Chapter 4.
When I Become the Villainâs Secretary (4)
Feeling awkward, I asked, âShould I⊠help you with another problem?â
Indelis finally snapped out of it and shook his head.
âYouâwhat are you, no⊠who are you? You⊠seriously, you⊠ah.â
His soft, maple-leaf-colored hand covered his face as he rubbed it in disbelief.
It was strangely cute, and for a moment I forgot he was a prince and just chuckled.
âSo now that I solved it, will Your Highness forgive me?â
âForgive? Ah⊠yes. Killing off such talent on the spot would be too wasteful. Where are you affiliated?â
Indelisâwho had been ignoring me until a moment agoânow stared at me with sparkling eyes.
Hmm⊠how do I answer that?
I didnât want to reveal that I was the Emperorâs secretary.
Their sibling relationship wasnât exactly harmonious as it was. If he found out someone more capable than him was on the Emperorâs side, he’d become troublesome.
As I hesitated, Indelis narrowed his eyes.
âWhat, why arenât you answering? Donât tell me⊠are you actually an infiltrator in disguise?â
âNo! Of course not! IâmâuhâwellâŠâ
Damn it, better to be a secretary than a spy.
âI am the personal secretary of His Imperial Majesty, Helwid, inheritor of the will of the great Sun.â
âOhhh, I heard a new secretary was hired. So that was you⊠I mean, you.â
Huh. Much calmer than expected.
He even corrected himself from saying âyouâ informally to âyouâ formally.
âThen why hide it? You couldâve said so from the beginning.â
Indelis frowned.
âIâwellâŠâ
Like he ever gave me time to explain.
âIâll be resigning soon. It felt weird to introduce myself as a secretary when Iâm about to quitâŠâ
Trying to look apologetic, I answered. Indelis seemed amused and raised a corner of his mouth.
âSo the one who just became His Majestyâs secretary⊠that lady from Count Nostalgiaâs family, right?â
âYes, thatâs meâBlein Nostalgia.â
âStrange. For a countâs daughter, your manner of speech is too casual. Are you truly a noblewoman?â
Wow. Just like his brotherâsarcasm and twisting every sentence.
âI donât care much about social circles, so my etiquette is lacking. If Iâve offended you, I apologize.â
Indelis studied my face carefully, as if confirming the rumors.
âYouâre not even weird-looking. Actually, youâre quite beautiful. Why avoid society?â
Beautiful, he says. In other words: stunning enough to dominate the empire.
In the original novel <The Villainâs Secret Desire>âfamous for its extravagant descriptionsâthe villainess Blein Nostalgia was breathtaking:
Mysterious hair like rose powder mixed into milk, soft lavender eyes unlike Indelisâs, translucent skin, cheeks like pink hydrangeasâŠ
My beauty rivaled even the heroineâs.
I puffed my cheeks in mild annoyance, and Indelis suddenly burst into laughter.
His laughter was bright and clearâlike bells ringing.
âThey say you talk back to the Emperor without hesitation⊠and here you are showing that same insolent expression to a prince. You really are unique.â
âI seeâŠâ
âAnd for someone who âcanât do society,â you seem quite capable of interacting with people.â
âOh. Thatâs different.â
When I answered without backing down, Indelis laughed againâgenuinely amused.
Seriously, what is with this family? Say anything and they lose their minds laughing.
âYou said youâre quitting? Why? Being the Emperorâs secretary is an extremely honorable position.â
âIt doesnât suit me.â
âThen what does suit you?â
âDoing nothing and eating.â
âDo-⊠Pfft! AHAHAHAHA!â
He hit the desk as he laughed.
When I stared at him, wondering what was so funny, he wiped his eyes with chubby little fingers.
âLady Blein.â
âYes, Your Highness?â
âDo you know how many sacrifice sleep and meals to become the Emperorâs secretary?â
âWell⊠I assume a lot? Even my predecessor was supposedly a genius.â
âYes. Your seat grants wealth, honor, and proximity to the highest existence in the empireâthe Emperor himself.â
Indelis leaned his cheek on his hand like a lazy kitten.
âSo why throw that away?â
âAs I said. Doesnât suit me.â
âYouâre not just sugarcoating it because I donât get along with His Majesty?â
Oh? So thatâs what he assumed.
