Episode 13: A Sensitive Form of Address
No one knew when heâd arrived or how much heâd heard, but when Aileen looked up in shock, Lloyd quietly lowered his hand. She couldâve sworn sheâd heard him laugh â yet his expression was as calm and composed as ever. His unreadable gaze swept through the room, and when his eyes met hers, he smiled faintly â fleetingly.
âHow could you say your brother embarrasses you?â
âWhatâ! I never said that!â
âI heard it all.â
Lloyd didnât even try to hide it. Shouldnât people at least pretend they hadnât heard? Instead, his shamelessness left Aileen speechless.
Right â she shouldâve known by now just how brazen he was.
âŠOr maybe not.
Aileenâs face began to stiffen.
[You looked like you were sulking.]
[Isnât that man a bit too self-centered?]
[Well, he does think the world revolves around him â humility probably isnât his strength.]
ââŠâ
She had been talking about the Grand Duke⊠right?
âFrom where did you start listening?â
âYour little conversation?â
âYes.â
âAlmost all of it.â
Almost all of it? Or almost none? She wasnât sure, and decided it was better not to scratch an itch that might fester. She was about to change the subject whenâ
âWhat brings you here?â
It was Ethan, stepping in smoothly.
Ah, right. If she just got to the point, maybe she could send the Grand Duke away quickly. Smiling brightly, Aileen turned to him, desperate to see him off.
âCount Claudia is leaving,â Lloyd said simply.
âAhâŠâ
No one said it out loud, but the unspoken question â Shouldnât Ethan go too? â hung in the air. Aileenâs face fell.
âBrotherâŠâ
âWeâll meet again at the wedding.â
âMm.â
âYouâre not embarrassed of me, right?â
Ethan teased gently, trying to cheer her up. Aileenâs face flushed crimson.
âOf course not! Youâre just so handsome â I worry people will stare. I canât even protect you properly!â
âYouâre going to protect me?â
âOf course. I donât want to lose you.â
Her voice trembled with sincerity. The image of Ethan lying in a coffin, pale and lifeless, still haunted her. She couldnât â wouldnât â lose him again. Even if it meant wagering her one and only marriage.
âAnyone listening would think Iâm off to war,â Lloyd remarked dryly.
Startled, Aileen drew back â realizing how close theyâd become, their shoulders almost brushing. His warmth radiated through her back, impossible to ignore.
âItâs just⊠a big event. Iâm a little worried, thatâs all.â
âSure. Letâs say thatâs it.â
âIt is it!â
Annoyed at his teasing, Aileen glared and turned to Ethan.
âEthan, brotherââ
She froze. His face looked strange â conflicted, perhaps.
âWhatâs wrong?â
ââŠNothing.â
He seemed to be swallowing back words he wouldnât say, and though Aileen pressed, he offered no more.
âBrother.â
âYouâll be fine. I was worrying for nothing.â
He smiled faintly. âSee you soon, Aileen.â
He gave Lloyd a polite nod and walked down the corridor.
âNext time will be at the wedding,â Aileen thought. âPlease, let nothing happen to him.â
When he disappeared, she immediately became aware of the man still behind her. Maybe if she just ignored him, heâd go away? She shut her eyes tightly.
If I pretend not to notice, maybe heâll leave on his ownâŠ
No such luck.
She peeked one eye open â and flinched. A hand was reaching toward her, filling her vision. Lloydâs hand came to rest atop her head.
What on earth was he doing?
Before she could react, he smiled lazily.
âYouâre not angry just because I patted your head, are you?â
ââŠâ
âWhat can I say â Iâm selfish. Grew up thinking the world revolves around me. So I just do whatever I want. You have a problem with that?â
Aileenâs lips parted, but no sound came out. Heâd heard everything â her complaints, her teasing remarks â and now he was clearly letting her know. His version of playful revenge.
She slowly reached up, took his hand from her head, and lowered it. There was no point scolding him for touching her without permission when he was already acknowledging the reason.
âIâm sorry.â
Her voice was small. If she had rabbit ears, they wouldâve drooped miserably.
âI mightâve⊠complained about you a little.â
âA little?â he echoed, amused.
âItâs just that my brother worries about you. Your reputation isnât exactly stellar, and meeting you in person didnât help muchâŠâ
At least she was honest. Lloyd couldnât help but chuckle.
He raised a hand to cover his mouth â an effort to hide the smile tugging at his lips. Aileen mistook it for offense and rushed to add:
âBut itâs not like I go around judging people! I donât live in jealousy or bitterness â just⊠occasionally comment on certain individuals.â
âExcuses noted.â
Since heâd called it an excuse, she shut her mouth.
âAbout the wedding,â he began.
âYouâre not canceling it, are you? You canât â not with my brother!â
Her alarmed tone made him pause, reconsider, and then continue more slowly.
âIâll make sure your brother is safe during the ceremony.â
Aileen blinked. That was⊠not what she expected.
âReally?â
âOf course. Who would dare touch the Grand Dukeâs in-law? But Iâll assign extra knights â no Alpha will get near him.â
Her face lit up, then froze again.
âWait⊠what if one of his guards falls for him?â
Lloydâs brow twitched. He gave her a look â half disbelief, half resignation â as if thinking, She really does dote on him.
âThen Iâll staff them all with Betas. And if itâs near his heat cycle, let me know. Iâll provide a cycle stabilizer.â
âA stabilizer? Not a suppressant?â
âRight. A stabilizer.â
Aileenâs hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide.
Heâs offering a stabilizer? That canât be realâŠ
Ordinary suppressants only dulled pheromones â they couldnât stop a heat once it began. But stabilizers were different. They could halt a cycle entirely. They were nearly impossible to obtain, produced in secret, and worth a fortune even if you could find one.
And he was offering one freely? Aileenâs joy quickly turned to guilt.
âItâs too rare⊠are you sure you want to give it to my brother?â
âI wouldnât know it was rare if you hadnât told me,â he replied dryly. âSo yes, Iâll give it to him.â
There was no real choice to be made, so she nodded â then hesitated.
âBut⊠why are you being so nice to me?â
A trace of amusement flickered in his eyes. Sheâd fallen for it, only to realize it too late. He remembered when she had once asked him the same question, suspicious of his generosity.
Now that the roles were reversed, it was oddly satisfying. Watching her worry over her brother made him feel that, perhaps, it wasnât such a bad bargain after all.
âDo you⊠want something in return?â she asked carefully.
âWant something? Protecting you and your brother was the deal to begin with.â
âAhâŠâ
Aileen remembered â she had asked him to ensure their safety when they first made their contract.
âBut that was supposed to be after we divorce.â
âThen think of this as an appetizer. Or stop calling me âbrother.â Iâve heard that word far too many times today.â
He grimaced.
âIf youâd just stop saying it, Iâd consider it payment enough.â
âBrother.â
âI saidââ
âLloyd, brother!â
Lloyd fell silent. For once, he had no comeback.
