
All kinds of reasons filled his mind.
And Dietrichā¦
Was happy to be persuaded by every one of them.
yeah sure lil bro… we all know why you want to see her heheheh
