Episode 40Â
In his mind, Frederic kept remembering two very different sides of Delphine: the frightened girl in the Dark Forest, and the same girl who had bravely jumped in front of the Cermen and the spirit fire to protect him.
âSheâs such a scaredy-cat⊠so how did she run toward the Cermen like that? Itâs so strange.â
But the image that stuck in Fredericâs heart the most was when she was drunk, begging him not to fire her.
Frederic knew that expression well. It was the look of someone desperate. Someone lost and overwhelmed when life suddenly changes and they donât know what to do.
It was the face of a child whoâd lost their way. The face of a child whoâd lost their parents.
It was the same face Frederic saw in the mirror every day after he lost his own parents.
Frederic understood what Delphine mustâve felt at that moment. Right now, he was her only hopeâher only safety net.
ââŠâŠâ
Frederic recalled his own lowest point in life. With an unreadable expression, he sprayed cologne on his neck.
Suddenly, he remembered a conversation he had with his mother.
â
âMom, whatâs this necklace?â
âMy baby! This is a pearl necklace blessed by the Sea God.â
âWow! So what does it do?â
âThe Sea God will protect you.â
âYou must really like this necklace, huh?â
âWhy do you say that?â
âBecause you always wear it.â
âOne day, Iâll give it to you, Frederic.â
âReally?!â
âAnd when I do, you should give it to someone you want to protect.â
âIs that someone I love?â
âHmm, maybe. Or maybe not. When you grow up, youâll understand. Sometimes the feeling of wanting to protect someone⊠and the feeling of love⊠arenât the same.â
â
Frederic capped the cologne bottle and placed it back on the shelf.
Delphineâs face briefly flashed through his mindâthen faded away like sand slipping through fingers.
âI donât love her⊠but I keep thinking about her. And I want to protect herâŠâ
When Frederic entered the Salon de Pieque, people inside started glancing at him.
âWho is that guy? Heâs really handsome.â
âHe was living in Shairo all this time? Where was he hiding?â
âWait, thatâs Frederic? Frederic Peredy?â
âI thought heâd be super weird since he never goes out, but he looks like a sculpture!â
The women kept stealing glances at him. Some even turned their heads fully just to admire his face.
Frederic ignored the stares and walked straight to where Charlier was sitting.
âCharlier.â
âOh, youâre here?â
Charlier didnât even look up from the menu, giving only a half-hearted greeting.
âThe desserts here suck. I knew itânothing beats the Salon de Chat in Shairo. Though, even that place isnât that impressive compared to salons in the Empire.â
ââŠâŠâ
âBut then again, youâre not a dukeâs heir, right? So this is the best we can do.â
Charlier glanced at Frederic and gave a teasing smile, her eyes squinting in amusement.
âYouâre not mad, right? You know Iâm joking, Frederic.â
âYeah, Iâm not mad. I know, Charlier.â
Frederic nodded and looked at the menu.
âI was thinking of ordering the Ă©clair and crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e. Do you want anything else?â
âCrĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e? But you love Ă©clairs. Youâre not getting one for yourself?â
âI want to try something different.â
Frederic smoothly called the server and placed their orderâtwo desserts and a pot of hot tea.
As they chatted casually, the desserts and tea arrived.
Click.
Charlier took a sip of tea, then cut a small piece of the éclair and popped it into her mouth.
âMmm. Disappointing. Definitely not as good as the Salon de Chat. Oh right! Youâve never tried their Ă©clair, have you?â
âI have.â
Charlier looked surprised.
âHow? Only noble families are allowed in there.â
âDelphine brought me one.â
âDel⊠phineâŠ?â
ââŠâŠâ
âHow did sheâŠ?â
Charlierâs face froze. Frederic didnât really want to talk about Delphine in front of Charlier. But lately, his entire life seemed filled with moments spent with her.
So he told her the story about how Delphine went to the Salon de Chat to buy him an éclair.
When he finished, Charlier gave a crooked smirk.
âSheâs so weird, that girl. You know, Frederic? People in high society are saying sheâs not mentally all there.â
ââŠâŠâ
âShe broke off her engagement with Leo, left the Flerin family on her own⊠And hearing what you just said? I think sheâs actually lost it! Haha!â
Charlier laughed like it was hilarious.
