Chapter 19
At the moment Diana supposedly gave sight back to Catherine, Catherineâs vision was already fine.
The priest Diana had bribed told Allie the sight he took from Diana would drift away into the void.
Allieâs heart sank in fear. If Diana truly gained her sight back? Their plan to kill her could end in disaster.
âYour Grace, this feels like a fraud!â Allie hurried toward Diana, desperation in her faceâeven stronger than when sight was given to Catherine.
âHere is the priestâs insignia, Your Grace.â Belinda interrupted coolly at Dianaâs side.
Allie ground her teeth. Whether this priestâs claim was truth or lie, she had to stop him. Sweating, she stepped in front of him.
âYour Grace, seals can be falsified! Sight drifting in empty airâIâve never heard such a thing.â
âHmmâŠâ Diana stroked her chin as if pondering. Allie, suspicious, leaned close and whispered in Dianaâs ear:
âThe priest must have heard rumors and come for money. Heâs surely a con artist.â
âThatâs not true.â The old priestâs sharp eyes glowed from beneath white brows, and Allie recoiled.
âI want nothing from money,â he replied. âI only wish to restore the Grand Duchessâs sight.â
Diana gave Belinda a subtle nod. Quick to react, Belinda stepped aside, moving Allie out of the way.
âDid my sight really wander in empty air?â Diana asked the priest, tilting her head ironically.
âYes.â
âAnd I gave that sight to my daughter? Curious indeed.â
Allieâs body trembled. Guilt washed her shoulders down. As if she couldnât live with her crime. How pathetic.
Diana clicked her tongue inwardly and waited. The priest spoke again.
âI canât fully explain it, but during meditation I discovered a mysterious power.â
âMeditation?â Diana echoed.
âYes. Seeking the source, I traced it back to the House of Ernestâ*
âHow!?â Allie blurted, covering her mouth in shock.
âI heard rumors you restored sight to the Lady Catherine, so I sought you here.â
The priest calmly concluded. Allie stared, alarmed.
âCould such a thing actually happen?â Diana asked innocently.
âItâs nearly impossibleâlike a miracleâthat I discovered wandering power during meditation.â
âA miracleâŠâ Diana smiled. Everyone loves that word. But Allie looked horrified, afraid Diana might actually regain sight.
âWhat is this power?â Diana gently prodded.
âI used my holy power to gather it into this.â The priest dug into his robe and produced a fist-sized crystal orb shimmering with verdant green, like midsummer foliage.
âNo, Your Grace!â Allie implored again. âPlease donât trust it. What if itâs dark magic?â
Diana chuckled softly. Dark magic? A fear only someone as ignorant of real magic as Allie could conceive.
âAllieâŠâ Dianaâs tone was icy now.
âYes?â Allie answered with a tremor.
âYou seem to want me to remain blind.â
âIâNo, of course not!â Allie shrieked defensively.
âYou wouldnât know the darkness Iâve felt,â Diana said, her voice low and intense.
âIâI donât understandâŠâ Allie stammered.
âWhen youâre blind, you cling to anythingâa tiny thread of hope. Thatâs what darkness does.â
Calming her tone, Diana continuedâwith a hint of reproach.
âBut you said you worry for me as a friend, Allie?â
Allie gripped her fists, feigning concern.
âIf you truly cared, wouldnât you support me?â
Dianaâs words stung. She paused before speaking again.
âAnd donât forgetâIâm studying magic now. I feel it clearly: the sacred power in this orb.â
She turned to the priest.
âSoâŠmy sight returned is truly in here?â
âYes, Your Grace. Touch it, and your sight will return.â
âPlease, Belinda.â Diana looked to her lady-in-waiting.
âYes, Your Grace.â Belinda lifted Diana’s hand and placed it over the orb.
With a crackling hum, the orb began to fracture. Emerald light shimmered through the cracks like fireflies.
Allie swallowed hard, praying silently, Please donât let this work. But the light intensified, swirling around Diana.
Then it streamed into her eyes.
âItâs done, Your Grace.â
Diana trembled as she removed her blindfold, revealing lush golden lashes and emerald-green irises.
She blinked twice, shedding a single tear in the process.
At the same moment, Allieâs heart plummeted. Her expression spoke volumesâthe sight was back.
âIâŠcan see. So wellâŠâ Diana looked around in wonder. She knelt before Allie, clasping her trembling hands.
âItâs so clear, Allie!â
âMyâŠcongratulations, Your GraceâŠâ Allie stuttered.
âItâs a miracle! Heaven was moved by the Grand Duchessâs kindness!â a maid exclaimedâand soon, the entire staff gathered.
They looked upon Dianaâs vibrant emerald eyes and erupted in applause. Allie couldnât force a smile amid her internal collapse.
The News Spreads
Calypso, hearing the commotion, left the office.
âShe can see?! The Grand Duchessâs eyes have opened!â appealed a servant.
âThe heavens have not abandoned her!â another declared.
âReally?â Calypsoâs head snapped toward Diana. Their eyes met.
âTrulyâŠ?â he asked.
âYes, darling!â Allie echoed his astonishmentâwith the same stunned expression.
âA miracle like thisâŠ!â
Diana dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief. Calypso and Allie exchanged uneasy glances.
âMy deepest congratulations, Your Grace.â
Calypsoâs tone was stiff, devoid of real warmth.
Then Catherine, fully prepared, descended the stairsâeager to attend the tea party.
Diana ran to embrace her.
âMy precious daughter, Catherine!â
ââŠMother?â
Surprised, Catherine frowned and looked at Allie with suspicion.
âMy sight has returned, dear Catherine!â
âYes?â Catherine asked.
âTo be able to gaze upon you againâŠin my own eyesâŠunbelievable.â
Dianaâs voice quivered with emotion. The priest watched silently. Then Dianaâs gaze met his. The priest winkedâwith a knowing glance.
It was Ruehli, using magic to disguise himself as the priest.
Diana bowed slightly in gratitude. Then Ruehli slipped away before anyone could react.
âWhatâŠhappened?â Catherine looked at her familyâfaces filled with shock confirmed it was real.
Diana released Catherine and mused softly,
âHow oddâŠmy sight was drifting there in that voidâeven after I gave it to you.â
âThat canât be.â Catherine trembled, beads of sweat forming across her brow. Sheâd barely debuted; such a revelation unnerved her.
âThat itâs called a âmiracleââI suppose I must believe. After all, you wouldnât give me my sight if you werenât ill yourself.â Diana teased sharply.
Catherine trembled even more.
âYou seem unwellâare you feeling unwell?â Diana asked, placing a hand on her forehead. As expected, Catherine had no fever.
âBut⊠I believe this calls for rest. Sit this one out, Catherine. You shouldnât attend today.â
âYes?â Catherine squeaked.
âBut I need you to send Allie a letter cancelling her attendance. She canât be trusted in this state.â
Sheâd intended to go herself, holding Catherine by her sideâbut now Catherine was âsick,â and a mother couldnât send her child alone.
âAllie⊠but preparations are already made.â
âHow can I send someone sweating like this to a tea party?â Diana said calmly, eyeing Allie as well, whose hands trembled as much as Catherine.
Then Diana paused, looking directly at Allie.
âBesides⊠youâre a stranger to the Duchessâs guests. It would be rude, donât you think? My vision is restoredâI will accompany Catherine myself.â
Allieâs hopeful smile, the one she believed would endure, crumbled completelyâand Catherineâs expression mirrored that collapse.
How does heavenâs bliss taste when one is plunged into hell? Diana offered them both a calm smile and soft eyesâthough her lips hinted at victory.
What a marvelous show đ€
