CHAPTER 31
âWe havenât formally hired him yet, so if you prefer someone elseâŠâ
âNo! Thatâs not what I meant.â
Jeyna hurriedly covered Theorisâs mouth as he repeated himself like a parrot, and whispered to him.
âListen, Theo. I donât plan on hiring a bodyguard. I told youâIâll be staying inside the estate. And with Lord Asins around, why do I even need a bodyguard?â
She removed her hand, allowing him to speak, but reminded him to keep his voice down so Revan inside wouldn’t hear.
âI apologize for bringing a guard without your permission. But Jeyna, since you said you wouldnât refuse Ferusâs proposal, I canât leave you alone without protection.â
Oh, right. That.
She hadnât heard back from Ferus yet, but if no word came, she’d have no choice but to meet him. So she understood why Theoris was insisting on assigning her a guard.
But why did it have to be Revan, of all people?
Ferus was unavoidable, but now Revan tooâtwo sub-route characters already. She wanted to avoid getting involved with Revan at all costs.
He hadnât officially been appointed yet. If she turned him down now, their connection would end here.
âFine. But send that man back. I want to choose my bodyguard myself, from the list you gave me.â
âUnderstood.â
âAnd donât say it so bluntly like last time! Be polite, and say it nicely. Nicely, okay?â
Theoris nodded.
She still felt uneasy, but decided to trust him. He was a noble raised in the imperial palace, after allâsurely he knew how to speak diplomatically.
Unfortunately, Jeynaâs assumption was completely wrong.
âMy wife doesnât find you acceptable. Leave.â
Iâm such a fool for trusting Theo.
âIâll speak with him myself. Wait here. Sir Knight, could you step outside with me?â
Revan nodded and followed her out. Standing stiffly with his head bowed, he was met by Jeynaâs best attempt at a gentle smile.
âSir Knight, Iâm sorry you came all the way here, but Iâm not planning to hire a guard at this time.â
Before she could even finish her sentence, Revan dropped to his knees.
âIf Iâm lacking in any way, I will fix it. Please reconsider.â
âNo, itâs not because I donât like you.â
âNo, itâs my fault entirely. I beg you, Your Grace. Please give me a chance.â
He looked up at her with dark eyes glistening faintly with moisture.
âWaitâhold on. I understand. Please stand up first.â
At her words, Revan rose immediately.
There was no way someone could look so desperate just from not being hired as a bodyguard. Something else must be going on.
âIs there a specific reason you need to be my bodyguard?â
Revan began explaining his circumstances.
He was originally a knight affiliated with the temple. In How to Love the Obsessive Male Lead, thatâs where Jeyna first met him.
His mother collected herbs in the mountains, and his father was a mercenary. Though poor, his family of fourâparents, Revan, and his younger siblingâhad been happy.
But then a tragic accident occurred: his parents were killed by a magical beast. With no education or other skills, the only work Revan could find to support his younger sibling was mercenary work.
Fortunately, he was gifted with a sword. A priest happened to notice his talent, and he was taken in as a knight under the temple. However, because he hadnât taken the official knightâs exam, he was never formally appointedâhe was essentially a contract worker.
âThe son of someone close to the priest has just joined the temple as a knight. All the other knights are formally appointed, so naturally, Iâm the one who was let go.â
Ugh⊠so that kind of thing happens here too.
A new hire with connections replaces a contract workerâjust like in the world sheâd come from.
âIf Your Grace turns me away as well⊠I truly have nowhere else to go. I beg youâplease keep me at your side.â
His eyes were filled with such sincere desperation that Jeyna couldnât bring herself to say no.
She remembered: Revanâs younger sibling was only eight. If she refused him, he and his little sibling would likely end up wandering the slums.
So this is how it turns out.
âAlright. Iâll hire you as my bodyguard.â
âThank you so much, Your Grace.â
âBut youâre not being formally appointed. I donât go out often, so during your free time, look for other work you can do.â
âAs you command.â
Jeyna only intended to use him temporarilyâuntil he found another job.
Besides, she rarely left the estate anyway. Even if he stayed, they probably wouldnât get too involved⊠or so she hoped.
âLetâs go for a walk! Cotton Candy, Poppy!â
âKyuang!â
âWoof!â
The two creatures excitedly bolted forward, thrilled to be heading out. Poppy, overflowing with energy, pulled so hard that Jeyna was practically dragged along by the leash.
