~Chapter 108~
[To my dear Lady Ansie,
It has already been two weeks since we last met.
The weather has grown quite coldâare you keeping well?
The reason I write is that I will attend the charity party hosted at the Grand Temple.
If it would not trouble you, I wish to ask you to be my partner at this event.
I shall await your reply.
â Dietrich von Claudius]
âGood heavens!â
I rubbed my eyes and looked at the card again, hardly able to believe it.
But the words were the same.
âSo⊠the Duke just asked me to be his partner?!â
Of course, I had attended events before at his side, but always because of some scheme by Lady Eva.
This was the first time the Duke himself had asked.
My heart pounded wildly.
âPlease, calm down, heartâŠâ
I took a short breath, trying to settle it.
At that momentâ
âLaritte, what does the card sayyy?â
Lady Eva sang out the question.
âW-well.â
My face burned red, and I lowered my head.
âHis Grace⊠asked me to be his partner at the charity party.â
âWhat? Really?!â
Lady Eva jumped up from her seat.
âWow, my slow friend finally got a proper partner request!â
âEva? Slow, you say?â
âOf course! Youâre always so slow and hesitant!â
She slapped her chest in exasperation.
âBut at least now⊠so, Laritte.â
Her smile turned sly.
âHow do you feel, getting a partner request? Hm?â
âM-my feelings?â
âOf course! Isnât that practically the same as a date request~?â
âThatâs⊠too much of an interpretation, isnât it?â
âWow, my brother will cry. He finally gathered courage to ask for a date, and youâre calling it over-interpretation.â
âEva!â
I raised my voice, then glanced again at the card, embarrassed.
ââŠStill.â
I rubbed the stiff corner of the card with my fingers.
âSince itâs Eva, just this once⊠maybe I can let a little of my feelings show.â
âIâm really happy.â
I whispered shyly.
Lady Evaâs eyes gleamed sharply.
âSo that meansâyou like my brother too, right?â
She struck straight to my heart. Ouch!
After a pause, I admitted carefully,
âWhat woman wouldnât feel her heart flutter with someone like the Duke?â
âUgh. With my brother?â
Eva grimaced briefly, then her eyes curved prettily.
âRemember what I told you? Iâll always support you and my brother.â
ââŠYes.â
Choked with emotion, I nodded softly.
She slipped her hand into mine.
âBut I knew you first, and Iâm your friend first. Got it?â
She warned me seriously.
âEven if you and my brother get along, donât forget to spend time with me too. Okay?â
âOf course.â
Eva looked relieved at that, though not entirely satisfied.
ââŠBut between my brother and me, who do you like more?â
The answer was obvious.
âOf course, I like you more, Lady Eva.â
âRight?â
Her shoulders lifted high with pride.
That evening.
In the Claudius townhouse carriage, Dietrich was deep in thought.
âDid the card⊠arrive safely?â
Even while busy with council meetings, nobles, officials, and paperwork, his mind stayed fixed on the card he had sentâasking Laritte to be his partner.
âWhen will her reply come?â
He clenched his fist, strangely anxious.
âWhat if Lady Ansie refusesâŠ?â
He gave a wry smile.
âHow ridiculous. Iâve never felt like this before.â
And yetâit wasnât unpleasant.
Rather, it was exciting.
Moments later.
âWhereâs the butler?â
Entering the townhouse, Dietrich meant to ask about a reply.
But insteadâ
âOraa brother~â
Evangeline ran up, wearing a sly smile.
âWhat now?â
Dietrich frowned. Every time his sister wore that face, she said something annoying.
And sure enoughâ
âSo, I hear you sent Laritte a partner request?â
âAh⊠itâs this.â
She was grinning like a mischievous imp.
Suppressing a sigh, Dietrich asked,
âHow do you know that?â
âI saw the card arrive, of course.â
âWhy did you look at it?!â
He raised his voice, both embarrassed and irritated.
âYouâve been spending too much time at the Ansie townhouse! People will think itâs your house!â
âUgh, scolding just because you have no comebackâŠâ
Evangeline covered her ears.
She wasnât wrong, and that made Dietrich stiffen.
âReally, stop bothering Lady Ansie. Understood?â
âWhat? Sheâs my friend!â
She pouted, then added smugly,
âNo matter what you say, it wonât work.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âBecause Laritte told meâshe likes me more than you.â
Dietrich froze.
ââŠReally?â
âOf course. Thereâs a true bond between women that men canât interfere with.â
Proudly, she nodded.
âSo youâd better treat me well, if you donât want to lose points with Laritte.â
Dietrich was speechless.
And what was worseâhe couldnât even deny it.
âHere, look at this.â
Evangeline held up an envelope between her fingers.
âNo way?â
Dietrichâs head throbbed.
âLaritteâs reply.â
Her victorious smile stabbed him further.
âArenât you curious?â
ââŠ.â
âSee how much Laritte trusts me? She even entrusted me with her precious reply.â
ââŠ.â
âSo? Doesnât that make you want to treat me better?â
Dietrich clenched his teeth, tormented by a very basic sibling urgeâ
An urge he hadnât felt since the age of ten.
âIf only I could smack her just onceâŠâ
It won’t hurt. Just once and all your worries fade. I can relate to just wanting to tell them off~
Don’t tease them too much Eva, they are the type to hold on to their feelings too long if they are treated like that.
đđ€Łđđ
That is a primal instinct possessed by all siblings. Don’t be ashamed.
Eva truly has the younger sibling spirit
Lol
Eva my cutie
Theyâre really siblings alright! đ
