CHAPTER 42…
Jaina bit into the thick steak and frowned. A steak should be properly cooked and tender to be enjoyable, but the one currently filling her mouth was far too tough. No matter how much she chewed, it wouldn’t break down.
âAnd itâs so underseasoned too…â
Just as she was about to complain, Jaina suddenly sensed something was off. Though she couldnât explain why, she realized it was a dreamâand opened her eyes.
âMm?!â
She quickly opened her mouth in shock. What she had thought was steak in her dream⊠was actually Theoriseâs arm.
âDid you sleep well?â
Theorise greeted her with a gentle smile. Jaina was momentarily awed by his flawless beauty, undisturbed even after waking upâbut quickly snapped out of it to apologize.
âIâm sorry, Theo. I was eating steak in my dream⊠I didnât realize it was your arm.â
âItâs fine. You didnât bite that hard.â
âNot that hard? Then why are your teeth marks so clearâŠâ
Guilt prickled at her as she looked at the deep red imprint of her bite on his arm.
âWait a minute⊠this isnât my room.â
She remembered the events of the previous night.
She had passed out from exhaustion in the carriage and remembered nothing after that. Theo mustâve carried her in.
âI wasnât sure when youâd wake up, so I didnât have a meal prepared yet.â
âGood thinking.â
She patted his head in praise and asked,
âSo what time is it now?â
âItâs one oâclock.â
ââŠWhat?â
Jaina shot up in bed.
One oâclock. Not only had she missed breakfastâlunch was almost over.
âIâm so sorry, Theo! You must be starving!â
âIâm not. Really.â
âWell I am! Letâs eat right away. Iâll go change first!â
âWait, Jainaââ
Before he could finish, Jaina had already jumped out of bed and flung open the door.
ââŠHuh?â
She froze, dumbfounded at the sight outside.
âWhat… is going on?â
The wall that shouldâve been in the hallway was gone. Beyond the corridor, she could see a lush forest and the clear blue sky. Her mind went blank.
Theorise came up behind her and draped a shawl over her shoulders.
Still reeling from the shock, Jaina stammered,
âTheo, what is⊠thisâŠ?â
Homel appeared silently and explained in Theoriseâs place.
âWhile you were both away, a dominance battle broke out between two magical beasts. They were too powerful for me to stop. Iâve set a barrier around the manor to prevent outside damage, but I couldnât prevent the destruction of the building.â
âTwo beastsâŠ?â
âCotton Candy and the Black Dragon.â
ââŠWhere are they now?â
âTheyâre in your room, My Lady. Theyâre currently under a ceasefire, so it should be safe to visit.â
Jaina immediately rushed to what remained of her roomâor where it had been.
There were no walls, no ceiling. Just ruins. She shouted,
âCotton Candy! Black Dragon!â
The two beasts turned their heads from opposite ends of the room, where they had been glaring daggers at each other. Their eyes lit up at the sight of Jaina.
âGrrr!â
âRoar!â
They answered in unison.
Overwhelmed with joy, the Black Dragon spread his massive wingsâshattering the few remaining wall fragments.
Cotton Candy took a step forward, and the already-cracked floor gave way with a loud crunch.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?! Shrink down this instant!â
At Jainaâs furious voice, the two beasts shrank immediately. Now palm-sized, they timidly shuffled over to her.
âHow long was I gone?! And you destroyed the entire building!â
âKyuâŠâ
âGroanâŠâ
Cotton Candy and the Black Dragon glared at each other. Cotton Candy gave a short nod toward the Black Dragon as if to say it was all his fault. Not backing down, the Black Dragon raised his wing to point at Cotton Candy. Cotton Candy bared its teeth.
âCotton Candy! Are you starting a fight again?â
At Jainaâs scolding, Cotton Candy lowered its head and dropped flat to the ground. Its ears and tail, which had been upright and aggressive, drooped sadly. The Black Dragon gave a low flutter of its wings.
âYou too, Black Dragon. Sit.â
âGrooâŠâ
The once-proud Black Dragon folded its wings and sat.
âSee this? You destroyed mommyâs room. Hmm?â
âKyuâŠâ
âGroanâŠâ
âCotton Candy, is this what I taught you?â
âKyu-uuuâŠâ
Cotton Candy shook its head.
âAnd you, Black Dragonâthis is how you greet me? By wrecking my room the moment you arrive? Is that okay?â
âGrrrrâŠâ
The magical beasts, capable of destroying even protected buildings, were now sitting miserably, being scolded by a regular human who couldnât even wield mana. Homel, normally composed, could only shake his head at the absurd sight.
