Episode 6. Just Before Getting Caught
Aileen didnât go to the conference roomâshe went to the servantsâ quarters instead. It was usually quiet there, since most servants were working in the main mansion, but a few still remained. She had to find a good place to hide if she didnât want to be seen.
Aileen knew just the spot.
âThe laundry room.â
If she hid among the bedding waiting to be washed, most people wouldnât notice her. The pleasant scent that lingered there also helped mask pheromones.
She didnât need to worry about pheromones now, but old habits guided her. As she slipped herself into the pile and tried to steady her breathing, memories of the promise between the two families came back.
The political marriage between Count Claudiaâs family and the Duke of Rihast was known to very few. It had never been publicly announcedâonly the families themselves were aware. Since the two houses rarely interacted, Aileen hadnât known about it until after her brotherâs manifestation.
After Ethan manifested, their parents remembered the engagement and kept him strictly indoors. As a dominant Omega, he was at risk of being targeted by an Alpha before the marriage could happen.
The world was divided into Alphas, Betas, and Omegasâand that wasnât a simple matter. Even a recessive Alpha could go mad with desire at the scent of an Omega. Though Ethan was a noble, caution was never wastedâthere were plenty of Alphas among the aristocracy.
Since Ethan had manifested early, he seldom left the house. Aileen, worried about him, stayed home as well. The two of them spent nearly all their time indoors, rarely going out.
âWhat must he be thinking right now?â
Would he be shocked knowing she left in the Dukeâs carriage?
As Aileen tried to imagine her brotherâs reaction, the laundry room door opened. She clamped both hands over her mouth and curled up tightly.
âStill in the meeting?â
âYeah.â
âSo long.â
âItâs all because of that outsider.â
âOutsider? Ohâyou mean the young Count Ethanâs sister?â
âCount Ethanâs sisterâŠâ
Aileenâs gaze darkened. The servants were gossiping so casually, dropping Ethanâs name as though he already belonged here. To them, Ethanâs presence in the ducal household was expectedâwhile she was nothing more than his sister.
âI donât get why they brought her here.â
âHow would we know what the nobles are thinking?â
âBut sheâs a Beta! Even if she has kids, theyâll be Betas too.â
âTrue.â
âThatâs why everyoneâs trying to convince the Duke.â
âSo should we go fetch Young Lord Ethan back? He must still be at homeâjust send a few knights andââ
âYoung Lord Ethan? How do you know?â
âI saw him.â
Aileen froze, barely daring to breathe as she listened.
âThis is a secret.â
âI know, just tell me already!â
âThey told me to walk by and pretend I was just passing, to check if anyone was inside.â
âAnd?â
âI checkedâand he was there. But they came back with the sister instead! How ridiculous is that?â
Through their conversation, Aileen exhaled shakily and closed her eyes.
âSo they knew Ethan was there after all.â
Of courseâthey were meticulous.
âYoung Lord Ethan is really beautiful,â one of them murmured dreamily.
âThat pretty? Well, he is a dominant Omega.â
âNot just pretty. Heâs angelic. Like a literal angel.â
âYouâre exaggerating. But what does it matter? They brought the sister instead. Sheâs cute, but kind of plain.â
âCompared to her brother? Not even close.â
Aileen hid her face between her knees.
Sheâd heard it all beforeâhow much plainer she looked next to her brother. Sheâd often wished she resembled him more. But when she manifested as an Omega, something in her changed.
Her brown hair and eyes shimmered faintly, as though dusted with gold, and her skin seemed to glow. Her features hadnât altered much, but her aura had. When her appearance improved, countless marriage proposals flooded in, and she eventually married one of them.
Was she happy about becoming prettier? Hardly. Aileen had never really liked her new self. She actually preferred her old appearanceâbecause back then, sheâd been happier. Even if she wasnât as beautiful as Ethan, sheâd felt content. Now, she wasnât. She feared the Duke might be disappointed by her looks and decide to replace her with Ethan.
