Chapter 9
Finding a Flying Ship Isnât So Simple
âWow, there are so many different flying ships!â
âDo you want to look too, Tee-chan?â
Nokti poked her little head out from the backpack to peek at the display of flying ships.
âAre you kids fans of flying ships?â
A friendly shop lady smiled and started a conversation.
âYes! We came to buy one!â
âOh my, did you come with your parents to look around?â
âNo, we came to buy our own flying ship!â
At that, Main and the others who had been browsing came closer.
âWaitâjust the two of you came?â
âUh, well, three of us actuallyâbut right now itâs just two.â
The clerk looked a little confused, but didnât seem too concerned.
âWell, you know, flying ships are very expensive. Especially hereâour products are a little pricier than other shops.â
She clearly didnât think we could afford one. To be fair, that was the normal assumption.
âOh, weâve been saving up in our village, so we think we can afford a used one.â
I held up the pouch full of zenny for her to see. The clerkâs eyes widened slightly in surprise.
âIn that case, would you like to take a look at our used models in the warehouse?â
âYes, please! Oh, and we also have a letter of introduction.â
I handed her the letter Hans, the traveling merchant, had given us.
âLet me have a lookâŠâ
The shop lady turned the letter over, spotted Hansâs signature on the backâand her eyes widened again.
Maybe Hans was more important than we thought?
âAnd, um⊠is Mr. Gran here?â
â!? âŠYou mean Chief Engineer Gran? Ah, um, Iâm afraid he retiredâŠâ
âOh, I see. Thatâs fine, then.â
âTh-then please wait just a moment! Iâll call the manager right away!!â
And with that, she dashed off toward the back room.
âShe ran offâŠâ
âYeahâŠâ
âWhat a frantic one,â Nokti muttered.
After a short while, the woman returned with a man in tow.
âWell, well, well! Welcome, young master and miss, to our illustrious Fourth Factory!â
The middle-aged man, with a thin mustache and a sticky smile, rubbed his hands together and crept in close.
âI am Gameln, the owner of this fine establishment. I hear youâre looking to purchase a flying ship today?â
âY-yesâŠâ
As soon as I said that, his grin widened and the hand-rubbing intensified.
âWell, if this is a direct introduction from Master Hans himself, then of courseâwe must show you only the finest flying ships in our collection!â
âEh? Um⊠by âfinest,â do you meanâŠâ
My heart skipped a beat. But we were here to see used ones, not the top of the line.
âRight this way then! Weâll start with our latest modelsâyou can even take one for a test flight! You there, prepare the VIP room at once!â
âU-uh, actually, we probably canât afford anything too expensiveâŠâ
At that, Gameln froze mid-hand-rub.
ââŠOh? And what do you mean by that?â
âWe saved up to buy a used flying ship.â
At that instant, his smile twitched, and his mustache gave a little jerk.
ââŠAhhh, used, I see. I see, I see! My mistake, terribly sorryâgot a bit carried away, hahahaâŠâ
Then, dropping the smile entirely, he turned his back and very audibly clicked his tongue.
âWell then, the⊠ahem, Third Warehouse. Someone will show you thereâfeel free to browse at your leisure~â
His tone shifted completelyânow flat and boredâas he mumbled about âurgent businessâ and began to leave.
âDid his whole attitude just flip?â Main whispered.
From the bag, Nokti muttered, âWow, that was fastâŠâ
The female clerk returned, looking flustered.
âAh, um, this way please, Iâll guide you.â
Honestly, I was irritated, but I took a deep breath and followed her toward the warehouse.
âOh, and one more thing,â Gameln said with a sleazy grin as he walked off.
âYouâre welcome to look, but try not to touch things too much, alright~?â
And then he finally left for real.
ââŠâ
âThis is the Third Warehouse.â
Following the clerk, we passed through a large shutter door.
Inside was far bigger than Iâd imaginedârows upon rows of flying ships lined up neatly under the high steel rafters. The air smelled faintly of oil, dust, and aged metal.
âWow, I thought used ones would be all beat up, but these are actually pretty nice!â
Mainâs voice bounced happily.
âTheyâve all had basic maintenance before being displayed here,â the clerk explained.
âCan we take a look around freely?â
âOf course. Please call me if you need anything.â
After a polite bow, she stepped back, and we began wandering among the ships.
Each one had its own storyâthe faded paint, the patched metal seams, the mismatched partsâeach told a tale of its past.
âHey, what about this one? Itâs all round and has little wingsâso cute!â
Main pointed to a small, plush-looking ship.
âUh⊠that oneâs performance isnât exactlyâŠâ
âLooks like a kidâs toy!â Nokti snorted.
âAww, but itâs cuteâŠâ
Main pouted.
âWhat about this one? The performance specs look good, and itâs fairly newâthough the cargo space is small.â
I pointed to another model.
âHmm⊠not cute,â Main said flatly.
âThis oneâs no good either,â Nokti sniffed. âToo many custom modsâsurprised it hasnât exploded yet.â
Sure enough, when I looked closer, there were sloppy weld marks all over.
âDoesnât seem like weâre finding muchâŠâ
âYeahâŠâ
We both sighed at the same time.
âThe popular models and newer ones tend to sell fast,â the clerk explained apologetically. âSo we donât have as many in stock.â
âIf youâre interested in new ships, we could perhaps make a special arrangement, considering your letter of introductionâŠâ
âI see. Weâll think about it.â
With that, we left the warehouse.
âWhat do we do now, Sky?â
âThere are other factoriesâletâs check them out.â
We spent the rest of the day visiting a few more, but they were all about the same.
âFor now, itâs getting late. Letâs stay at a hotel tonight and start again tomorrow.â
âYeah, no need to rush. Letâs relax and get something tasty to eat!â
âNow that Iâm excited for!â
âYou must be tired too, Noktiâbeing stuck in the bag all day.â
âPlease. I used to live inside the Sterlingâthis is nothing.â
âAlright then, once we book a hotel, letâs go grab a good dinner!â
And with that, we hurried off to find a place to stay before heading into town.
âWow, look at all these restaurants!â
âAnd the smellsâman, Iâm starving already!â
Before us stretched a cobblestone street lined with eateries.
Glowing signs flickered like neon lights, food stalls spilled onto the sidewalks, and the air was alive with sizzling sounds, savory spices, sweet bread aromas, and the smoky scent of grilled meat.
âAhhh, there are too many choices! How do we pick?â
Main darted from window to window, her eyes sparkling.
âThis oneâs roasting whole chickens! That oneâs grilling fish!â
âHey, this place says theyâre famous for hearty meat soupâlooks incredible!â
Even though it was only evening, the street was packed with people, laughter, and upbeat music.
Overhead, a small advertising airship zoomed past, shouting, âLimited-edition meat piesâalmost sold out!â
âHmmm⊠I canât decideâŠâ
As Main looked around indecisively, a whiff of sweet, smoky sauce drifted from a side street.
ââŠHuh? That smellâŠâ
âOh yeah, thatâs gotta be the one!â Nokti said.
We exchanged glances and followed the scent down the narrow lane.
At the end stood a small, old-fashioned diner with a simple wooden sign and warm light glowing from within.
From inside came cheerful chatter and the voice of what sounded like a friendly owner.
âThe atmosphereâs nice too⊠should we go in?â
âYeah!â
With our hearts fluttering in anticipation, we gently pushed open the doorâ
