~Chapter 35~
After seeing Arwen off, Lovelace returned and stood before Larvihanâs bed, picturing her estate.
Specifically, her own room at Count Harmeldaâs manor.
âWhat are you doing?â
âDonât bother me, Iâm trying to teleport.â
Larvihan burst out laughing at the sight of her standing so seriously, like some great magician.
âYou think thatâll work?â
âIt worked earlier!â
When she thought of Larvihan, she ended up here. So maybe, if she thought of her estate, she could go back there.
âTeleportation is an advanced form of magic. Itâs not like moving a stream of water. Youâre folding space and time itself.â
She knew it was supposed to be impossible. But then againâ
Coming into this world in the first place was impossible too.
âIf all youâre going to say is âit wonât work,â then donât interrupt me.â
âWhy are you so desperate to leave? The banquet is in three days. You might as well rest here. Anna even said sheâs cutting her vacation short after hearing you came.â
âOh no⊠I troubled her.â
Lovelace was glad to see Anna, but she didnât want to ruin her precious holiday.
âAnyway, why wonât it work?â
âIf it were me, Iâd be asking âWhy did it work before?â The normal state is that it doesnât work.â
Larvihan gently took Lovelaceâs hand and led her away. She had focused so hard that the veins in her eyes had burst. Sitting her on the bed, he covered her eyes with his hand.
âWhy the bed when thereâs a perfectly fine sofa?â
âInstinct, I guess.â
He didnât even bother pretending embarrassment. Instead, it was Lovelaceâs neck that flushed pink.
âI need to go back to the estate. Thereâs a lot to handle.â
âYou hired people for that. More than twenty, if I recall. Every one of them capable.â
âYou even know that?â
âI know more. I even checked their family histories. No problems among them.â
Does this man have 240 hours in a day? Or was it all Maxmuelâs effort? If it was, she should treat him to steak someday. Poor man.
âStill, the lord should be thereââ
âYou neglect your promise to me, yet youâre so diligent about the estate. Rey, lords who care like you are rare.â
âI donât want to fail.â
Before she possessed Lovelace, her father had been a businessman. Once the business took off, he fell into pleasure, and the company collapsed.
Their home kept shrinking. They moved constantly. That was fine. What broke her were the suicides of her fatherâs employees.
If I fail⊠it wonât just be one or two deaths. The whole estate depends on me.
She hadnât asked for this role, but as long as she had it, she would do her best.
Seeing the seriousness in her eyes, Larvihan lost his playful tone.
âYou can work without leaving.â
He helped her up and brought her to his office.
âCount Harmelda, your paperwork isâoh, youâre here.â
Maxmuel, who had meant to tie Larvihan down with tasks, saw Lovelace instead and promptly excused himself. Another reason Larvihan liked himâquick to read the room.
Larvihan seated Lovelace at his desk and pulled a large crystal orb in front of her.
âWhatâs this?â
âA message orb. Itâs linked to Harmelda Manor. Place your hand on it and call someone.â
Like a video call?
She did as told and called Judith.
âMy lady! What happened?
Judithâs face filled the orb, so close it startled Lovelace into leaning back. Larvihan pushed her chair forward again.
âIf youâre too far, she canât see you.â
âThatâs Lord Larvihanâs mansion, isnât it?
âHow do you know?â
âThis orb only connects here. His Excellency installed it when you last visited.
Lovelace turned on Larvihan. When did he set that up without asking? Still, it was useful, so she let it go.
âSorry, I ended up here by chance. Judith, is there anything urgent?â
Judith rattled off her report. Nothing required Lovelaceâs immediate return.
âJudith, Iâll have to stay in the capital. Please handle things for me.â
She really was wasted as just a maid. Lovelace resolved to promote Judith when she got back.
âThe workâs fine, but what happened?
âI have to attend a palace banquet.â
Judith went silent. Was she upset? If so, shouldnât she have scolded her right away?
âMy lady, Iâll come to His Excellencyâs mansion right now.
âJudith?â
âLeave the work to Nora and Becky. Theyâre smart. Iâll teach them to use the orb. Please let me come.
âIsnât it far and tiring?â
âYour dress and hair! I canât trust anyone else with them. I already have plans in mind.
If she refused, Judith might burst into tears. Lovelace nodded weakly.
âIâll be there soon! Donât let anyone fit your dress before I arrive!
The orb flickered off.
âShe really loves being a maid⊠I was thinking of making her a secretary.â
âNot a good idea.â
âYouâre right.â
Lovelace agreed.
Working through the orb wasnât difficult. Soon she and her staff were calling back and forth all the time. Larvihanâs office grew noisy.
âShould I prepare you a separate office?â Maxmuel asked, handing him coffee.
âYou usually like quiet.â
True. Larvihan had always preferred silence. Even sharing a space with Maxmuel was a recent changeâever since he escaped the ice cave.
At first, even the sound of Maxmuelâs pen had driven him mad. But now he watched Lovelace chatter all day with a fond smile.
âBring Rey some coffee too. And advise her when she stumbles, but subtly.â
âShe wouldnât learn better from you directly?â
âIâve got my own work.â
âI can handle most tasks for you.â
âWill you deal with the old mages at the tower for me?â
Maxmuel clamped his mouth shut. He hated fighting mages.
âIâll go. Watch over Lovelace.â
âShouldnât I come?â
Normally, he wouldnât have asked. Larvihan was always strong. But he had lost beforeâoverwhelmed by countless enemies. Sometimes Maxmuel wondered if it had really been defeat, remembering Larvihanâs face that dayâŠ
âDonât think about nonsense. Just keep Lovelace safe. Stop Arwen or Nikolai if they show up.â
âYes, sir.â
Larvihan ruffled Lovelaceâs hair as she chattered at the orb, then left. She called after him, but he didnât answer.
Larvihan didnât go to the Mage Tower. Instead, he walked into a deep forest. The empire had two hells: the Ice Cave he had been trapped in, and the Fire Cave.
He entered the fiery cave without hesitation. Swords melted there, and without his water powers, he could feel the searing heat.
This is inconvenient. I need my strength back. But thereâs no wayâŠ
Damn it. Thatâs why he came here, to meet someone he hated more than any enemy.
âHow have you been?â
His beautiful voice echoed through the cave. At the end, a chained man lifted his head. His hair had grown so long it brushed the ground, his nails curling from their length.
âItâs been a while, Your Majesty the Former Emperor.â
Larvihanâs lips curled as the chained manâEmperor Aktoberg of the pastâstruggled to raise his head.
