Episode 3. Encounter with the Hidden Power
Late evening.
Two men entered the Duke of Devonâs office with excited faces.
âTwo people saw it, sir! The sacred beast detection crystal was glowing with a brilliant purple light!â
The dukeâs aide, Count Russell, spoke with spit flying from his mouth, while beside him, the knight commander, Baxter, nodded and added:
âYes, sir. A new knight saw it first, and then Sir Martin confirmed it.â
âThe rookie screamed when he saw it, Your Grace. I mean, the crystal hadnât glowed in 500 yearsâwho wouldnât scream? Hahaha.â
The two men exchanged their excitement. Even Baxter, who was normally calm, seemed unusually thrilled.
And it made senseâamong the four great noble families that ruled the North, South, East, and West of the Freeman Empire, the Devon family was the only one whose sacred beast had never been born in 500 years.
So this strange event was big enough to shake not only the North but the entire Empire.
However, their masterâDuke Kassirian Devonâsat silently with his back turned to them.
Feeling awkward, Russell cleared his throat.
âIf weâd known this would happen, we shouldnât have left the crystal collecting dust in the training yard. Had we displayed it here, Your Grace wouldâve been the first to see the light!â
âDoesnât matter.â
Kassirianâs deep, cold voice cut him off.
âA sacred beast changes nothing.â
The Duke stood up, his powerful muscles stretching his shirt and trousers. He was only twenty-five, young but built like a warrior.
âA sacred beast is just another soldier. One more fighter wonât change the fate of this land.â
Russell fell silent. The Duke wasnât wrong.
The North was cold and barren, sunlight rarely reached it, and food shortages were constant. Even if a sacred beast appeared, it wouldnât feed the peopleâits powers were only for battle, not for growing crops or changing weather.
âThen what if Your Grace announced it publicly? It might give the people hope.â
âNo. False hope brings disappointment. Make sure no one spreads rumors about the beastâs awakening.â
âUnderstood.â
Russell pouted silentlyâBut at least the other nobles wouldnât look down on us anymore!âyet he kept that thought to himself.
Suddenly the office door burst open.
âYour Grace! Commander!â
A young knight ran in.
âThree children snuck out earlier. We think they went into the northern forest!â
âWhat?! At this hour?â
Russell gasped.
âBaxter, Iâll go first. Bring the knights quickly.â
Kassirian grabbed his jacket and dashed out. Baxter followed immediately.
Russell sighed.
âHe always handles everything himself⊠Better call the physician now. Heâll come back all scratched up again.â
And he hurried out after them.
* * *
âA miracle⊠this is a miracleâŠâ
When Baxter reached the forest entrance, he was stunnedâthe missing children stood there perfectly safe, not even a scratch on them.
âA white bird brought us here!â
âYeah! It grabbed my hat and pulled me along!â
Baxter smiled faintlyâkids and their wild stories.
Then he noticed Kassirian staring up at a tall fir tree.
âYour Grace, what are you looking at?â
On the lowest branch sat a small white bird.
âThat bird apparently saved the children,â Kassirian said quietly.
âAh, kids mustâve imaginedââ
Baxter stopped when he saw the Dukeâs serious face.
âItâs breathing heavily. Mustâve flown here in a rush.â
Baxter squintedâthe Duke was right. The birdâs chest was rising and falling quickly.
Then, as soon as it met Baxterâs gaze, the bird suddenly took off and tugged at Kassirianâs jacket.
âItâs asking us to follow.â
Before Baxter could respond, the Duke sprinted into the forest after it.
âKnights! Follow His Grace!â
But after a while, they lost the birdâit had flown too fast.
âYour Grace, itâs getting late. We shouldââ
âShh.â
Kassirian motioned for silence.
âOver there.â
He moved into a patch of thorny bushes. Suddenly, thud!âa small white weasel had hit its head on a rock and fainted. The bird fluttered anxiously around it.
âItâs probably rabid, sir,â Baxter warned.
Another knight added,
âIâve seen weasels like that beforeâinfected by parasites, attacking people, then knocking themselves out.â
Ignoring them, Kassirian stepped closer. The bird tugged his pant leg, leading him right to the weasel.
âYou saved my people,â he said softly to the bird. âSo Iâll save your friend.â
He gently picked up the fainted weasel and handed it to Baxter.
âTake it to the physician.â
Then Kassirian scanned the surroundings. He noticed six large vine clusters on the groundâsomething moved inside them.
âThis isâŠâ
He looked closerâLycan wolves, trapped and writhing among the vines.
Kassirianâs red eyes glowed sharply as he glanced back at the white weasel in Baxterâs arms.
* * *
I was running in a dreamâbeing chased.
Kids threw rocks at me, yelling that I was an orphan. Then my landlord screamed that I hadnât paid rent.
When I remembered that I had paid this month and stopped running, black werewolves charged at me.
Why is everyone after me?!
I shoutedâand suddenly woke up.
A cracked stone ceiling filled my vision.
I sat upâmy head throbbed. When I touched it, I felt a bump.
âSqueak⊠squeak⊠(Where am IâŠ?)â
A tiny animal noise came from my throat. Rightâstill stuck inside the novel world.
I sighed and looked aroundânext to me lay a half-naked man.
What theâwho are you?!
I whipped my tail over my face in panic, but the man didnât wake. Slowly, I peeked again.
He was stunningly handsomeâsmooth bronze skin, dark gray hair, long lashes, a sharp nose, soft pink lips, and sculpted muscles like a statue.
Then it hit me. I knew this man.
From the start of The Knight of the Red Sword:
âWith a bronzed muscular body, ash-gray hair, and ruby eyesâthe Duke of the North, Kassirian Devon, was the finest man in the Empire.â
âSqueak! (Shit!)â
I squealed.
The manâs red eyes openedâand locked directly onto mine.
