Despite everything, the walk continued.
At first, Pavel had been gasping for breath just walking a little. But now, he could go a fair distance without trouble.
It was thanks to Sasha gradually increasing the walking distance to match what Pavelâs body could handle.
âThis is a path I havenât seen before. Right?â
Sashaâs eyes sparkled at the unfamiliar scenery.
When they looked back, the annex they lived in was already a tiny speck in the distance.
âWhat do you think is further in?â
As Sasha asked in an excited voice, Pavel responded not with words, but by walking forward.
They walked deeper, parting the thick canopy of leaves overhead.
Before long, a beautiful landscape unfolded before them.
Shhhâ
The wind rustled the trees, their leaves brushing against each other and making a sound like rain.
The wind passed through the green field and stirred the blooming cluster of snowdrops.
A sweet floral fragrance carried on the wind, surrounding them.
Sunlight reflected on the gently flowing stream, glittering like shattered glass.
âWow!â
Sasha clapped her hands in delight.
âI canât believe a place like this existed!â
She gushed openly, unable to hide her excitement.
âLetâs always come here for walks from now on. Itâs perfect. The smell of the flowers, everythingâitâs all so nice.â
ââŠâŠâ
âOh? Wait a sec.â
Sasha suddenly crouched by a bell-shaped flower.
She carefully picked up one that had fallen to the ground.
With a mischievous expression rare on her face, she gently blew the flower clean and tucked it behind her ear.
âHow do I look?â
She beamed with the flower tucked near her silver hair.
âŠShe looked beautiful.
That was Pavelâs honest thought. But his mouth was not so honest.
âWeird.â
âAw, really?â
Sasha tilted her head, her shimmering silver hair sliding down with the movement.
Pavel found himself wondering what it would feel like to run his hand through it.
He imagined the soft strands slipping between his fingers like water.
âReally weird?â
Startled by his own wandering thoughts, Pavel quickly averted his gaze and nodded.
âHmph.â
Sasha scrunched her nose and removed the flower from her ear.
âBut it really suited herâŠâ
As the thought surfaced, Pavel shook his head vigorously.
âWhat? Did a bug fly at you?â
âNo!â
Though Sasha couldnât possibly read his thoughts, Pavel barked a sharp reply.
âGood, then.â
Unbothered by Pavelâs suspicious reaction, Sasha ran her fingers through the flower field.
âLetâs see⊠Ah, this one looks good.â
Picking the prettiest one she could find, she held it out toward Pavel.
âWant to try one too?â
âNo.â
âCome on, just once. I bet itâll look good on you.â
Sasha giggled, imagining a flower behind Pavelâs ear.
âHe already looks like a dollâif I add a flower, heâd look even prettier.â
But unaware of her thoughts, Pavel frowned.
âIs she making fun of me?â
His reply was cold.
âDo I look like Iâd do something that stupid? Get that away from me.â
He waved his handâandâ
Smack!
He accidentally struck Sashaâs hand along with the flower.
ââŠ.â
Startled by the loud sound, Pavel flinched.
He hadnât meant to hit her. He just wanted to reject the idea, not hurt her.
But intentional or not, the fact remained: Pavel had hit Sashaâs hand.
Seeing him freeze in place, Sasha quietly withdrew her hand and said:
âSorry if I upset you.â
âIââ
âThis isnât what I meantâŠâ Pavel thought, but the words wouldnât come.
He had never once apologized to anyone in his life, nor had he ever been taught to.
While he stammered, Sasha smiled softly.
âLetâs go back. If we stay too long, we might catch a cold. Itâs still chilly out.â
Turning toward the annex, she began to walk.
Behind her, Pavel followed, biting his lip in frustration.
So hard that his lips began to bleed.
Cleanliness is next to godliness.
Thanks to Sashaâs obsession with hygiene, Pavel washed his hands and feet as soon as they got back.
Scrubbing until they squeaked, he kept glancing at Sasha.