âPoppy! Waitâslow down a little!â
âWoof!â
Poppy paid her no mind, wagging his massive tail wildly as he ran.
âAllow me.â
Unable to stand watching any longer, Revan stepped in and took Poppyâs leash.
âWoof! Woof, woof!â
The leash went taut, muscles bulging in Revanâs thick arm as he held firm. Poppy finally looked back.
âPoppy, I told you not to run like that.â
âKyuuk!â
Cotton Candy echoed Jeynaâs scolding, and Poppy drooped his head in shame.
But not for longâwithin a few steps, he had clearly forgotten and began speeding up again. With her strength, Jeyna had no chance against his energy, so she handed the leash back to Revan.
âSorry, Sir Revan. Poppyâs just so energeticâŠâ
âItâs no trouble.â
Revan didnât even seem strained, holding the leash with ease. Seeing his calm expression reassured Jeyna.
âCome to think of it, Sir Revan⊠what about your little sibling? If youâre stationed here full-time, whoâs looking after them?â
Temple knights could work shifts, so it hadnât been an issue. But now that heâd become her guard, heâd need to stay close at all timesâmeaning he couldnât go see his sibling.
âThe elderly neighbors agreed to watch over them while Iâm working.â
Jeyna felt uneasy, imagining his sibling waiting in someone elseâs care.
âWhy not bring them here?â
âPardon?â
âThere are plenty of spare rooms in the estate, and one more person wonât be a problem. Wouldnât it be better if you could see them more often?â
For the first time, Revanâs emotionless face brightened noticeably.
âAre you sure thatâs alright?â
âYes.â
âThank you so much, Your Grace.â
Revan bowed in heartfelt gratitude.
After returning from their walk, Jeyna immediately told Theoris she wanted Revanâs sibling brought to the estate.
Theoris sighed and said,
âThis time⊠itâs a person?â
âbut in the end, he agreed.
âH-hello⊠Your GraceâŠâ
A little girl with chestnut pigtails mumbled a greeting. Then, looking frightened, she quickly hid behind Revan. Her black eyes were filled with a sadness unbefitting a child.
âForgive her. Rina is very shyâŠâ
âItâs alright. Rina, Iâm happy to meet you.â
Jeyna smiled brightly, but Rina only lowered her head silently.
âCome, Rina. This will be your room from now on.â
Jeyna proudly opened the door.
A light green rug, pale yellow walls, curtains embroidered with cheerful floral patterns, and a fluffy bed covered in soft yellow blankets. Every vase by the window held colorful, fresh flowers. A subtle floral fragrance filled the room, and Rinaâs expression visibly brightened.
Jeyna had decorated the room herself after hearing from Revan that Rina liked flowers and the color yellow.
Seeing Rinaâs delighted face, Jeyna allowed herself a small, victorious smile.
âWhat do you think? Do you like it?â
Rina was looking around curiously, but flinched when Jeyna spoke. The smile vanished instantly, and she nodded nervously, her eyes darting anxiously toward Jeyna.
âRina, thank Her Grace.â
ââŠThank youâŠâ
Though the thanks lacked sincerity, Jeyna didnât mind.
At least she seems to like the room.
The way her face had lit up when she saw itâthat was enough.
âKyuah!â
âHuh? Cotton Candy?â
Just then, Cotton Candy appeared out of nowhere and leapt into Jeynaâs arms, making a cute sound.
âI told you not to wander off alone.â
âKyuungâŠâ
âBeing cute wonât get you out of trouble anymore.â
âKyuuk!â
Looking sullen, Cotton Candy slapped its front paws in protest. Jeyna used to give in to that pitiful act, but not anymore.
She reached out to pat it like alwaysâ
âEek!â
Rina let out a terrified scream and collapsed to the floor, face pale as a sheet. Her wide eyes, fixed on Cotton Candy, were filled with pure horror.
âA m-monsterâŠ! I hate it! I hate it!â
She curled into herself, covering her head with her arms.
âRina! Itâs okayâcalm down.â
Revan quickly embraced her and tried to soothe her, but Rina couldnât calm down easily.
Right⊠Iâd forgotten.
Rina had witnessed her parents being killed by a magical beast.
âIâm sorry, Your Grace. My sisterâŠâ
âNo, Iâm the one whoâs sorry. Revan, please take care of her.â
Jeyna quickly picked up Cotton Candy and left the room.
