Chapter 5Â
The Crimson Warship Comes to the Village!
Right now, weâre on our way back from the ancient ruins in the Sanctuary to Haino Village.
Itâs still early summer, but the sunlight is strong, and even standing still makes you break a sweat. We took a break in the shade of a tree, enjoying some snacks that Mile brought along.
âHey, Tee-chan, want some of this too? Hereâah~nâȘâ
The âNocty Boomâ is apparently still going strong in Mileâs world.
Even though Nocty calls himself a âgourmet,â when it comes to food, he obediently lets Mile feed him without resistance.
Seems even a so-called Great Spirit canât win against his appetite.
âHey, Sky, with what we earned this time, how much do you think weâve saved up for the airship fund?â
âHmm⊠probably around three hundred thousand zenny.â
âWow! Then we could already buy a used airship, couldnât we?â
âYeah, maybe. Iâm planning to visit the sky island where the factories are to check it out.â
âThen Iâm coming too! And Iâm sitting in the navigatorâs seat, no arguments!â
âActually, after the Starfall Ritual, Mile told me straight up, âIf youâre leaving on a journey, Sky, Iâm coming with you!â
Apparently, she even chose the Scout class specifically so she could travel with me.
âIâll keep an eye on you so you donât do anything reckless. Momâs cheering me on too!â
She said that so earnestly, without even blushing.
Honestly, Iâm really happy she wants to comeâbut I canât help wondering if she really understands what sheâs getting into.
âTee-chan, ah~nâȘâ âŠWait, maybe sheâs just doing this to hang out with Nocty?
âAnyway, letâs get going.â
âYeah! When we get back to the village, Iâll cook Tee-chan a special dinner!â
We left the mountain trail and started down the main road, the air cooling as the sun began to sink. It was the perfect time for walking.
Thatâs when it happened.
A massive airship cut through the clouds in the distance.
âHey, Sky, isnât that red ship heading toward the village?â
âYeah⊠youâre right. That emblemâif Iâm not mistaken, it belongs to the Rivellia Third Fleet.â
âSo that means itâs a ship from the Rivellia Free City Federation, right?â
âI think so. If I remember correctly, thatâs one of their newest cruisers. I saw it in this monthâs Skyship Magazine.â
âWhoa, a new model, huh? Itâs hugeâŠâ
âHey, whatâs this âRivellia Free City Federationâ thing?â
âOh, right. You wouldnât know, since you were stuck in that relic for so long.â
âThe Rivellia Free City Federation is a union of seven major cities. Our village is part of their alliance too.â
âEach city sends a representative to form the Council of Seven Cities, which handles most of the governing.â
âI see.â
âBut why would one of their warships be heading toward our village?â
âGood question⊠letâs get back and find out.â
With that, we quickened our pace toward the village.
âââ
When we arrived, the airship was hovering above an open field at the edge of the village.
Its hull gleamed a bright crimson, sleek and curvedâcompletely unlike the bulky, rugged image I had of a military vessel.
Several smaller landing shuttles were parked in the square, surrounded by curious villagers.
âLook, whoâs that talking to the village chief?â
Standing before him was a striking woman with long, golden hair and emerald-green eyes.
âSheâs in uniformâmust be from the Federation military.â
âLetâs get a bit closer!â
âââ
âI apologize for arriving unannounced.â
âOh, not at all, Captain, itâs an honor,â the village chief said humbly.
âI am Captain Reina Valmond, commander of the flagship Rubinas of the Rivellia Free City Federationâs Third Fleet.â
So this was her shipâthe crimson cruiser.
âI am Murai, the chief of this humble village of Haino. May I ask the reason for your visit?â
âWell, about that⊠is there somewhere private we could talk?â
Captain Reina glanced toward the growing crowd of villagers.
âOf course. Please, come to my home. We rarely have the honor of hosting officers of your standing.â
âThank you for your courtesy,â she said, following him with two escorts into the chiefâs house.
âŠFor a moment, I thought Captain Reinaâs eyes flicked toward me. Probably my imagination.
âHey, Sky, wanna take a closer look at the ship?â
âYeah, letâs.â
Up close, its sheer size was overwhelming.
âWow, itâs even bigger than I thought!â
We both stood there for a while, staring up at the floating vessel in awe.
âIâd love to ride one of those just once.â
âSky, you really do love airships, donât you?â
Just then, an older manâprobably in his late fiftiesâwearing a mechanicâs uniform and sporting a white beard, called out to us while working on one of the landing shuttles.
âHey, kidâyou aiming to be a pilot?â
âUh, yes! Thatâs right!â
âGood for you. Airships, huhâtheyâre full of dreams!â
The man chuckled warmly, still tinkering with his tools.
âWere you a pilot yourself, sir?â
âWell⊠a long time ago, yeah. These days I just handle maintenance.â
He twirled a wrench and slid it neatly into his chest pocketâsmooth, practiced movements.
âIs it tough being a pilot?â I asked nervously.
He grinned. âOh, itâs tough, all right. Youâve gotta read the wind, know your engineâs moods⊠But once youâve flown up thereââ
He gazed up at the massive ship in the sky.
ââonce youâve soared through those clouds, youâll never be satisfied with the ground again. Thatâs just how it is.â
âAnyway, keep chasing it, kid.â
He gave a casual wave and went back to work.
âYes, sir! Thank you!â
Hearing that only made me more determined than ever to take to the skies.
After a while, we headed home.
âââ
That evening, we relaxed around a dinner that Mileâs mom had kindly prepared for us.
âHey, that captain lady was so cool, wasnât she? Totally the image of a strong womanâI kinda look up to her.â
âYeah, itâs pretty rare to see a woman commanding a warship.â
Thatâs when Nocty suddenly cut in.
âBy the way⊠did you notice? That woman was wearing a Star Ring.â
âWhat!? Are you sure?â
âPositive.â
âThen that means⊠Captain Reina might have a spirit like you?â
âMost likely. Though, of course, not nearly as magnificent as me.â
He puffed out his little chest proudly.
âYeah yeah, Tee-chanâs the best, right?â Mile teased, giggling.
âFor now, letâs put that aside. Tomorrow, letâs ask the chief what the captain wanted.â
âAgreed. Weâll go right after breakfast.â
âââ
The next morning, while the three of us were eating breakfast, someone knocked on the door.
âSky, you in there? Thereâs someone here who wishes to speak with you.â
âY-yes! Coming!â
I quickly had Nocty retreat into the ring, fixed my hair, and opened the door.
There stood the village chiefâand beside him, those shining emerald eyes and radiant golden hair.
It was her.
Captain Reina Valmond herself.