Jaina continued to lecture the two creatures for a while. When she said sheâd stop loving them if they kept fighting like this, both looked on the verge of tears.
âYouâre sorry, right?â
âKyu, kyuuuâŠ!â
âRaaaah!â
âNow hug and make up.â
At her words, the two quickly huggedâthough they discreetly poked at each other with claws behind her back, which Jaina didnât notice.
âWell done. Cotton Candy, youâre the eldestâyou need to take care of the Black Dragon. And you, Black Dragonâlisten to Cotton Candy. Got it?â
âKyu!â
âRoar!â
They replied enthusiastically, eyes full of innocence. Finally, Jaina embraced the two who had waited for her and gently petted them.
Jaina rolled around in bed with her cute magical beasts for a while before finally sitting up.
âI promised myself Iâd stay in bed all day todayâŠâ
She didnât particularly want to do anything, but lying around was getting boring. After sleeping so much the past couple of days, she wasnât even sleepy anymore.
She stumbled over to Theoriseâs desk.
âNow that I think about itâŠâ
Peeking at his bookshelf, one book in particular stood out among the tightly packed rows. Even without opening it, she knew what it was.
She pulled out the black, blank-covered book. When she tried to open it, it wouldnât budgeâsealed shut, almost like it was glued.
âWell, that makes sense.â
âKyu?â
âRoar?â
Cotton Candy and the Black Dragon scampered over and tilted their heads. Their innocent, curious eyes made Jaina feel a little guilty.
âGuys, I swear I wasnât trying to snoop through Theoâs stuff.â
Jaina gave an awkward smile and moved to put the book backâ
Clink!
Something dropped from between the pagesâa golden key.
âHuh?â
âThat wasnât part of the original storyâŠâ
The old key was rusted in places and looked suspiciously worn. She picked it up.
âWhat is this?â
She stared at it for a long time, then began to walk as if drawn by something.
That black bookâit was Theoriseâs diary.
In the original game, if the player chose the option [Look at the bookshelf] during the first meeting, the character âJainaâ would pull out the diary. An embarrassed Theorise would try to snatch it back, and, in classic romance game fashion, a CG event would trigger when âJainaâ stumbled and fell.
Diary entries were unlockable as bonus content, usually revealing Theoriseâs obsessive and unhinged thoughts.
But there had never been a scenario where a key was hidden in the diary.
âNow I have to know.â
Jaina decided to find where the key belonged.
She tried the drawers firstâthey were all unlocked.
âOf course not. Itâs probably for some hidden door or secret room.â
A sense of adventure ignited in her.
âLetâs go! Cotton Candy, Black Dragon!â
âKyaa!â
âRoar!â
Jaina roamed every corner of the castle, trying the key on every locked door. She even opened every box and drawer in storage just in case.
But nothing matched.
The castle was bigger than she expected, and she soon tired out. She slumped down in a hallway when Ellie came rushing over.
âHeavens, My Lady! You havenât even changedâwhat are you doing in the hallway?!â
âUh, wellâŠâ
Jaina discreetly hid the key.
âCome now, get up. Look at your nightgownâitâs a mess!â
Without finding where the key fit, she was dragged back to her room.
After changing into fresh clothes Ellie brought, she was given a simple mealâfresh-baked bread with warm cheese, honeyed milk, and lightly seasoned grilled chicken breast.
It couldnât compare to the elaborate meals Homel prepared, but after wandering all morning, it tasted better than anything else.
Cotton Candy and the Black Dragon, also hungry, devoured their food.
As she ate, Jaina asked Ellie,
âEllie, have you ever seen a secret room in the castle?â
âA secret room?â
âYeah. Like a door thatâs always locked, or a basement no oneâs ever been in.â
âHmmâŠâ
Ellie closed her eyes and furrowed her brows. After thinking for a while, she tilted her head.
âNot really.â
Jainaâs face fell with disappointment.
âI seeâŠâ
âBut, My Lady, I donât know everything about the castle. There could be rooms Iâve never seen before!â
âReallyâŠ?â
âBut why the sudden interest in a secret room? Are you looking for something?â
âNo, not really. Just curious. I live here but I donât even know where everything is.â
Jaina made an excuse. Thankfully, Ellie didnât seem to suspect anything.
âI donât know about secret rooms, but I do know something else.â
Ellie lowered her voice as if sharing a secret.
âOh? What is it?â
âWellâŠâ
Ellie leaned closer, glancing around cautiously before whispering in Jainaâs ear:
âThis place was originally the site of a temple.â
âHuh?â
