Chapter 63
Ā Come Back Home With Me
At Ruanās words, Marican set down the first-aid kit.
āGo on.ā
āAs I said earlier, Prince Diamond has returned to the capital. And from the knights I captured, Iāve learned something troublingātheyāre preparing for a rebellion.ā
A⦠rebellion?
Maricanās eyes widened in shock.
āA r-rebellion?ā
āYes. It seems Kymon Craft is plotting a revolt, using Prince Diamond as his figurehead.ā
A rebellion Does that mean war will break out in the Empire?
Maricanās face grew tense with worry.
āIf a rebellion truly begins, then youāll have to return to the capital immediately.ā
āI fear so. Unlike Diamond, Kymon is dangerous. His Highness the Crown Prince wonāt be able to withstand him alone.ā
āThen you must go without delay.ā
āI agree. It canāt be helped.ā
From the moment she heard Diamond might come seeking her, Marican had suspected this would be the end.
Yes, itās time.Ā
He has to return to where he belongs.
For three months, Ruan had stayed in Phenomenon Village, working tirelessly to earn her forgiveness.Ā
She had always known he would one day leave for the capital againābut hearing the words from his own lips brought a pang to her chest.
Once he leaves⦠I may never see him again, right?
Marican looked at his face for a long time, as if imprinting him in her eyes.
āWhen will you go?ā
āSince Diamond has already set out, I must leave as soon as possible.ā
āYou donāt mean⦠today?ā
Ruan nodded.
āSir Cassel is waiting outside, in fact.ā
āI see. Yes, in such urgent times, you must hurry. Iāll⦠Iāll pack your things then. Give me a moment.ā
Marican shot to her feet, fighting the sting of tears.Ā
But Ruanās voice rang out sharply.
āRosalineāno, my wife. Thereās no need. I brought nothing with me when I came here, so thereās nothing to pack.ā
āOh, right⦠Then this really is the end, isnāt it? Farewell, Ruan. I didnāt get to say it before, but thank you⦠for coming back to find me. For seeking my forgiveness. And⦠I⦠Iā¦ā
She had so much to say, but no words would come.Ā
Only tears blurred her eyes.
I promised myself Iād let him go calmly when the time came.Ā
And now look at meāhow pathetic.
Determined to leave the house before she embarrassed herself further, Marican turned toward the door.Ā
But Ruan moved swiftly, blocking her path.
āRosalineāmy wife. Where are you going? Iām not finished.ā
āI thought, since Sir Cassel is waiting, youād have to leave at once. So I should return home⦠RuāRuan, where are you?ā
She called out to the little dog, blinking rapidly to stop her tears.Ā
Ruan pulled her into his arms, holding her as if heād never let go.
āRuan!ā
āPlease, my wife. Hear me out. Iām not leaving you behind. I want to take you with me to the capital. But with unrest brewing, I canāt risk it yet. Thatās the only reason Iām asking you to stay here for now.ā
āRuan, I have no intention of leaving this place. And I already told youāIāve completely forgiven you. You donāt need to worry about me anymore. When I thought you were dead, I ached for you every day. But now⦠my heart is at peace. So go without worry.ā
Lowering her head, she spoke softly.Ā
But Ruan lifted her hand and pressed it to his chest.
āMy wife, look at me. Have you forgotten what I said? This heart would have stopped beating nine months ago, had it not been for you. The only reason it still beats is because of you. To be frank, I donāt care if the Empire crumbles, or who sits on the throne. If not for you, Iād have died long ago. So what does any of that matter to me?ā
He⦠doesnāt care if the Empire falls?
Marican raised her head, startled.
āThereās only one reason I go to the capital now. To protect the ducal family you must one day return to. If the Empire falls, if your aunt suffers, you will grieveāand that, I cannot allow.ā
āRuanā¦ā
His desperate gaze made her heart feel as though it would burst.
āSo please, wait here safely. I will defeat them, and when I return, Iāll take you back to the ducal house. And when that time comesācome back home with me.ā
Our home?
Marican thought of the family she had reunited with after six months apart, who had welcomed her as if not a day had passed.
Can I really⦠go back?
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Beneath her palm, pressed to his chest, she felt the strong rhythm of his heartāechoing her own.
Can I truly trust this man?Ā
What if Iām hurt againā¦?
When she tried to pull her hand away, Ruan caught it firmly.
āMy wife, until the day this heart stops, I will live only for you. So pleaseādonāt abandon me.ā
Every word rang with sincerity.
Yes⦠as Zelda said, trying to sever him from my heart is impossible.
Marican resolved, one last time, to believe in him.
āVery well, Ruan. Iāll trust you.ā
Ruan stared, hardly daring to believe, his hands tightening on her shoulders.
āTruly? Then⦠youāll return with me to the ducal house?ā
She nodded slowly.
āYes. If you come back safely, Iāll go with you.ā
āYouāve promised!ā
He pulled her into a fierce embrace, then gazed into her eyes as he pressed his lips to hers.
