Chapter 03
The black ironwood was burning.
Though they said black ironwood was useless as firewood since it never caught fire easily, the demonâs flame was, as expected, far stronger than any ordinary flame.
âStill, wasnât it supposed to be blue fireâŠ? Itâs not as blue as I thought.â
There was a faint bluish hue at the core of the blaze, but you wouldnât notice it unless you looked closely.
âWell, who cares about the color? As long as it burns, thatâs all that matters!â
Satisfied, I sank into the sofa and gazed at the flickering fire. The warmth spreading from the fireplace melted away the chill in my body. I wouldnât have to shiver anymore in Erelâs absurd cold.
âThereâs plenty of black ironwood around, so as long as I keep this flame going, Iâll be fine.â
âHey.â
Unlike me, who was perfectly content with the situation, the demon looked dissatisfied. But since Iâd already gotten everything I wanted from him, I didnât feel the need to humor him anymore.
âAre you still here?â
I waved my hand lazily in his direction.
âMy wish is fulfilled now, so go home.â
âGo home?â
âYes. Home. Donât demons have homes? Go back to where you came from.â
I didnât know what kind of place demons lived in, but since they looked human, their way of living probably wasnât too different either.
âHe must have a house and maybe a family too.â
But the demon frowned as if Iâd said something incomprehensible.
âYouâre the one who summoned me.â
âI did.â
âThen you have to take responsibility for me.â
âResponsibility? Why should I?â
âDonât you know what it means to call a demon by name and form a contract?â
Of course, I knew. When you call a demonâs name, they appear and grant your wish.
âIsnât that all there is to it?â
Seeing me just blink dumbly, the demon smacked his chest in frustration.
âThis contract is for life!â
ââŠWhat? For life?â
âYeah! I have to stay by your side until you die, fulfilling your wishes endlessly!â
ââŠExcuse me?â
What was he even talking about? I only wanted to light a fire in my fireplace! I thought demons just granted the wish and went back to their world. A lifelong contract? Did that mean Iâd have this thing hanging around me forever? I never signed up for such an annoying deal!
âBut youâre a demon, right? Demons are supposed to be super selfish. Why would you agree to something so disadvantageous, a lifelong contract without getting anything in return?â
At my reasonable question, the demon thumped his chest angrily.
âThatâs why we do take payment! Or we make deals with interesting humansâthose who start wars or kill people!â
But I was neither of those. Iâd spoken the demonâs true name, so he couldnât demand payment, and I wasnât doing anything remotely entertaining.
âUh, so if I wished for you to go home, would that count?â
âNo. The only way I can return to the demon realm is if you die.â
âWhich probably means he has to wait until I die naturallyâŠâ
But he was a demon. The kind who could kill a human without a flicker of remorse. Could he kill me right here and now just to go home?
While I was thinking that, the demon approached, his expression blank. He reached out and wrapped one hand around my throat. Even with the warmth in the room, his hand was chillingly cold. His grip was firm but gentleâtight enough that if he wanted, he could easily snap my neck.
Strangely, though, I didnât feel afraid.
He chuckled softly when he saw my calm eyes staring back at him.
âYou can feel it too, canât you? That I canât kill you.â
He let go of my neck and raised both hands.
âFrom the moment we formed this contract, I lost the ability to harm you. You can relax.â
âBut you could still find a way to make me die sooner. Like⊠hiring someone to kill me?â
âThen just wish that I donât do that.â
The demon pouted but then froze, tilting his head as if realizing something.
âWait⊠are you telling me how you could die faster?â
âWell, you just told me how to stop you from killing me. Seems fair.â
His eyes darted left and right before widening in horror. He clutched his head.
âDamn it! I shouldnât have said that!â
âToo late.â
I grinned and quickly made my wish.
âYou canât kill meâdirectly or indirectly. I donât want to die.â
It was a hard-earned second life, even if only inside a novel.
âBesides, I was reborn as a pampered noble! I deserve to enjoy some luxury before I die!â
The only problem was this troublesome demon.
âThis is a disaster⊠No payment, no fun, canât even kill anyone⊠Why did someone this boring summon meâŠâ
Resting my chin on my hand, I watched the demon muttering âIâm ruinedâ over and over again.
He really was breathtakingly handsomeâjust as a demon of temptation should be. Even the famously beautiful crown prince couldnât compare.
âSilver hair and red eyes⊠Ivria just has plain reddish-brown hair and green eyes.â
His beauty was unreal, almost otherworldly.