Her face was calm, with the usual gentle smile.
As if sheâd already forgotten what had happened.
But Pavel couldnât relax.
He had learned the hard way that most people hid their true feelings behind masks.
As they walked to the dining room, Pavel edged closer to her.
âShould I⊠hold her hand?â
Since they often held hands anyway, it wouldnât be strange for him to initiate it now.
But as he wrestled with the ideaâ
âCome on, Pavel. Sit down.â
They were already in the dining room.
ââŠâŠâ
Sasha, already seated and arranging the table, noticed his blank stare.
âPavel? Something wrong?â
ââŠNo.â
He frowned and sat across from her.
Soon, dinner was served. The rich aroma stirred his appetite.
âItâs pasta with Poropong mushrooms in a creamy sauce! Theyâre really rare, but we got lucky this time.â
Sasha explained proudly and urged him to eat.
But unlike usual, Pavel hesitated. He didnât pick up his utensils.
âWhatâs wrong? Does it not look good? Is it something you donât like?â
She asked gently.
ââŠâŠâ
Pavel paused.
He didnât want to eat it.
Butâhe glanced at her.
âIf I refuse, sheâll be disappointed.â
Hurting her feelings once at the snowdrop field was bad enough.
He didnât want to see her sad again.
ââŠNo.â
He finally picked up his fork, wound the pasta, and put it in his mouth.
Chewing briefly, he swallowed and continued eating in silence.
âHow is it? Good?â
ââŠYeah.â
He mumbled, glancing sideways at Sasha.
She beamed.
Pavel, overwhelmed by the brightness of her smile, lowered his head.
âEven if he doesnât say it, heâs eating quickly. He must like it.â
Sasha smiled, pleased that he was eating well.
âHeâs such a picky eaterâI was worried. But lately heâs eating everything. If this keeps up, heâll grow up healthy.â
But her smile didnât last long.
Thudâ!
âPavel!â
Before the meal ended, Pavel collapsed, his whole body covered in red blotches.
Panicked, Sasha rushed to his side.
âPavel, Pavel!â
She reached for him, then froze.
âI canât just touch him carelessly.â
In an unknown medical emergency, the wrong move could worsen things.
âStay calm.â
Taking a breath, she gently opened his mouth to check his throat.
Nothing was stuckâhe wasnât choking.
But his throat was visibly swollen.
Something was seriously wrong.
Sasha bit her lip hard enough to bleed and checked Pavel carefully.
Wheezing, convulsions, hives.
She processed his symptoms and came to a conclusion.
Whipping her head around, she scanned the table.
Mushroom pasta.
Main ingredients: milk, mushrooms, cream, onion, garlic, flour.
She had eaten it too and was fineâso the food wasnât spoiled or poisoned.
âPavel must have a food allergyâŠ!â
âIf Iâd just been more careful⊠this wouldnât have happened!â
Though Sasha remembered her past life as a doctor, it was mostly textbook knowledge now.
Since her reincarnation, sheâd only treated minor issuesânever something this urgent.
âI overestimated myself. I even forgot something this basic!â
As she blamed herself, tears welled in her eyes.
âUghâŠâ
Pavel barely opened his eyes.
âPavel! Are you awake?â
âI⊠Iâm⊠okaâyâŠâ
Struggling to breathe, he still managed a broken sentenceâ
âSo⊠donât⊠cryâŠâ
Even as he fought for air, his first instinct was to comfort her.
Sashaâs already pale face turned even whiter.
Seeing this, Pavel repeated:
âDonât⊠cryâŠâ
ââŠOkay.â
Sasha nodded slowly.
Though her eyes were still red, her tears didnât fall.
Wiping her face with her sleeve, she declared:
âPavel, donât worry. I told you Iâd make you healthy.
This time tooâIâll treat you, no matter what.â
ââŠOkay. I trust you.â
And with that, Pavel closed his eyes againâand Sasha sprang into action.