Smooch.
āR-Ruan!ā
āThatās my seal upon your words. You mustnāt take them back now.ā
It had been nothing more than a brief touch of lips, yet her heart pounded as if it would explode.
āYou really⦠are impossible.ā
She flushed crimson, bowing her head, while he only held her tighter, vowing never to let her slip away again.
After sealing their hearts, Ruan left reluctantly, riding for the capital with Cassel.
The next day, Marican wandered the festival with Zelda, but her thoughts were elsewhere.
āRosaline, arenāt you enjoying yourself? Youāve seemed distracted all day.ā
āOh? No, itās fun. Really. I guess Iām just tired.ā
Zeldaās face darkened as she remembered Diamond’s intrusion the night before.
āRight, I nearly forgot! That princeāor whatever he isācame here for you, didnāt he? And the Duke went to the capital. When will he return?ā
āI⦠donāt know.ā
āHmm. But Rosaline, are you sure nothing else happened yesterday?ā
āSomething else?ā
At once, Maricanās cheeks burned as she remembered the kiss.
āN-no. Nothing.ā
āStill, the Duke was unfair! Even if it was urgent, he shouldāve stayed to enjoy the whole festival.ā
Marican could not tell her about the rebellion, and guilt pricked her heart.
āNo, Zelda. Donāt blame him. It wasnāt his fault.ā
āWhoās blaming him? Iām just saying itās a shame he missed the fun.ā
āā¦Yes. It is a shame.ā
Marican also regretted that Ruan had not been able to enjoy it all.
āAnyway, the festival ends the day after tomorrow. Thereāll be a masquerade dance by the lake that night, followed by fireworks. But with the Duke gone⦠What will you do? Actually, why not take the chance to dance with someone else?ā
āA masquerade dance?ā
āYes! Itās tradition. Partners dance without knowing each otherās identity. If they connect, they reveal their masks. And⦠well, you know what comes after.ā
Marican flushed scarlet.
āZelda! What nonsense. Are you going too?ā
āOf course! When else would I get to dance with young men from all the nearby villages? And youāre coming with me.ā
āMe? I donāt knowā¦ā
The thought of dancing with anyone but Ruan unsettled her.
āNo excuses. Youāre coming. Donāt worryāno one will force you to dance.ā
A masquerade⦠fireworksā¦
She realized she had never once danced with Ruan.Ā
Their marriage had lasted only five months, and so much had happened in that time.Ā
Truthfully, she had never danced with anyone at all.
Her smile turned faintly bitter.
Memories rose: Lucianne bringing in a dance instructor, while she stood at the doorway, secretly mimicking the stepsāuntil Lucianne caught her and mocked her cruelly, joined by Penelope.Ā
She had wept in her room for days. And after that, she never tried again.
āRosaline?ā
Pulled from her thoughts by Zeldaās voice, Marican gave a strained smile.
āThe truth is⦠I canāt dance. So I donāt think I can go.ā
āWhat? Thatās impossible! A noble lady who canāt dance? Donāt tell meāwas it because of those people?ā
Since hearing the story of Penelope and Lucianne, Zelda had taken to calling them those humans.
āAfter Fatherās accident, our familyās finances were dire. Teaching me dance was the last thing on their minds.ā
Marican tried to brush it off, but Zelda only grew angrier.
āRidiculous! Just waitāwhen I get to the capital, Iāll rip their hair out myself. Anyway, forget them. Dancing isnāt as hard as you think. Iāll teach you.ā
āYou will?ā
Zelda seized her hand and pulled her to the center of the shop.Ā
She placed one hand at Maricanās waist, lifted her other, and in a deep, mock-masculine voice said,
āNow, milady, follow my lead. Arm here, hand there, left foot forward, andāone, two, one, two.ā
Marican stumbled at first, then laughed aloud at Zeldaās exaggerated voice.
āPfftāZelda, your voice!ā
āOf course! Your partner will be a man, so I must count like one. Againāone, two, one, two. Oh, heavens! Youāre more flexible than I thought.ā
āLike this?ā
When Marican tried the steps more smoothly, Zelda clapped in delight.
āIncredible! Youāre the best student Iāve ever had. If you were younger, I might propose to you myself.ā
āZelda!ā
Marican burst into laughter, the sound bubbling out of her.
āThatās it! Keep smiling while you dance. Now, once more!ā
They practiced for over an hour.
āWow⦠I never knew dancing could be so fun.ā
āI never knew youād be so talented! Whoever dances with you at the masquerade will be the luckiest man alive.ā
āThat canāt be true⦠Oh! Itās gotten so late already. Thank you, Zelda. I canāt tell you how grateful I am to have you.ā
āAnd I feel the same, Rosaline. Youāre like the little sister I always wanted. Now, all you need is a manāso keep your eyes open at the dance party.ā
āYes⦠Iāll try.ā
For the first time in a long while, Marican laughed and chatted freely, her heart a little lighter.
The typo of Marcian to Marican is killing me š
