~Chapter 38~
The one speaking to her was a woman about Lovelaceās age. She had wavy brown hair falling down her shoulders, stood proudly, and looked Lovelace up and down. It felt like she was evaluating her.
āWho are you?ā
āGarri Handrake.ā
The woman only said her name and lifted her chin.
Ah, Lovelace remembered seeing her earlier at the entrance.
Recognizing Garri, Lovelace gave a slight nod and tried to pass by.
āHey.ā
Garri called after her.
āWhy?ā
āWhat do you mean, why? They say you lost your memory, but it seems you lost your manners too. Iām the only daughter of the Handrake family. A Princess of the Empire.ā
Lovelace wondered who was higher rankedāa Count or a Princess. Garriās attitude made it seem like she outranked Lovelace. But in the novel Lovelace knew, Counts and Princesses werenāt really compared.
In any case, Lovelace had no intention of getting involved with Garri. She certainly had no thought of romance.
āAlright then, Lady Princess. Enjoy the banquet.ā
She waved lightly and began to leave, but Garri chased after her.
āLetās talk.ā
āYouāre asking me for a favor, then?ā
Lovelace stepped closer.
āYou want to talk to me, right? Thatās a request.ā
Garri frowned, as if confused.
āWhen you ask for something, you should do it politely. Right now it sounds like youāre picking a fight.ā
Lovelace kindly explained. Normally she would have just ignored this, but since her soul was twenty-five years old even if her body wasnāt, she thought she should act like an adult.
āIāve become such a nag,āĀ she thought, regretting it immediately.
Garri smirked.
āIf it sounded like I was picking a fight, then I made myself clear. IĀ amĀ picking a fight.ā
āā¦What?ā
āDo we have some history? Sorry, I lost my memories. If I wronged you in the past, Iāll apologize. Otherwise, excuse me.ā
āThereās no history.ā
Lovelaceās eyes narrowed.
āWeāve never met before. This is our first time.ā
āThen why are you picking a fightā¦?ā
āAre you dating Sir Larvihan?ā
Lovelace paused. Ah, so thatās what this was about. She pieced together Garriās attitude, their words, and Larvihan. The answer was obvious.
āYou like Larvihan.ā
āWhat woman wouldnāt?ā
She had to admit it. Larvihan was handsomeāespecially tonight in his formal suit. His dangerous eyes made the neat attire even more alluring.
A man who looked good in anything now looked even more strikingāno wonder women lost their composure around him.
Garri looked annoyed under Lovelaceās steady stare.
āDo you have something to say?ā
So she picks a fight and then asksĀ herĀ if she has something to say? Lovelace didnāt bother replying. She simply waited. Jealous people always made mistakesāand when Garri slipped, Lovelace would strike back.
āI asked, what is your relationship with Sir Larvihan?ā
What could she say? Engaged? Kissed? Slept in the same bed? All true, yet none defined them.
Just then, a voice cut in.
āSheās my fiancĆ©e.ā
Larvihan appeared, placing a hand on Lovelaceās waist. Garri didnāt flinch even at his arrival.
āThen tell me, is there no chance youāll change your mind?ā
āThere isnāt.ā
Larvihanās reply was sharp and firm.
Garri pressed again. āPlease reconsider.ā
Larvihan turned to Lovelace.
āShe asks me to reconsider, Rey. What do you think?ā
So he could answer firmly a moment ago, but now he pushed the absurd request onto her. Typical Larvihan.
āLady Princess, thatās very rude.ā
Lovelace tried to be patient. Garri scoffed, testing her restraint. Lovelace felt her temper fraying.
She sighed.
āLarvihan, step aside a moment. Noābetter if I step out. Lady Garri, shall we talk?ā
There were too many eyes at the banquet, and she needed to protect her reputation. She couldnāt afford a scandal over something so petty.
āA love triangle at a banquet? Really, what am I doing with my life?ā
āFine. Letās talk.ā
Garri followed her out. Guests whispered as they left.
āIsnāt that Lady Handrake? She usually ignores these parties.ā
āLooks like sheās interested in Countess Harmelda.ā
āNo, itās the Duke Handrakeās order. Everyone knows sheās his puppet.ā
The gossip was loud, but Garri walked on, unconcerned. Lovelace decided to hold her tongue until they reached a quieter place.
āThis should do.ā
She pulled her shawl tight. Garri also closed her jacket against the chilly wind.
It was almost comicalātwo women about to duel in words, but both shivering in the cold.
āIām serious. I decided long ago that I would be Sir Larvihanās bride. I suit him better than you do.ā
Garri spoke smoothly, clearly rehearsed. Her youthful face was firm with determination.
Lovelaceās blue eyes studied her silently. Was she serious? Or delusional?
āWhy the sudden casual tone?ā
āWhen two women fight over a man, why bother with formality? Itās a mud fight anyway.ā
Lovelace was speechless. She didnāt even feel the urge to reply.
āKnow your place.ā
Garri smirked, thinking she had the upper hand. But Lovelace stepped forward, her shadow falling over Garriāwho was smaller by a head.
āThe one who doesnāt know her place⦠is you.ā
Her smile resembled Larvihanās own mischievous grin.
āIām the Empireās only Princessā¦ā
āAnd Iām the Empireās only female Count.ā
āYour title will vanish once you marry. But Iāll always be a Princess, as long as my father lives.ā
āWrong. The law changed. Married or not, Iāll remain Count of Harmelda.ā
Garriās eyes widened. She hadnāt read the news lately and missed this. She cursed her own laziness.
āEven so, I suit Larvihan more. Youāre too busy running your estate. I have noneāso I can stand by his side.ā
āIt just sounds like youāre a landless Princess with nothing to your name.ā
Garri clenched her fists, furious. Lovelace knew she had already won. Childish as it was, victory was still sweet.
āMy father is Duke Handrake!ā
āSo your only asset is your father? You keep bringing him upānow Iām curious. What exactly does he do?ā
Garri gasped. Someone in the Empire not knowing her father? Impossible.
āI lost my memory,ā Lovelace said smoothly, building her excuse.
Garri sighed deeply. āFine, Iāll explain. My father is head of the Handrake family, one of the three great dukedoms. Heās a Grand Magician, one of the deputy masters of the Mage Tower.ā
Handrake⦠Lovelace repeated the name. It felt familiar. She was sure she had read it somewhere.
Then it struck her.
āAh!ā
Garri placed her hands on her hips, proud.
āNow you see how great my father is?ā
Lovelace smiled brightly.
āOh, I remember. Heās that bastard who tried to kill Larvihan, right?ā
She was so happy to finally recall a detail of the novel that she forgotāshe had just blurted that out to his daughter.
