Episode 4
Encounters Come Without Warning
âWhew, thatâs enough for today, Nocty.â
âNice work today!â
âYeah. At this rate, weâll hit our goal soon.â
Noctyâwell, that relicâto be precise, the being sealed inside that ringâwas who he was talking to.
According to his own introduction, heâs a âgreat and mighty spirit.â
âŠThough in appearance, he looks like a small puppy with wings.
Maybe because heâs self-conscious about it, he gets really mad if you call him things like âcuteâ or âtiny.â
And calling him âTee-chanâ is a total taboo.
Well, except for Mile. She keeps calling him that anyway.
Right now, what weâre doing is digging up relics in the holy sanctuaryâs ancient ruins to sell themâ
raising funds so we can buy our own flying ship.
âSky! Tee-chan! Time to go home!â
Mileâs voice rang out behind us.
âI told you not to call me Tee-chan! How many times do I have to say it!?â
âBut doesnât âTee-chanâ sound way cuter than âNoctyâ?â
âI donât need to sound cute! GrrrâŠ!â
Nocty growled in frustration, glaring at Mileâwho only laughed at his reaction.
It was such a normal, everyday exchange now.
But on the day I first met Nocty, the whole village had been thrown into chaos.
â About two months earlier â
My encounter with Nocty came completely out of nowhere.
After the Starfall Ceremony, when I returned home, I heard a mysterious voice guiding me toward a relic.
When I opened it, I found a silver ring set with a long, blue gemstone.
And from that ringâ
âPheww~! Finally out! You saved me, kid!â
âHuh!?â
âWhatâs wrong, boy?â
âMâMonster!!â
âIâm not a monster! Iâm what you humans call a spirit! And not just any spiritâTHE Great Spirit, mind you!â
The tiny, winged creature stood proudly on its hind legs, puffing its chest out.
It⊠was actually kind of cute.
âA spirit? Like the ones that appeared during the Starfall Ceremony?â
âDonât lump me in with those mindless drones!â
âWell, they glowed way brighter than you though, and looked more, uh, spirit-yâŠâ
ZGOOON!
âOw!! Why did you body slam me!?â
âBecause you said something rude, obviously!â
âHey, Iâm supposed to just believe youâre a spirit out of nowhere!?â
âWhatever. For now, put on that ring.â
I hesitated, but he wouldnât stop yelling at me, so I gave in and slipped it onto my right index finger.
âGood. The contractâs complete.â
âWaitâcontract!? As in, Iâm your contractor!?â
âExactly.â
ââŠCan that contract be canceled?â
âNope! Oh, and you canât take the ring off either.â
âWhat!? Heyâcome on!â
I pulled as hard as I could, but it didnât budge.
âTold you. But relax! I exist to lend power to my contractor. So youâve got nothing to lose!â
âAlright then, introductions are in order.â
The self-proclaimed Great Spirit continued talking like he owned the place.
âMy nameâs Nocty! Pleased to meet ya!â
âIâm Sky, but uh⊠sure.â
âLetâs get to it, Sky. How much do you know about Starstones and spirits?â
âUhh⊠Starstones are needed to gain a class, and spirits are supposed to be messengers of the gods?â
âHmm. About what I expected from current civilization.â
âSo, you do know more?â
âOf course! I know everything! âŠOr I would, if I wasnât missing so much of my data.â
âWell, letâs start with Starstones.â
âTheir official name is Star Crystals.â
(Waitâwasnât that what the spirits mentioned during the ceremony?)
âStar Crystals function to receive, transmit, record, and execute data. They can also act as a power source.â
âReceiving data⊠that mustâve been the light during the ceremony. And recording means storing class powers?â
âPretty much. The light you saw was the data for your class being transmitted from a satellite.â
âSatellite?â
ââŠJust think of it as one of the stars in the sky.â
âNext is the function that lets you use your class.â
âThe classâs power comes from data, right? So the Star Crystalâs job is to make that data usable.
Thatâs why you canât use class powers if youâre too far from one.â
âThatâs about all you need to know for now.â
âNow, about me.â
âIn short, Iâthe Great Spiritâam the administrator of the Star Ring.
My main role is to manage its data.â
âAnd the Star Ringâs main function isâits library.â
âLibrary? What do you mean byââ
Knock knock.