She needed to find a way to keep his interestâor else sheâd be consumed by anxiety.
âSheâs not in her room?â
âNo, my lord.â
In the middle of the meeting, the butlerâs report made Lloydâs expression twist strangely. Heâd been wondering how to blow up the dull meetingâbut this was a delightful surprise. The others didnât share his sentiment, of course.
âShe left?â
âNo one saw her go?â
âNo one gave her permission to leave either. Tsk.â
As the old men grumbled and scolded, Lloyd hid a grin behind his hand.
They were already dissatisfied because she was a Beta; now her behavior only fueled their disdain. But Lloyd found it amusing. This was the same woman whoâd called him a bastardâsurely she wasnât so ordinary as to sit quietly forever.
He rose from his seat.
âIâll look for her myself.â
âBut, Your Grace, the meeting isnât overââ
âThen wait.â
His firm tone silenced them. If they wanted to keep meeting, they could wait until he returned.
As Lloyd left the room, his knight and aide, Sir Jeremy, followed close behind.
âYour Grace.â
âThey say no one knows where she went?â
âWeâve searched the entire manor. Sheâs nowhere to be found.â
âAny chance she fled?â
âUnlikely.â
Lloyd stopped walking and folded his arms.
âWhy do you think she left?â
âI canât guess.â
Jeremy shook his head. He wasnât one for wild assumptions.
Lloyd strode ahead again, with Jeremy a step behindâcurious how his lord seemed to know exactly where to go. He had other questions, though one in particular itched to be asked.
âMay I ask, Your Grace, why you brought her here?â
Lloyd gave him a look that said why do you care? But Jeremy pressed on, uncertain whether he was overstepping.
âWhen you said you were visiting House Claudia, I assumed you meant to bring back Young Lord Ethan. But his sister? I was honestly speechless.â
âThey hid him well,â Lloyd said.
âWho did? Who hid Young Lord Ethan?â
Jeremyâs voice grew sharp. A marriage pact existed between the two familiesâwho would dare conceal Ethan? The idea that someone had opposed his masterâs will irritated him.
âHis sister did.â
ââŠWhat?â
âShe lied straight to my faceâsaid he wasnât there. Quite convincing, really.â
âAnd soâŠ?â
âSo I brought her instead.â
ââŠPardon?â
âI brought her. I thought itâd be fun. And lookâsheâs already crawling out on her own.â
âYour GraceâŠâ
Are you insane?
Jeremy swallowed the question and followed stiffly, determined to see who could possibly keep up with this unpredictable Duke.
âWhen can I get out?â
The women whoâd come earlier were still busy working, leaving Aileen trapped. She only needed a moment to slip awayâbut time kept ticking by. She had to get back to her room soon.
âI hope no oneâs looking for meâŠâ
Sheâd come here as the Dukeâs prospective wife, but since she was just a Beta, her absence probably wouldnât even be noticed. The butler had been taking longer and longer between reports anyway.
âStill, I should stay quiet.â
She had no idea what the Duke might do. The one she knew was utterly self-centered.
Thenâthe door opened.
âYâYour Grace!â someone gasped.
The moment she heard who it was, Aileenâs heart nearly stopped.
âWhy is he hereâŠ?â
She was too shocked even to think. She drew her knees close, trembling.
âDonât mind me. Keep working,â came the manâs low voice.
There was a flurry of movement, then one of the women said, âWeâll take our leave, my lord.â Moments later, silence fell.
âMy lord, she isnât here. Shall we search elsewhere?â
Soâthey were looking for her. Aileen was certain sheâd gone pale as a sheet. The Dukeâs sudden arrival left her completely rattled.
Lloyd didnât answer.
Her heart pounded so hard she feared it would give her away.
âGo. Please⊠just go.â
âWait.â
His voice was closer than she expected. Aileen sucked in a sharp breath before clamping a hand over her mouth. Had he heard? She couldnât tell. All she could see was the pile of white linens around herâbut she could feel him, right there in front of her.
Her face drained of color as her lashes fluttered open.
