Episode 28 â Ropal Wizard Association
Date: 2023.11.28
Leonard had a strong sense that claiming Cordelia as his disciple would only drag him into some major hassle.
âThat? Really? What do you mean?â
Leonard’s eyes narrowed sharply. Sensing his shift in mood, Cordelia quickly added,
âI just meant… if people found out you’re my master, they’d probably get jealous.â
âHmph.â
Baron chuckled and picked up where she left off.
âTo sum it up: Maximilian is trying to shut down Leonardâs laboratory, and you, Cordelia, have to stop him.â
âMe? Uh, how?â
Cordelia almost blurted out Why me?, but swallowed the question when she saw Leonardâs wide-eyed glare.
âI told you before. When a wizard dies, they pass their heart to their disciple.â
âYes, I remember.â
âThat âheartâ can mean a lot of things. But symbolically, it also refers to the laboratory. For a wizard, their lab is everythingâitâs their life.â
âOhh⊠so itâs really important.â
âIt is. And Leonard has never had a disciple before. Despite all the achievements and priceless artifacts inside, no one can enter his lab except him.â
âIf no one can enter, then Maximilian canât get in either, right?â
âThatâs true. But you can seal the door. Since Leonard has no official disciple and Maximilian is his only blood relative, you have the authority to shut it permanently.â
âSo⊠could you just go back and open it later?â
âAre you dumb? âSealingâ it doesnât mean just closing and locking it. It means permanently sealing it shut. No way to reopen it.â
After Belluceâs blunt clarification, Cordelia finally realized why they were making such a big deal.
There was something important in that lab. Maximilian was trying to destroy itâand Cordelia had to stop him.
âAlright. What do I need to do?â
âItâs simple. Just go to the Ropal Wizard Association and show them this seal to prove youâre Leonardâs disciple.â
âThatâs it? Sounds easy.â
âThen head into my lab and retrieve a few things I need. Iâll make a list.â
âOkay.â
It didnât sound as dangerous as sheâd feared. She wasnât infiltrating enemy territory, just popping into a lab and grabbing a few items. Cordelia nodded, relieved.
âOh, and if you run into Maximilian, run. Smartly.â
âOkayâwait, why would I even meet that guy?â
âYou might. Once people find out youâre Leonardâs disciple, theyâll swarm you like bees. Maximilian will be among them for sure.â
âUgh!â
Cordelia imagined Maximilian as some kind of demon or monster. Honestly, that wasnât far offâheâd dug up her motherâs grave and murdered her brother.
She trembled and shook her head.
âN-no, then I wonât go. I canât. I wonât!â
âI didnât ask for your opinion. Not going isnât an option.â
âCanât Baron go instead? Or just retrieve the important stuff now?â
âOh, did I not mention?â
âWhat?â
That warm smile of Baronâs always gave her a bad feeling.
âIâve been excommunicated. I canât enter the Ropal Wizard Association.â
âWhat? Suddenly? Youâre pretending to be excommunicated just to get out of this, arenât you?â
Cordelia squinted suspiciously. But Baron just laughed and shook his head.
âHaha. I was excommunicated before Lady Cordelia was even born.â
His serious tone made it hard to doubt him. Besides, sheâd heard before that excommunication for a wizard was essentially a death sentenceâno one joked about that.
âYou donât have to worry too much about running into Maximilian. With so many eyes around, he wonât harm you directly.â
âSo, he could still harm me indirectlyâŠ?â
âHehe. Well.â
Baron laughed but gave no answer. Cordeliaâs face went pale.
Now she understood: she was the only one who could enter the association. But would she be able to retrieve the items safely?
Just then, Belluce pointed her chin at the man lying on the floor and asked,
âWhat should we do with him?â
âNo need to interrogate. Take care of it.â
âYes, my lord.â
Cordelia instinctively squeezed her eyes shut. She heard bones snapâand the faint breathing stopped.
âYou were lucky. If Belluce hadnât intercepted that note, you wouldâve been killed.â
âHmm. Letâs wait and see.â
While Baron sighed with relief, Leonard muttered something she couldnât quite catch.
