Chapter 7
A New Power: âClass Changeâ
We were at Sumika Villageâs air terminal, waiting to board the airship bound for the industrial city of Gearberg, where the factory was located.
âIâm so excited, Skye!â
âYeah. Finally⊠finally, weâll be able to buy our own airship!â
âI canât wait! Tii-chanâs excited too, right?â
Nocty was riding along as a pet, tucked halfway inside Mileâs bag with just his head peeking out.
Iâd told him he could just stay inside the ring if he didnât like being treated like a pet, butâ
âThatâs boring! I wanna feel the wind out here!â
âafter a bit of whining, this compromise was the result.
âAttention, passengers. The ship bound for Gearberg will be arriving shortly. Please proceed to Deck Two for boarding.â
There were about fifteen passengers in total, including usâfamilies with children, young couples, and a few explorer-types among them.
âWeâll be departing soon. Please remain seated and enjoy your flight.â
We took seats at the very front by the window, the best spot for the view.
âWow⊠look at that! A sea of clouds as far as you can see!â
Mile pressed her face against the glass, her eyes sparkling.
âHow long until Gearberg?â
âWeâre stopping at a few airports along the way⊠probably about three hours.â
I flipped through the Monthly Airship Magazine spread across my lap.
âHey, have you decided what kind of ship you want?â
âHmm⊠something for two people, with a large storage bay. And ideally⊠a model thatâs easy to customize.â
âThen let me pick the color!â
âSure. As for performance and specsâNocty, Iâll need your advice.â
âLeave it to me!â
From inside the bag, Nocty puffed out his chest confidently.
âââ
About an hour after leaving Sumika Village, the initial thrill of the flight had worn off. We relaxedâme flipping through my magazine, Mile munching snacks sheâd brought.
âHmm, this new model looks goodâŠâ
âMmm, this snackâs amazing! Totally buying more of these.â
A peaceful, ordinary momentâ
Until the calm was shattered by a voice over the shipâs speakers.
âAttention, passengers. Weâve detected combat activity along our flight path.â
A wave of murmurs rippled through the cabin. Someone gasped.
âFor your safety, weâll be changing course temporarily. Arrival time may be delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.â
A click signaled the end of the announcement, and tension settled over the cabin. Outside, the cloud sea remained tranquilâalmost mockingly so.
ââŠWho do you think is fighting?â
âMaybe a Deepcloud Beast⊠or sky pirates?â
Mileâs voice trembled slightly.
I closed my magazine and stared out the window.
âWeâre not gonna get caught up in it⊠right?â
Nocty, oddly quiet, finally spoke.
âHey, Noctyâsomething wrong?â
âYeah. That woman from beforeâs nearby.â
âYou mean Captain Reina?â
âThatâs right. Sheâs probably engaging a Deepcloud Beast.â
I rememberedâshe had mentioned investigating those creatures when we met in the village.
Though distant, I could faintly see streaks of light cutting through the clouds ahead.
Our ship veered off course to avoid the area.
Just as the glowing bands vanished from view and the passengers began to relaxâ
The ship suddenly shuddered.
GAGANNN!
âKyaaaa!â
The vessel lurched violently. Through the window, I glimpsed something long and blackâa tail?
âW-what was that!?â
From the gap in the clouds, a gigantic shadow emerged.
âNocty⊠that wasââ
âYeah, no doubt about it. A Deepcloud Beast!â
The next instant, a heavy impact rocked the hull.
CRACKâCRASH!
Glass shattered, lights flickered out. Sirens wailed and red emergency lamps flashed overhead.
âEntering emergency alert mode! All passengers, fasten seat belts and assume crash postureââ
The announcement cut off mid-sentence.
The control systems were failing.
âSkye, at this rate the ship wonât hold together!â
âDamnâŠ!â
Thenâa blinding flash split the sky.
Bursting through the clouds came the crimson airship Ruvinas.
Its forward cannon blazed like lightning, tearing straight through the Deepcloud Beastâs body.
The creature roared in pain, convulsed, and plunged back into the cloud sea below.
A sigh of relief swept through the passengersâbut it didnât last.
âThe shipâs⊠still falling!?â
Someone shouted. I looked out.
We were losing altitude, tilting slightly downward.