âSky, you home?â
â!? Wâwait, just a secondââ
Before I could answer, the door swung open.
âMom says youâre joining us for dinneâoh my gosh, whatâs that!? Itâs soooo cute!â
âWait, Mile, let me explainâ!â
She ignored me completely, lunged forward, and scooped Nocty up.
âHey! Donât just grab me! Let me gooo!!â
Nocty wriggled frantically, but Mile didnât care in the slightest.
âSo, whatâs this little guy?â
I told her everything that had happened.
âSo Tee-chanâs a spirit, huh? And he lives inside that ring?â
âWhat did you just call me, girl!?â
âNocty, so⊠Tee-chan! Cute, right?â
âYou mocking me!? Iâm the Great Spirit!â
He flailed his paws in protest, but Mile just hugged him tighter.
âEven angry Tee-chan is adorable!â
âDonât call me cuteeee!â
At that point, I realized: thereâs no winning against Mile.
Eventually, a flustered Nocty retreated into his ringâ
only to be lured back out again when Mile promised him a delicious dinner.
When I asked, âDo spirits even need food?â he said he could taste and convert it into energy.
âIâm a gourmet!â he declared proudly⊠even though heâd been sealed away for who knows how long.
Now, with Nocty in her arms and a bright smile on her face, Mile led us to her house.
She introduced him to her parents like it was the most normal thing in the world.
At first, her parents were speechlessâbut once they learned Nocty was a spirit, they treated him like a royal guest.
He didnât seem to mind, happily eating more food than I thought his tiny body could possibly hold.
âItâs⊠decent,â he said between bitesâbut he was clearly enjoying himself.
After dinner, as we were about to leave, Mile threw a fit saying she wanted Nocty to sleep over.
Her parents finally scolded her into giving upâreluctantly.
On the way home, Nocty looked completely content, either from the food or the relief of being freed from Mileâs hugs.
Back home, we discussed what to do next.
We decided to report everything to the village chief tomorrowâit was bound to get out eventually anyway.
The next morning, before sunrise, Mile showed up at my house again.
Obviously, she was there for Nocty.
By the time I came out, he was already devouring the breakfast sheâd made for him.
(Heâs totally been tamed through food. Some Great SpiritâŠ)
After breakfast, we all went to the village chiefâs houseâ
with Nocty, of course, being carried by Mile.
People stopped and stared as we passed by, wide-eyed in shock.
Well, itâs not every day you see a real âspirit.â
We explained everything to the chief, and with Mileâs persuasion, Nocty was granted permission to stay in the village.
Naturally, he became the center of gossip overnight.
Despite his arrogant way of speaking, his cute looks made him incredibly popularâ
especially with the village girls, led by Mile herself.
After the âNocty Boomâ in the village settled down, a traveling merchant came to town.
Even with my parentsâ inheritance, we couldnât just keep living without income.
At first, I thought of helping with village work, but Nocty suggested,
âWhy not sell some relics? Theyâd fetch a good price.â
So we did.
Nocty stayed inside the ring this timeâno need to start a second Nocty craze.
The merchant had set up his stall in the square.
He looked to be in his late forties, and helping him was a red-haired girl about my age with round glasses and a peculiar way of speaking.
âWelcome. What brings you here today?â
âIâd like to sell a relic I found in some ancient ruins.â
âOh ho, how intriguing. May I see it?â
I took out a piece from my pouch and handed it over.
âHmm, metal, yet surprisingly light.â
âMinato, mind giving it an appraisal?â
âSure, lemme see.â
The girl studied it carefully, then her eyes lit up.
âWhoa, I just appraised itâitâs made of somethinâ called Tianite!
Itâs lighter than iron but way stronger!â
âHey mister, you sellinâ this to us?â
âDo you have any more of these?â
âJust this one and another piece for nowâbut we can get more.â
âI see. In that case, Iâll return next month.
If possible, please bring whatever you can find.â
âHow about⊠twenty thousand zenni apiece?â
âWhâ!? I-I mean⊠yes! Thatâs perfect! Iâll sell them!â
âGreat! Looks like business is boominâ, Dad!â
And just like that, we sold the two relics for forty thousand zenni.
Since then, our days have been filled with relic hunting to raise funds.
But at the time, none of us could have imaginedâ
that this would be the event that changed our destinies forever.