ââŠâŠâ
Frederic said nothing.
Normally, this was the moment he liked Charlier the mostâwhen she laughed. But today, she didnât seem beautiful at all.
âAnyway, Frederic, I have a favor to ask.â
Charlier reached her hand toward his on the table. When Frederic lightly touched it, she quickly pulled it away.
âNot in public! People will gossip.â
ââŠâŠâ
She lowered her voice.
âMy favor is thisâkick that girl, Delphine, out of your house.â
Fredericâs expression went cold. Charlier didnât notice and just kept going.
âSheâs in a pathetic spot right now. Got kicked out of her family, broke off her engagement⊠sheâs only clinging to your house because itâs all she has left. I hate it. Why should she rely on your family? Just fire her already.â
ââŠâŠâ
After a moment, Frederic spoke.
âIf I fire her now, she has nowhere to go.â
His voice was as cold as a winter night. Still, Charlier didnât pick up on it and even laughed.
âExactly! Thatâs what makes it funny, Frederic! Haha! A noble lady with nowhere to go. Isnât that hilarious? High society will go nuts over it!â
ââŠâŠâ
Fredericâs heart went cold. He knew Charlier had changed over the years. But part of him wonderedâmaybe she never changed at all.
âWas this how she felt when she cut ties with me six years ago?â
Frederic looked quietly at her face. Only then did Charlier notice how serious things had become. Her smile vanished.
âWh-What? I was joking! Just kidding!â
âCharlier. I donât like talking about other girls when Iâm with you.â
âB-But youâll still fire Delphine, right? For me? Please?â
âCharlier.â
Fredericâs voice sank.
âDo you remember when my parents died?â
âYeah, of course. Why bring that up now? That was hard for me tooâlosing my paââ
âIâm not trying to talk about us back then. What I remember⊠is how people turned cold. When my parents were alive, everyone acted nice to me. But when I really needed someone, they all turned their backs on me.â
ââŠâŠâ
Charlier went silent.
âI donât want to be like those people.â
ââŠBut I donât like it! I donât want that girl in your house!â
She threw a small tantrum, frustrated.
Frederic didnât respond. He just took a bite of the crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e. It tasted good, but not as good as the one Delphine had brought him.
âCharlier, I want to give you whatever you want. Thatâs how important you are to me. But letâs stop this talk. This has nothing to do with you and me.â
ââŠâŠâ
Charlier looked upset. She slammed her spoon down on the table and crossed her arms. Then she loudly muttered so Frederic could hear:
âWhat even are we? Someone might think weâre actually something special.â
ââŠâŠâ
Frederic stayed silent. He knew from experience that it was best to leave her alone when she was angry.
Charlier clenched her teeth and glared at the éclair, still mostly untouched.
âUgh, so annoying. Frederic acts all high and mighty now that heâs rich. I liked the old Frederic betterâsweet, soft-hearted, and easy to control. Well⊠not like Iâd be hanging out with him now if he werenât rich.â
Charlier left the Salon de Pieque and got into her carriage.
âSalon de Chat.â
She gave the next destination to the coachman and climbed in. It was time to see Leo.
âI wonder what Leo looks like now?â
A smile curled on her lips.
Everyone knew Delphine Flerin had rejected Leoâs proposal.
âWill Leo be sad? Or mad? Maybe heâll just ignore it to protect his pride. Heâs like me that way. Thatâs why we get along so well. Hehe.â
This turn of events was perfect for Charlier. Now Leo didnât have many choices left. Among the noble daughters in Shairo who were of marrying age, only two were leftâher and Delphine.
âIf I wait just one more year, maybe Leo will propose to me.â
Charlier started humming to herself.
Compared to a prince, a dukeâs heir like Leo didnât exactly impress her, but for now, he wasnât a bad catch.
Neigh!
The horse neighed and the coachman called out.
âYoung Lady Charlier, weâve arrived.â
Wearing a luxurious fur coat, Charlier stepped out of the carriage. The manager of the Salon de Chat rushed over to greet her.
I can’t believe she actually asked for that