âMain engine must be damaged!â
âCan you tell, Nocty?!â
âYeah. I scanned itâthe main engineâs completely offline. Weâre running only on the auxiliary power unit, but the hull damage means thereâs not enough output.â
âThatâs badâŠâ
Just then, a flight attendant rushed over.
âIs there a Mr. Skye from Haino Village aboard?â
I raised my hand, and she told me the captain wanted to see me in the cockpitâimmediately.
Confused why Iâd been called, I entered the cockpit.
The captain turned to me gravely.
âWe received orders from Captain Reina of the Ruvinas to bring you here.â
Her voice came through the comm speaker.
âSkye, we meet againâthough only by speaker this time.â
âThereâs no time, so Iâll be brief. I need your helpâwith the power that only you possess.â
At once, I knew she meant the ring.
âThe passenger ship youâre on has lost its main engine. Itâs flying only on auxiliary thrust, but that wonât last.â
âAt this rate, itâll crash into the Deepcloud Sea.â
âWeâre preparing to tow you with the Ruvinas, but your shipâs instability might snap the tow arm.â
âSoâI need you to use your power to stabilize its flight.â
âDo you think I can really do thatâŠ?â
âYou can. With Noctyâs help. Misty will send guidance through him.â
If I was the only one who could do it, then there was no choice.
ââŠUnderstood. Iâll try!â
âGood. Head to the auxiliary engine room at the stern. Youâll get instructions there.â
âCaptain,â the shipâs commander said, âare you sure itâs safe to leave this to a single child?â
âIâll take full responsibility. Trust him.â
I sprinted to the rear of the ship.
The auxiliary engine was running but unstable, energy flows surging irregularly.
Inside the engine room, I summoned Nocty.
âNoctyâwhat do I do?â
âMisty just sent me the procedure.â
âWeâre gonna perform a Class Change. Youâll switch to the Machinist class using data she transmitted.â
âSo Iâll be able to use a Machinistâs abilities?â
âExactly. Normally youâd be limited by your base stats, but Iâll boost you. Energy efficiencyâll suck, but with your Star Crystalâs class, brute forceâll do.â
âMy⊠Star Crystalâs class?â
âNo time to explain! Letâs start!â
âClass Change: Machinist!â
Blue particles swirled around Nocty and streamed into my Star Crystal.
<<âŠMachinist data confirmed. Installing class dataâŠ>>
<<Installation complete. Executing Class Change to MachinistâŠ>>
A flood of knowledgeâschematics, control theory, energy tuningâpoured into my mind.
<>
âSo this⊠is the Machinistâs ability.â
âIâll handle the output regulation. Letâs do this!â
I pressed my left hand over the Star Crystal on my chest and touched the engine with my right.
The crystal glowed blue-white; the engine pulsed with light, filling the room with azure radiance.
The glow condensed into rhythmic pulses, and the metal conduits began to vibrate.
KiiiiinnnâŠ!
âNow, Skye! Lock the output!â
âGot itâgooo!â
I focused every ounce of will.
The engine roared like a beast, then settled into a steady hum.
âEmergency descent control restored. Propulsion output stabilized. Maintaining safe altitude.â
The systemâs automated voice echoed through the room.
âPhew⊠that did it, right?â
âYeah. Perfect.â
It was my first time doing anything like thisâClass Change, Machinist skillsâbut somehow⊠it worked.
Then came a heavy metallic clunk as the Ruvinasâs tow arms locked onto the ship.
âTo all passengers aboard the linerâthis is the Rivelia Third Fleet flagship, Ruvinas. We will now tow your vessel safely to the nearest airport.â
âWeâre savedâŠ!â
âMommy, are we okay now?â
âYes, sweetheart. Itâs all right.â
Cheers and applause filled the cabin.
When I left the engine room, Mile was waiting, beaming.
âSkyeâyou were amazing!â
âHeh⊠I wasnât sure I could pull it off, but Iâm gladâŠâ
âWith my support, of course it worked!â Nocty crowed.
Back in the cockpit, the crew thanked me over and over.
Through the speaker came Captain Reinaâs voice:
âI knew you could do it, Skye. Excellent work. Thanks to you, our missionâs complete. Weâll talk more once you arrive.â
There was pride in her tone.
Passengers offered their thanks again and again.
It was a little embarrassingâbut more than that, I was simply happy I could help them all.
At last, the airship reached Gearberg Airport safely.
As I descended the gangway, golden hair shining in the sunlight, Captain Reina stood waiting to greet us.
