Chapter 12Â
The next morning, I woke up early to birds chirpingâjust in time to see Dad and Arno return.
As soon as I heard the carriage had arrived, I rushed out in my pajamas.
Of course, standing at the entrance looking perfectly neat, unlike me, was CĂ©sarâalready ready to greet them.
âDid you sleep well?â
âYes. Did you sleep well too?â
I glanced down at my outfit and suddenly felt a little embarrassed.
Then the carriage door opened, and the two men stepped out.
âDad!â
âAgnĂšs!â
Dad smiled widely and hugged me tightly. His warm hand on my shoulder made me feel safe again. His familiar scent made my heart settle.
Behind him, I made eye contact with Arno.
Our sweet reunion didnât last longâhe pointed at me and silently mouthed âYouâre deadâ while making a throat-cutting gesture.
âDad, Arno just said heâs going to kill me!â
âWhat?!â
I immediately tattled, then stuck my tongue out at Arno.
âOh, come on. Youâre already bullying your sister the moment you see her again?â
âExactly, you shouldnât do that!â
I crossed my arms and added to Dadâs scolding. Arno looked like he was about to explode and grabbed the back of his neck.
âFather, AgnĂšs lied! Do you know how embarrassed I was because of that in Bellerni?â
âEmbarwashed you waws?â
âSee?! This is what Iâm talking about! She totally looks down on me.â
âArno, I think youâre confused. Of course she looks down on youâyouâre the younger sibling. Iâm more surprised you thought otherwise.â
âFather! Seriously?!â
âWhatâs the point of beating your little sister?â
âWow⊠wow⊠This is so unfair. Always me!â
After greeting me, Dad looked at César standing behind me.
Gone was the serious expression from earlierâCĂ©sar now smiled politely and spoke first.
âMarquis Franteya, itâs a pleasure. Iâm CĂ©sar Valdeon.â
âWelcome to Lucenne, Lord Valdeon. Iâm Arnoâs father and the head of House FranteyaâLeopold Franteya.â
Dad reached out to shake hands, and César responded just as politely.
âI shouldâve arrived sooner. Sorry for the delay.â
âNot at all. Iâm glad you had time to enjoy Lucenneâs scenery.â
âI appreciate your kindness. Please, letâs go inside.â
I followed Dad in, but Arno suddenly grabbed the back of my neck.
âCome with me.â
âDaaââ
Just as Dad was about to turn around, the butler conveniently started talking to him.
I stretched my hand toward Dad, silently crying for helpâbut it was no use. Arno dragged me away.
Then CĂ©sar, who was following behind, pulled me out of Arnoâs grip.
Arno gave us a sharp look, like, âWhatâs going on between you two?â
âWhat is this?â
âWhat is what?â
âYou two seem suspicious.â
âThereâs nothing weird going on. A big guy like you was bullying a small girl like me. Itâs natural for him to help me.â
âYouâre the one bullying me, you evil demon!â
âWho are you calling a demon?â
âYou. Obviously.â
Arno reached out like he was going to flick me on the head, so I quickly hid behind César.
César chuckled a little and gently stood in front of me, shielding me with his arm.
âYou two seem to have gotten very close while I was gone.â
Arno looked shocked at our interaction, then rolled his eyes and ran a hand over his face like he was too tired for this.
âUgh, whatever. You both go away.â
Then he slammed his bedroom door.
âAgnĂšs, do you enjoy teasing Arno?â
âItâs more like a habit now.â
âA habit?â
âYeah. If we donât fight, thatâs the weird part.â
âAre all siblings like this?â
âIâd say weâre actually quite classy.â
CĂ©sar kept repeating the word âclassyâ on the way back to my room, like he couldnât believe I just said that.
After a short break, I went out into the garden. Sophia came rushing after me and placed a hat on my head.
âI thought you said summer gardens are best enjoyed from a window. Whatâs with the sudden change?â
âItâs for Arno.â
I carefully picked the prettiest geranium.
âAre you going to hit him with it?â
âMaybe something with thorns would be better,â Sophia suggested carefully.
âIf I wanted to hit him, Iâd just grab a stick and whack him. Why would I bother with flowers?â
I returned to my room, gathered the flowers into a bouquet, and went to Arnoâs room. He was asleepâhe mustâve been really tired.
I sat quietly on the couch, waiting for him to wake up, when I noticed a strange blueprint on the table.
It looked like a weaponâor at least not something for daily life. Was this the thing CĂ©sar wanted to ask Dad about?
Lucenne sits on a large iron mineâabout 60% of the Empireâs iron comes from here.
If you need iron for weapons, maybe thatâs why heâs trying to get close to our family?
I started looking through the papers more carefully when I heard rustling from the bed.
Arno slowly opened his unfocused eyes.
ââŠAgnĂšs?â
He was still half-asleep.
ââŠIs this my room?â
Yup, still dreaming. He didnât even know where he was.
âYes, itâs your room.â
âWhat are you doing here?â
I walked closer, and he sat up, rubbing his eyes.
âCame to see you.â
âHiding behind Valdeon and now you show up? Why?â
He raised his eyebrow and asked in a grumpy voice. Was he⊠sulking about that? Heâs not a kid!
I handed him the bouquet without saying anything. His face softened for a moment but quickly returned to neutral when he saw me watching.
Too late, I already saw that smile. Youâre too easy to read.
âWhatâs this about?â
âYou like flowers, right?â
âYeah, but why are you giving me something I like?â
âBecauseâŠâ
âBecause?â
âWellâŠâ
âIf youâre going to give someone a gift, shouldnât you start by explaining why?â
He lowered his voice like he was being strict. Canât he just say thank you?
ââŠFine.â
After a moment of silence, I finally mumbled:
âSorry for lying.â
He smiled a little and took the bouquet.
âWhy did you go that farâeven faking a letter? If youâd just said you didnât want to go to Bellerni, I wouldnât have forced you.â
âI didnât not want to go!â
âThen why?â
âBecause I wanted you to go. To make up with Joel.â
âAgnĂšs, from Joelâs point of view, I wasnât even invited. And I showed up, unannounced. It was super awkward.â
Honestly, I hadnât thought it through. I just wanted the problem solved quickly. But now I realized Iâd been rude to both of them.
âI made a mistake.â
âYou know you messed up?â
âI even picked flowers in the hot sun to say sorry.â
âNext time, just be honest and ask for what you want. Got it?â
âGot it.â
âGood. Since youâre apologizing properly, hereââ
Arno opened a drawer and took out that box of chocolates from last time. My eyes widened as he handed it to me.
âWow, thanks, Arno!â
âYou only call me that when you want something.â
I quickly untied the ribbon, opened the box, and was about to eat when I offered him one.
âNo, you eat it.â
So I popped it into my mouth right away.
Yup, this was it. Iâd been craving this taste while studyingâso smooth and melty, different from other chocolates.
âTaste good?â
âSo good! Canât we hire that pastry chef to come live here?â
âWhy would someone doing great in the capital move to the countryside and work under someone else?â
ââŠTrue.â
Yeah, made sense. I gave up quickly.
âYour legâs all better?â
âYup! Totally fine now.â
âSo that was fake too, huh?â
âNo! That part really hurt.â
âAgnĂšs, you need to learn from the story of the boy who cried wolf.â
âAll those lies were because I caredâŠâ
I whispered softly while eating chocolate, and Arno kept scolding me.
I really like it thank-you đđđđđđ€©đâ€ïžđđđ„łđ€
