CHAPTER 33
Jaina followed Asins to the monster training facility, with Levan quietly trailing behind them.
As they approached the entrance, knights raised their spears to block the path.
âUnauthorized personnel are not allowed to enter. Please present your access permit.â
Considering this was a facility where monsters were bred and trained, tight security was only natural.
Asins frowned at the knight who blocked him and voiced his displeasure.
âDo you even know who I am?â
âThere it is again. The classic, âDo you know who I am?ââ
Jaina leaned in and whispered into Asinsâs ear.
âAsins, did you forget to bring an access permit or something?â
âYeah.â
âThen do you at least have ID?â
âNope. I snuck out in the first placeâwhy would I have something like that?â
âExcuse me?â
âYou snuck out, and now you want to stroll into a royal facility with zero effort to hide your identity?â
Jaina was dumbfounded.
Asins was about to speak again, seemingly unaware of the issue. It was obvious things would escalate if this continued.
Jaina gave an awkward smile and gently tugged on Asinsâs arm.
âSorry, my little brotherâs still a bit immature. Please excuse us.â
Asins tried to shake her off, offended by the implication. But it was pointlessâhis skinny arm was no match for Jainaâs strength.
Jaina dragged Asins into a quiet alley not far from the training center.
âLet go!â
After checking that no one was around, Jaina finally released him. Asins glared at her, brows furrowed in frustration for being dragged around.
âIâm sorry for pulling you like that, Lord Asins. But there were too many eyes on us. I had no choice.â
âWhat nonsense is that?â
âLord Asins, let me ask you something. Is it okay if the royal family finds out we came here?â
âOf course not.â
âThen shouldnât we have at least disguised ourselves before coming?â
Asins responded proudly.
âIâll make sure no one talks. So whatâs the problem?â
âOh, sure. If Lord Asins says to keep quiet, obviously no one will say a word. Must be nice having that much pride.â
Could someone really have this much pride?
Jaina had a realization: Asins wasnât just childlike in appearanceâhis thinking was also immature.
He had this baseless confidence that everything would go his way just because he said so.
As a genius mage and the master of the Mage Tower whoâd lived for centuries and been endlessly praised, it wasnât too surprising he didnât care for things like compromise or realism.
âNo point explainingâitâll go right over his head.â
âLord Asins, can you use magic to change your appearance?â
âOf course. Thereâs no magic I canât use.â
âThen letâs change how we look before going to the training center.â
Asins tilted his head and asked,
âWhy should I bother doing something so annoying?â
âBecause you just said we canât let the royal family know weâre here.â
âThatâs true.â
âThen wouldnât it be better to hide our identities?â
âStill annoying.â
His blatant response left Jaina speechless. There was no reasoning with him.
âRight. Iâm dealing with an elementary schooler.â
Jaina recalled all the hours she spent watching N-Tube videos in her past life.
“Our Little Elementary Schooler Has Changed.”
It was a show about rehabilitating kids who were impossible to reason with.
The kids on that show werenât much different from the misbehaving dogs on “Dogs Arenât Bad.” In fact, sometimes she thought, âWouldnât a dog be easier to handle?â
To talk to a child, the adult had to meet them at their level.
âBut I canât treat him too much like a child either. Heâs a mentally immature old man, after all.â
In dating sims, Jaina could never stand one specific character type: the ones who looked like kids but acted like cranky old menâjust like Asins.
These characters hated having their pride injured, but if you pandered to them too much, theyâd do reckless things and create chaosâjust like Asins had done.
If you tried to scold them, theyâd push back even harder, acting like they didnât understand what the problem was. Needless to say, it tanked your affection score.
âBut who am I?â
Jaina, who had cleared the notoriously difficult dating sim âLove Is So Hard!â with no walkthroughs.
She began drawing on her memories of those videos and games to think of a way to persuade Asins.
âLord Asins, what would happen if the royal family found out we came here?â
âThat bastard Perus wouldnât sit still, thatâs for sure.â
âExactly. Youâre the great Master of the Mage Tower, so someone like Perus wouldnât dare lay a finger on you. But⊠Iâm not like you. I donât have your kind of power.â
Jaina deliberately let her shoulders sag and wore a dark expression.
