Episode 10

“You’re not seriously asking someone who died and lost their memory to pay up right away, are you?”

I wasn’t saying I wouldn’t pay. But I had to survive too. I gritted my teeth thinking of Aberdeen, who had taken my body and left with the gods.

Lived a good life, did you? How can someone who took someone else’s money and died be considered good? And how am I supposed to live kindly in this situation?

With frustration and anger toward the two of them, I couldn’t even feel threatened by the man in front of me anymore. Though technically, one of them wasn’t human.

“Of course not.”

Shawn leaned back in his chair with a smile. The chair groaned under his weight, but neither of us paid it any mind.

“I just came to explain, since you seemed confused. And to hear how you plan to pay.”

He was a devil. At that moment, he looked exactly like a devil to me. Black hair, purple eyes, leaning back so confidently—he was the devil.

Well, more handsome than any devil.

“Since the engagement is canceled, technically you should pay interest on the debt.”

I thought he was done talking, but apparently not. My jaw dropped. Interest? Logic said that was fair, but my instincts were screaming at logic to shut up if it wanted to live.

“But that seemed a bit too harsh.”

Thank goodness. I sighed in relief. Logic was finally released from instinct’s grip.

Shawn chuckled at my reaction and laced his fingers together on the table. His long fingers somehow drew my attention.

I stared at his hands and suddenly asked,

“Who took the money, then?”

If money was given, someone must’ve taken it. And it didn’t seem like Aberdeen got it. If he used that money to buy this shabby house, he was either stupid or scammed.

Shawn’s expression showed he was impressed. That snapped me out of it. What does this man want? He must know I can’t repay that huge amount anytime soon.

“Your father picked it up.”

Picked it up? I looked confused, and he quickly added,

“From the bank.”

If he knows who withdrew the money from the bank, that means he has serious influence there. Or the bank staff has a crazy good memory. Probably the first.

I kept my cool and said,

“Then you should ask my father for it.”

“But your father still wants the marriage to go through.”

Ah, right. I groaned and held my head. Aberdeen said he didn’t want the marriage, but his father forced it. I really wanted to meet that man now.

“If you really hate marrying Martin, there is another option.”

Shawn suddenly spoke. Another option? I looked up. He grinned and continued,

“Luckily, the West family still has one unmarried man.”

Who? I thought of the doll-like Annette and asked carefully,

“Annette is a man?”

Shawn’s face twisted. No? Then who? I looked at him, puzzled, then jumped up in shock.

“Ew!”

You mean you and me? Are you insane? We don’t even like each other!

He looked annoyed.

“Rude.”

“You’re the rude one! Do you even like me?”

He hesitated for a moment. Aha! I didn’t miss that pause.

“And aren’t you in talks to marry the princess?”

Now that the shock faded, I remembered. Duke West and Princess Rebecca—Susan always gossiped about them. If they married, the only duke family without royal blood would finally be connected to the royal family. Wait… does that mean all nobles here are basically relatives? Ew.

“That never happened. Just gossip.”

Oh, really? I guess they do make a good gossip topic. A duke and a marriage-age princess. If I wasn’t involved, I probably would’ve gossiped too.

“If you don’t want Martin or me, then you’ll have to pay.”

He seemed annoyed by my reaction and stood up. My logic annoyingly whispered that he had a right to be offended. He was a rich duke with marriage rumors about a princess, while I was a broke baron’s daughter who literally died. Of course I seemed like the bad match.

Not to mention he’s ridiculously good-looking. Even my instincts had to admit that. I pushed both logic and instinct aside and sighed.

“I don’t know if selling a few loaves of bread will cover the debt.”

As he walked out of the kitchen, he muttered,

“At least you know.”

I held back my anger. He was right. Even if I baked and sold 100 loaves a day, I didn’t know how long it would take to repay him.

But it still made me mad. I chased after him.

“I’ll pay you back. Don’t worry.”

“Yeah, right.”

He laughed like it was impossible. My anger turned from Aberdeen’s father to the smirking Duke standing in front of me. Why do I have to clean up this mess?

“What will you do if I pay it back?”

Too late, I realized that question made no sense. But the words were already out.

“If that miracle happens—”

He turned around, crossed his arms, and looked down at me. Even while mad, he looked unbelievably handsome.

“I’ll kneel in front of you and kiss your foot.”

“Oh.”

Suddenly, all my bad thoughts disappeared. That super smug and handsome man kissing my foot? Just imagining it gave me chills.

Hands on hips, I added quickly,

“At your mansion?”

That’d be way more satisfying. But Shawn must’ve thought it was impossible, because he chuckled and said,

“If that miracle happens, I’ll throw a party.”

“Deal.”

The words slipped out. I’d make that deal any day. But then he added,

“But if you can’t pay—”

Oh right. There had to be a condition for failing too.

He looked me up and down.

“Then you marry me.”

“Ugh.”

I groaned out loud. I already couldn’t stand this man. Shawn tilted his head and asked,

“Can you do it in two months?”

The condition just got harder. Two months? Even two years might not be enough. I opened my mouth to say it was impossible, but he beat me to it.

“If you can’t, start planning the wedding.”

At that moment, I began calculating how many loaves of bread I’d need to sell daily to repay him in two months. I would do it.

Fueled by stubbornness and rage, I kept trying to calculate, but then someone knocked on the shop door.

“We’re closed!”

I yelled, but the knocking continued. My mental math was now a mess.

I glared at Shawn and walked toward the shop entrance. Didn’t they see the CLOSED sign?

But standing outside was a familiar man with several servants.

“Miss, the young master said we’re here to clean.”

It was Mr. Thompson, the butler from the West estate.

Right. I remembered Shawn telling Annette to send cleaners. I opened the door, and the West family’s staff poured in.

They bowed behind me—probably because Shawn had stepped out of the kitchen and was now behind me.

“You have until tomorrow.”

He meant he’d give me one day to think. Leaving that message, he told the butler to clean the shop and walked away.

Should I be grateful for the time? Or is it only one day?

I watched him leave with hands on my hips. He vanished in the blink of an eye.

“Lord Usher.”

What an infuriating man.

I turned around with a sigh, and the butler, waiting for instructions, spoke.

Right, cleaning.

I had thought two people would be enough, but Annette must’ve said something because she sent five. Six, counting the butler.

Good. I’d been thinking about cleaning the place but never had the courage.

I smiled and gave orders.

“Two of you clean here. Two in the kitchen. The rest, come with me.”

Might as well wash all the curtains and bedsheets too.
