Chapter 5Â
Olivia lowered her head, trembling in fear. The Duke looked down at her coldly for a brief moment, then turned away without hesitation.
ââŠWhat kind of jerk talks to a child like that?â
I clenched my fists in frustration, glaring at his back.
According to Oliviaâs memories in the novel, Duke Este acted as if he wanted to deny her very existence.
His younger sister, Lady Emma Este, had run away with a dark sorcerer, abandoning her fiancĂ©. Not only thatâshe gave birth to a child without marriage and then died soon after.
Because of this, the Holy Church excommunicated Lady Emma for disgracing her noble status and duty. As a result, the Este family was branded as âa house forsaken by Godâ and lost its honor.
To restore his familyâs reputation and mend relations with the Church, the Duke was forced into a political marriageâwith the Saintess, Evangeline Roxanne Esteâa woman he didnât love.
But that arranged marriage collapsed because of Evangelineâs hypocrisy and repeated affairs.
So the Duke began to hate Oliviaâthe cause of that marriageâand left her to suffer. Olivia later believed that was why he neglected her.
Still, no matter what happened, how could he treat a child that way?
Even when I read the novel, I couldnât understand his behavior.
So what if his sister made mistakes? Olivia did nothing wrong. The adults were the ones at fault. The Duke was simply blaming the wrong person.
Anger boiled up inside me. I shouted after him as he walked away.
âDonât you think that was too harsh, Your Grace?â
Everyone around gasped loudly. Even louder than before.
The Duke stopped at the entrance of the mansion and turned to me, his eyes icy cold.
ââŠWhat did you say?â
âIf you can tell sheâs been crying, shouldnât you comfort her instead of scolding her? Her eyes are all red! How could you speak so cruelly to a crying child?â
The Duke let out a short, dry laugh.
âCruel, you say?â
âYes! Or am I wrong?â
I glared back at him. It wasnât easyâhe was a full head taller than meâbut I refused to back down. My conscience wouldnât allow it.
The Duke frowned deeper, his dark red eyes meeting mine. The silence that followed was suffocating.
Thenâ
âHa.â
He smirked suddenly and stepped closer, placing his hand on my shoulder.
Startled, I almost pushed him away, but before I could, he whispered near my ear,
âSo this time, youâre trying to paint me as the villain, is that it?â
ââŠWhat?â
âYou accused me of being harsh to that child. But do you know who pushed her into this position? You did. You spread the rumor that anyone who touched her would be cursed by the dark sorcererâs blood. Donât tell me you thought I wouldnât find out.â
ââŠ!â
My eyes widened in shock.
In that instant, everything made senseâthe maids refusing to approach Oliviaâs house, the servantsâ cold sneers, the gloves Olivia always wore, and that maidâs bitter words earlier.
It all came from Evangelineâs own cruelty.
I was speechless. But the Duke didnât stop.
âI know what kind of person you really are behind that saintly mask. No one else might know, but I do. You even kicked out your maid Anne and that priest Claude not long ago. Iâm sure you had some twisted reason for that too. You wouldnât have thrown out your loyal servant and your lover for nothing. Am I wrong?â
âW-What? Thatâs notâ!â
âI donât care what schemes youâre planning, but donât cause unnecessary trouble. The only reason I tolerate you is because of my familyâs honor and the pressure from those old fools in the Church. If not for them, youâd have been thrown out of this castle long ago.â
ââŠ.â
âDo you understand, my great Saintess?â
His low, disdainful voice cut through me like a blade. After tapping my shoulder a few times, he turned his back and walked away.
I stood frozen, staring at him blankly.
Then, anger replaced my shock.
I rushed forward and grabbed his wrist.
âHow can someone like you abandon a child?â
ââŠWhat?â
âYes, Iâve done wrong too, but youâre no better. Youâre supposed to be her father, yet you left her to someone like me! Arenât you ashamed?â
ââŠHave you lost your mind, Saintess?â
He growled.
I let go of his wrist sharply.
âWhy? Did I hit a nerve?â
âYouâ!â
âOh, enough. Whatâs the point of arguing? Weâre both at fault anyway.â
âHa! YouâSaintessâ!â
âWell then, Iâve already greeted you and congratulated you on your return. Since my face clearly annoys you, Iâll take my leave. Please rest well, Your Grace the Great Duke of Este.â
I curtsied politely, lifted my dress slightly, and turned away.
Behind me, I heard his bitter laugh and the murmurs of the servants. I ignored them and muttered under my breath,
âWhatâs the use of being handsome if heâs that awful?â
Honestly, when I first read the novel, I thought maybe the Duke neglected Olivia because seeing her reminded him too much of his dead sister.
But I was wrong. Oliviaâs guess was right. He simply hated herâfor tarnishing the Este family name.
And he hated Evangeline, tooâfor being forced into a loveless marriage because of that same child.
Judging by how he talks, heâd probably throw me out or even get rid of me if he had the chance.
I made up my mind.
Once I earned Oliviaâs forgiveness and found a way to survive, I would divorce that insufferable Duke and leave this place for good.
Of course, Iâd need to prepare a way to live first.
Lost in thought, I walked away faster.
In the imperial capital, inside the great Lytendra Cathedral.
At the very top of the tallest towerâthe home of faith and the resting place of Temitraâs Holy Swordâsat a young man on a throne-like chair.
He was Linus Kay Carmine, the Pope, and Temitraâs First Disciple.
Wearing a black robe, his short gray hair framed a gentle, handsome face. He read quietly from a holy book resting on his knees.
âThose who earnestly pray to God shall receive what they desire.â
His gray eyes glimmered strangely as he paused at that line.
âYour Holiness, are you inside?â
A knock came at the door.
Linus closed the book and replied softly, âCome in.â
The door opened, and a man with red hair entered, kneeling with both hands open in reverence.
âI greet His Holiness, the First Disciple of the Great Goddess Temitra.â
âWhat brings you here, Cardinal Cario? Shouldnât you be busy preparing for Mass at this hour?â
Linus placed a hand on the manâs shoulder kindly.
Cario hesitated before speaking quietly.
â…Your Holiness, Father Claude has been imprisoned in the Duke of Esteâs dungeon. Heâs accused of luring and blackmailing the Duchess.â
ââŠWhat did you say?â
Linus frowned slightly.
Cario flinched at his expression, his voice shaking.
âF-Father Claude insists heâs innocent, but theyâre forcing him to explain what he and the Duchess talked about that day. He canât defend himself properly.â
âAnd what, pray tell, has our Saintess Evangeline been doing while all this was happening?â
Linus asked calmlyâbut his eyes were cold.