As childish as Asins was, he still had a sense of responsibility as the older one. If she showed fear, he wouldnât insist on his own way.
As expected, he responded exactly as she hoped.
âThatâs why I said Iâd protect you, didnât I?â
âYes, but Lord Asins, if Perus realizes youâre with me, he might try to target me when youâre not around.â
ââŠThat bastard would absolutely do that.â
âPerus hasnât shown his full hand yet. So I think we should keep youâour trump cardâas hidden as possible. What do you think, Lord Asins?â
When making a child do something they didnât want to, it was better to ask them:
âHow do we do this?â
Rather than just ordering them.
Jaina made sure to pose it as a question.
âHmmâŠâ
Asins sighed meaningfully instead of answering, gazing at her. His narrow golden eyes seemed to pierce through her thoughts, and Jaina flinched slightly. But she soon smiled innocently and waited for his answer.
âYouâre a clever little thing.â
Asins chuckled.
âFine. Itâs annoying, but Iâll go along with you.â
Using Asinsâs magic, both Jaina and Asins changed their appearances.
Asinsâs hair, once a deep violet like the early night sky, transformed into a soft, sprouting green. His childlike form matured into that of a healthy man in his twenties. His golden eyes darkened, like ink had been stirred into them.
âSurprisingly, it suits him.â
Asins, now with his long hair tied neatly back, looked down at Jaina.
âLetâs go.â
âWaitâwhat about Levan?â
Jaina gestured to Levan, who stood quietly like a shadow.
âOh, right. That guy.â
Asins glanced at him and handed over a leather robe.
âNo oneâs going to care enough to notice the bodyguard.â
Levan pulled the robe over himself.
âWell, heâs not exactly flashy-looking anyway.â
Seeing his perfectly average face, Jaina nodded.
âAlright, letâs go.â
âYeah.â
Just as Jaina was about to set off with a light heart, Asins held out his hand. She blinked at it, confused. Asins gave her a warm, brotherly smile.
âJust in case we get separated, we should hold hands.â
ââŠWhat?â
âRight now, Iâm your big brother, remember?â
âYeah, sure⊠in theory.â
Jaina gave a forced smile and waved her hands.
âHolding hands would be inconvenient for you, I think, uh⊠Brother.â
She had a pointâAsins would have to bend over awkwardly to match her current height.
âTrue. Oh well.â
Just as Jaina sighed in relief at seeing him retract his hand, Asins suddenly lifted her by the waist.
âWah!â
Her body floated up into the air.
With one arm under her and the other around her, Asins held her close.
âWait, Lord Asinsâ!â
His golden eyesânow curved like a crescent moonâlocked with hers in the dim light.
âNot âLord Asins.â You should say, âBrother Arthur,â right? Nia.â
Jaina tried to push his face away with both hands, but it was no use.
âLetâs go, Nia.â
Asins played the perfect doting big brother. Jaina could only scream internally.
âThis is NOT what I meant when I said I wanted a disguise!â
âPlease present your access permit.â
Just like before, the knights stopped them. Asins handed over a forged permit. The seal was a bit off in shape and placement, but not enough for the knight to notice.
âAll set. For safety reasons, you may not carry weapons. Weâll hold your sword for you.â
The knight took Levanâs sword and opened the gate.
Despite Levanâs shady look with his hood pulled low, no one seemed interested in him. Thanks to that, they entered the building without issue.
âPut me down now.â
Asins gave her a gentle, brotherly look.
âNo can do. Itâs dangerous in here, Nia.â
âI can walk on my own, you know?â
âSigh⊠fine.â
He reluctantly set her down.
âThereâs no need to keep acting when no oneâs around. Is he⊠enjoying this?â
Jaina grumbled inwardly as she walked.
The hallway was quiet. Rust and mold here and there made it seem like the place wasnât very well maintained.
While Jaina looked around, Asins called from up ahead.
âHurry, Nia.â
âHow is he so fast? Or am I just slow now?â
Jaina lifted her skirt and trotted after him. Her shorter legs definitely slowed her down.
âHow did it come to this?â
Jaina thought back to everything that had happened just before they arrived.