âEven when heâs sulking, he looks like a painting. How unfair.â
I sighed as I stared at the demon who looked too perfect for his own good.
âFine. So youâre saying I have to take responsibility for you, right? I did summon you, after all. Iâll take responsibility.â
âResponsibilityâŠâ
He looked at me, his face full of skepticism.
âAnd how are you planning to do that?â
âFeed you and give you a place to sleep, I guess?â
After all, I was a dukeâs daughter. Money wasnât an issue. Whatever my inheritance turned out to be, itâd surely be plenty.
âFeeding one person shouldnât be that hard.â
But then I rememberedâhe wasnât human. Maybe he needed⊠other kinds of nourishment.
âLike a vampire who drinks blood?â
That might explain all his talk about blood earlier.
With a cautious look, I asked, âDemons eat normal food, right? Youâre not going to make me fetch weird stuff like blood or hearts, are you?â
He frowned, looking deeply offended.
âWhat do you take us for? We eat bread and meat like civilized beings!â
âThen thereâs no problem.â
âNo problem? Eating and sleeping isnât a life! What about pleasure? Demons live for pleasure!â
He practically shouted, indignant. I couldnât help but laugh. Clearly, this demon had no idea what âboringâ really meant.
âWow, youâre spoiled. Want me to make your life really boring?â
âHah! And how would you do that?â
âYou said you have to grant all my wishes, right? What if I wish that you never eat, never sleep, and just stand facing the wall all day? Wouldnât that be boring?â
His face drained of color instantly.
âAh, thatâs the same face he made when I asked him to light the fireplace.â
Looking at his defeated expression, I knew Iâd won.
âSo, feeding and housing you is enough. You can find your own fun.â
He pouted but nodded reluctantly. He didnât like it, but he had no choice.
Now that that was settled, the next issue was how to explain him to others. His appearance was far too striking to pass off casually.
âIâll have to come up with somethingâŠâ
Just then, the demon poked my arm.
âHey, human.â
âYes?â
âYou really donât plan to start a war or anything?â
âNope.â
ââŠRight.â
His shoulders drooped in disappointment.
Even though he had no ears, he somehow looked like a large, dejected dog with its ears drooping. I couldnât help myselfâI reached out and patted his silver hair.
He froze, then looked up at me, utterly confused.
âWhat was that hand thing?â
âUh⊠comfort?â
âFelt more like you were petting a dog.â
Apparently, demons were very good at reading peopleâs minds. I averted my gaze and changed the subject.
âSo what should I call you? I canât keep saying âMr. Demon,â and I probably shouldnât use your real name, right?â
It was just an attempt to shift topics, but it was actually a valid question.
âI canât just go around calling him âDemonâ in front of people.â
I didnât need the extra gossip about âthe noble who summoned a demon.â
âDo you have a name you prefer? Iâll use that.â
âDoesnât matterâitâll be fake anyway. Call me whatever you want.â
âSo itâs fine if I call you Dumbass, then? Mr. Dumbass?â
âHey! No way!â
He shoved my hand away, indignant.
âIâm smart! Not dumb!â
âThen tell me what I should call you. Otherwise, Dumbass it is.â
âUnbelievable. How did I end up with you of all peopleâŠâ
He grumbled, ruffling his hair again.
âAh, here we go againâthe regret phase.â
Since he seemed to emit heat like the fire he controlled, I just sat quietly until he calmed down. Eventually, his muttering faded, and after a moment of silence, his low voice reached my ears.
âHarry.â
âHarry?â
âWhen someone calls me, thatâs the name I usually go by. My true name isnât even used among family.â
âAh, that makes sense. Your true names are for contracts. So your previous contractors called you Harry too?â
âYouâre my second contractor. The first one was some idiot who wanted to be king. He didnât care what he called meâhe only cared about my power.â
âSo that means Iâm the first human to call you Harry?â
âYouââ
His eyes widened, and then his cheeks flushed red. He quickly covered his face with his hands.
âD-donât make it sound weird!â
âWhen did I make it weird?â
âYou did! Just now!â
âI just stated a fact.â
âGeez, how can you say embarrassing stuff like that so calmly?â
âThat was embarrassing?â
âOf course it was! Wow, youâre scarier than I thought.â
As Harry started fuming again, I sighed deeply.
âAll I wanted was to light a fire in my fireplaceâŠâ
But somehow, Iâd ended up summoning the most troublesome demon imaginable.
