Chapter 28
The place Caesar was led to was the backyard where the chicken coop was located.
“Did you see Sophinia around here? There’s nothing but the chicken coop here. Didn’t you think that was strange?”
Caesar asked Drew, who was walking ahead of him.
“Th-that’s right. I thought it was odd too. I wondered why a small child would come over here.”
“Then, why didn’t you just call out to her and tell her? You could have said there’s nothing here but the chicken coop. Why didn’t you tell her?”
Caesar saw through Drew’s lie and pressed her further.
“Um, well, that’s…”
(What should I do… What excuse can I possibly give? More importantly, if that brat tells Caesar that I made her clean the chicken coop… he’ll hate me…!)
Drew was desperately thinking of a way to get out of this situation.
“Drew. Are you listening to my question?”
Just as Caesar asked again, because Drew wasn’t answering his question…
“Kyaaaaaaaah! Stay away from me!”
A scream echoed across the area, causing the maids’ shoulders to jerk up in surprise.
“That scream…! Lady Sophinia!”
Caesar, who was the first to react to the scream, broke into a run towards the chicken coop.
The maids, their faces pale, chased after him.
“Lady Sophinia!”
Calling Sophinia’s name, Caesar reached the chicken coop and his eyes widened in shock.
Sophinia was inside the chicken coop, being attacked by the chickens.
The chickens were flapping their wings while making threatening noises and chasing Sophinia around.
“Stop it! Don’t come near me! Kyah!”
Sophinia was swinging a broom around and screaming in terror.
“Lady Sophinia! I’ll save you right now!”
Caesar opened the coop door and rushed over to Sophinia, who was being attacked by the chickens.
“Ah! Caesar!”
Caesar scooped up Sophinia, whose eyes were filled with tears of fear, and hurriedly ran back towards the door. The chickens chased after them, and the maids shrieked.
“Watch out!”
“Caesar!”
“Hurry, hurry!”
“They’re going to catch up!”
As soon as Caesar ran out of the chicken coop, he shouted.
“Close the door, now!”
“O-okay!”
“Shoo!”
“Don’t come over here!”
The maids managed to close the door amidst all their shrieking and commotion.
CLANG!
As the wire mesh door shut, the angry chickens squawked and flapped their wings noisily.
“Lady Sophinia, are you alright?”
Caesar asked Sophinia, whom he was still holding.
“Caesar… I was so scared…”
Everyone gasped when they saw Sophinia’s face as she looked up. Her hair was a mess, and her clothes and body were filthy. Furthermore, her cheeks and palms had wounds, probably from being pecked by the chickens, and they were bleeding. Her eyes were filled with tears, looking like they were about to spill over at any moment.
“Lady Sophinia… You poor thing… To end up in such a terrible state…”
Caesar gritted his teeth.
“Th-that can’t be…!”
Perhaps finally realizing the gravity of the situation, Drew’s voice trembled.
“Drew… You…!”
Caesar glared at Drew with eyes full of anger, but…
“Ow… it hurts…”
He was snapped back to his senses by Sophinia’s voice complaining of pain.
“Lady Sophinia, are you okay? Let’s go to the infirmary immediately and have you treated!”
Caesar held Sophinia securely in his arms and looked over at the four maids.
“I don’t know what you were thinking… but I will be reporting this.”
After saying just that, Caesar ran off, still carrying Sophinia.
The four of them watched his retreating back for a little while…
“Hey! Drew! What have you done?!”
“You made Caesar angry because of you!”
“We’re finished… What are we going to do?!”
The three of them began to harshly blame Drew.
“W-well, I didn’t think it would turn out like that either! Besides, you guys didn’t stop me either! Don’t put all the blame on me!”
“What did you say?!”
“Hah!?”
“Don’t mess with us!”
While arguing intensely, the four of them thought the same thing:
Just who is that girl that Caesar cares so much about…? —