The group changed course toward the Wilarth Archipelago, where the Ropal Wizard Association was located. Luckily, it was en route to Delonaâs territory, so they didnât have to backtrack.
âAt this pace, weâll reach Lande in two days. Iâll ditch the carriage and get us boat tickets when we arrive.â
âBy boat? Oh, rightâwe need to cross the sea to reach Wilarth.â
âExactly. Itâs not far. Just a one-day boat ride from Lande.â
âHuh. Closer than I thought.â
The sea.
Cordelia suddenly felt a tingle of excitement. Sheâd lived in Vasquez all her life, and even when she married, she only moved as far as Abrams, nearby. Sheâd never seen the ocean.
Books described it as a vast, endless blue lake. But what would it look like in person?
With the carriage window slightly cracked, she could almost smell the salty breeze.
âAre you even listening?â
âHmm? What?â
Leonard gave her a look. He clearly noticed she was spacing out.
âYouâve come a long way, my student. Daydreaming in class now, are we?â
âOh, come on. Except for when I eat and sleep, Iâm always in class. A little daydreaming shouldnât hurt. Donât be stingy with your mercy.â
Cordelia pouted.
âFocus. We need to reach Lopal soon.â
âWhy?â
âSo you can witness firsthand how honored you are to be my student. Everyone will envy youââ
âAh yes, yes. Iâm forever moved by the grace of my beloved Master.â
âHmph. Iâll let that sarcasm slide. Weâre almost there anyway. Did you memorize the list I gave you?â
âYup. Lancelâs Last Flower, Saintâs Tears, and Red Dragonâs Breath. Even the names sound legendary.â
âThey are legendary. Each one is a priceless relic.â
Cordelia shruggedâshe didnât think much of them. But in reality, even a single one of those items would be classified as a national treasure.
âTo open the lab, plug this into the door and solve the riddle. The answer is: the red flower.â
He handed her an old key. Cordelia took it and tucked it carefully into her inner pocket.
âWhere exactly is your lab?â
âAsk anyone in the Associationâtheyâll point you to it.â
âOh wow. Sounds famous.â
âOne last thingâvery important.â
âYes?â
âDonât trust anyone there. No matter what they say. Theyâll smile to your face and stab you in the back.â
Cordelia was about to ask what kind of place the Magic Association was to deserve such warningâwhen the carriage came to a sudden halt.
âWah!â
She tumbled forward, crashing to the floor. Lottie, asleep on the ground, woke up and rolled with her. Leonard, seated across from her, looked down with an unimpressed expression.
âWhat are you doing?â
âGeez! When someone falls, youâre supposed to ask if theyâre okay!â
âYou donât look okay, so why bother asking?â
âUgh! Master, youâre so mean!â
âI apologize. Are you hurt?â
Baronâs voice came from outside the carriage.
âWhatâs going on?â
âThereâs an Elfenbaum banner ahead.â
âElfenbaum? That Elfenbaum?â
Cordelia instantly forgot her pain and scrambled up. She stuck her head out the window.
The Elfenbaums were a family rivaling the Attilasâone of the Eight Sacred Houses.
They were among the most powerful bloodlines in all of Ershe, having produced five kings and countless queens.
âWhere? Where?!â
âYou canât see it yet⊠ah, there it is.â
The Baron mustâve had amazing eyesight. At first Cordelia could only make out vague shapesâbut soon, the black tiger insignia came into view.
Her eyes sparkled.
âItâs real! Thatâs the real Elfenbaum!â
âHah. And Iâm from the Attila house.â
âRight. And Iâm from Vasquez.â
Cordelia ignored Leonard and leaned farther out the window, trying to catch a good look at the approaching nobles.
Another reason Elfenbaums were famous: their legendary beauty. Curious about the rumors, Cordelia stretched her neck even further.
âStay still. Thatâs the perfect angle for someone to lop your head off.â
Belluce grumbled beside her. Cordelia quickly pulled her neck back. Then Baron turned to Leonard and asked,
âWhat should we do? If we keep moving, weâll likely run into them.â