Before I could speak, he smiled like melting snow.
âThen allow me to assist you with your resignation.â
âReally?!â
âYes. And once you resign, come to me.â
ââŠExcuse me?â
âSomeone as brilliant as you shouldnât waste your talent as a secretary. Become my private tutor.â
âŠWhat? What was that?
âYou may not be suited to secretarial work, but judging from how you solved the problem, youâd make an excellent teacher.â
He smiled with expectation.
âWhat if I refuse?â
âThen⊠I will give you mercy and let you choose between public execution or dismemberment.â
âŠRight. Of course. Things were going too smoothly.
I sighed.
âPlease process my resignation with His Majesty firstâŠâ
âSo?â
Helwid smiled down at me gently.
But knowing his true nature, that gentle smile looked more like a snake eyeing prey.
Trapped like a mouse in a coil of a snake, I swallowed.
âIâI might become the princeâs private tutor. If not, thenââ
âSo you fear a princeâs threat more than the decree of the Emperor?â
He spoke kindly, urging me to continue.
Just scold me already. The smiling is scarier.
I wilted.
âNo⊠of course not⊠Iâll handle it myselfâŠâ
âGood. Then itâs settled.â
He flipped through papers again, making it clear he didnât want trivial matters brought to him.
I trudged back to my desk, wondering how to report this to the prince.
âMy secretary is very capable. Getting a job offer in such a short time.â
Helwid teased me, smiling innocently when I glared. I wanted to smack his forehead ten times.
âYou just imagined hitting me ten times, didnât you.â
Whatâhe reads minds now?!
He twirled his pen, smiling smugly.
âThat reaction tells me Iâm right.â
âHitâ?! Of course not. I may lack formality but Iâm not violentâha haâŠâ
âYes, yes. My secretary may lack manners, but violence is not one of their faults.â
âRight, absolutely. Ha⊠ha haâŠâ
I should ask permission to breathe at this point.
While reviewing documents related to palace security enhancements, I found a report about last nightâs unidentified intruder.
âThere really was an intruder?â
âMy secretary must not listen when I speak.â
âNo, Iââ
âNo?â
âI have committed a grave sinâŠâ
I answered in defeat.
Helwid turned another page.
âThey reached my office, yet no wounds and nothing stolen. Not a simple thief.â
âWhat about confidential documents?â
âAll untouched.â
âThen why sneak in?â
âThat is the mystery. If someone can get into the imperial palace and reach the Emperorâs office, theyâre highly skilledâŠâ
Helwid stroked his chin, then looked at me suddenly.
Why that look? Why do I feel nervous?
âMy secretary, do you have time?â
âNo. Iâm extremely busy.â
I pretended to be engrossed in work.
But this was Helwid.
He stood, walked over, and sat on my desk.
âAre you not busy, Your Majesty?â
âNot too busy to speak with my secretary.â
Damn it.
ââŠsigh. What is it. Youâre not suggesting I catch the intruder, right?â
He smiled brightly.
Oh, hell no.
âNo. Impossible. Iâm weak. I canât use magic, I canât fight. The only thing I can do isââ
âRun your mouth?â
âRunâ Your Majesty, where did you learn that expression?â
He pointed at me like obviously, from you.
âŠRight. Who else would speak like that in the Emperorâs office.
I buried my face in my hands.
âI leave it to you.â
âWhy?!â
âBecause it is my decree.â
AUGHâ!!
His laughter rose proportionate to my despair.
âI canât live like this.â
Three days since the Emperor ordered me to catch the intruder, I was withering.
Helwid demanded hourly reports. Indelis kept pressuring me to resign and be his tutor. My father submitted resignation petitions dailyâand I had to read them aloud.
Truly, a shrimp crushed between fighting whales.
Helwid, after a walk, was napping on the sofa inside a canopy.
Meanwhile, I was stuck doing secretary work and searching for an intruder.
He looked like a sleeping angel.
He became Emperor young and suffered countless assassination attempts.
In the novel, he could only sleep when the heroine was near due to severe insomnia.
âMaybe having a secretary who only speaks about work makes you feel safe enough to sleep.â
He smiled when I asked how he could sleep with someone working beside him.
Fine. Whatever. If he can sleep, good for him. Must be horrible to close your eyes and expect a blade at your throat.
